Would you be fine with a World Cup Instead?

it wouldnt mean as much a world cup, you wouldnt be helping your country in the medal count

I'd rather do it ever 2 years after the Olympics. Send them to both games.

I'm not sure. I thought the World Cup was kind of dull in 2004, but maybe that's just because the Olympics were only 2 years off both ways.

I really don't like the fact that it's in the offseason, when the players are in their worst playing shape. It also completely lacks any prestige that the Olympics brings the tournament, which I can't imagine would be great for viewership.

No, only NA want this. This is only a tournament to favour NA and NHL.

This is so true. This tournament doesn´t even feel in the heart for europeans because its a made up league by NHL to go around everything that has with IIHF and other power actors involved.
World Cup / Canada Cup is by NHL for NHL, with their rules, refs and home ice.
Everything about it stinks and is unfair. I wouldn´t even watch it and I have watched all of Russias national team games since 2003 (included 04 WC and all the 12 Euro Hockey Tour games each season).

If the Olympics didn't interrupt the NHL season they I'd vote Olympics. Basketball season in North America is in the winter but they play in the summer Olympics, perhaps hockey could be moved to the summer Olympics?:sarcasm:

Any tournament that doesn't interrupt the regular season is better than any tournament that does.

A 3 week interruption every 4 years is a small price to pay.

I absolutely love it this way.

I enjoy the compressed schedule in a O year. Loving the 5/6/7 games every two weeks.

So many people here not yet born in 1987, I bet. Or maybe just very young.

'87 - Best. Hockey. Ever.

These Olympics were like watching paint dry by comparison.

Funny to hear all the European posters say how unfair the World Cup is yet they love the World Championship, which is 100 x less fair to NHL players, but whatever.

No. Not the same thing at all. The 1996 and 2004 World Cups were forgettable events, other than to North American fans. 2004 especially was dull and pointless. It's not the same when the NHL organizes it, games scattered all over the place. Hockey should always remain part of the Olympics, with the best players playing. It adds the cherry to the Olympics and the players get to be part of a special atmosphere.

I disagree.

This 2014 tournament was the most boring I've ever seen in my life and I started watching hockey in 1979.

The World Cups/Canada Cups were much more exciting.

You do realize the WC of soccer is in their off season right? Do you think those guys show up there fat and out of shape?

Yeah but these guys have friendlies and the season ends in May and they are back within a month. Where hockey ends in June and these guys are off for 2 months before it starts up. Its not like they are training and playing friendlies all summer long.

You are kiddy with all this unfair crying ain't ya?

The other "world cup" has been played in North America how many times?

The tittle is world cup,no? Not euro/Scandinavian ect ect.

We need a best on best that's away from that large ice. A world cup ever four years seems right. Ideally it would replace all star games for that season. Maybe have a week of team building / training following xmas break and games start when world junior tourney ends.

Id prefer they continue with NHLers in the the Olympics, because its more of a world event. But its better than nothing!

September would mean poorly played games more often than not. Pre-season hockey on an international stage is not as good as what we have now. Now having a world cup every four years in Feb. makes sense. We could start in 2016 and go every four years. 2018 could be U-23

If soccer player can prepare in 4 week long training camps for the world cup, why can't hockey players?

Again, were you around in 1987?

to be fair, its a very vocalized problem in soccer leagues. the difference is FIFA controls the leagues which gives them no other options

Olympics ainec.

Nothing in international sports compares to an Olympic gold medal. It is iconic.

When you are 80 years old would you rather tell your grandkids about the time you won an Olympic Medal or how you won the world cup? Without hockey the closest thing the Winter Olympics have to a premier event is the massively corrupt figure skating. Even though this tournament sucked, you can't argue with how great the 2010 Olympics were.

World Cup! I'm all for it. I hate the Olympics interrupting the season.

But 1984 and 1987 were two of the best tournaments in the history of hockey.

I think the shine is off, but it would still be a lot of fun to watch.

So were 81 and 76. :)

Geopolitics is beyond NHL's control, but played a huge part of setting the stage for those events. The Cold War added interest and meaning.

The Brazilian national soccer team has never won a gold medal and I don't think those guys are losing sleep.

Oh, this North American August/September pre-season practice tournament? Maybe not.

Honestly, its about time the IIHF started to think more like the NHL. I understand you guys like your hockey but its not growing in the rest of Europe, the brand of the sport is not appealing to the right type of fan. It seems Euro hockey is trying to target Soccer fans rather than the rugby and combat sports fans that might enjoy the NHL brand more.

Either way, hockey will not grow globally until the rules are unified and our leagues can begin to play Champions League type tournaments.

Just nope!:shakehead

A lot of you north american people just don't understand what the olympics means to the players. It's for almost every european player the biggest event. Higher than the Stanley Cup!

And also almost every north american player would like to be part of the olympics. Share some things with other athlets.

You can't take that away and replace it with a world cup / canada cup. :shakehead
