Would it really be the end of the world if Matthews isn’t on the team in two years?

Have you heard of John Tavares? Talk to Islander fans who will tell you what he did.

Oh yeah and let's not forget Johnny Hockey.

In both cases their teams decided not to pursue trades because they kept trying to re-sign them up until the last minute of free agency. I don't recall either guy blocking trades.

So that's a different situation from what the Leafs would face.

What has been made abundantly clear in the last 7 years and last two coaches is that this core does not have it. Make whatever changes are necessary.

Unfortunately, Dubas has more or less publicly bet his job on the existing core and is therefore unlikely to trade anyone to make the necessary improvements.

Its pretty miserable being a Leafs fan today, but I have a special remedy for that: I just stop watching. It works every time :)

When I do start watching again, with all the other fair-weather fans like me, I hope they still have Auston Matthews because he might be the best player ever to play for theToronto Maple Leafs. Hart Trophy winner. Two-time goal-scoring leader. The Leafs have never had that before, and I don't know if and when they would ever have a player like that again.

In the meantime, since I don't own or work for the Leafs, I have no regrets over doing other more enjoyable things until they're fun to watch again. Whenever that might be. Nobody pays me or even thanks me to watch them when they're not much fun, so why bother?

There are better things to do.

He was great last night, but thats typical Nylander. He got demoted , plays great and watch him disappear again very soon. Next game, who knows which Nylander shows up. I would rather have Zac Hyman's compete level and dman Lybushkin's grit as missing pieces, over Nylander. I wonder what a GM would give up for Nylander, one of the most frustrating players in the NHL, plays to 70-80% of his potential and has a take it or leave attitude. My frustration for Nylander is based on me seeing a potential 120 point player if he competed hard.
Yep I see it too .. hard to accept when he has all da tools in da world at his disposal .. he literally should lead league in scoring every year he has da complete package .. but he doesn't .. he can skate speed wise with Rielly, he can shoot with Matty (close LOL) and he can dance edges with Mitch (close LOL) .. all he needs is confidence/courage whatever to make it happen more consistently .. keep in mind playing with an anchor hurts him too

Isles told Tavares they wanted to move him at the TDL and he asked them not to. This is pretty much common knowledge, and it is why Isles fans hate him Johnny Hockey was clearly never resigning in Calgary and should have been moved. No idea if Flames tried. I mean he signed for less money to play for a bottom dweller.

Sign and Trade like Calgary did with Tkachuk

Yes this is very different then him walking.

All things are possible. He more than likely still will sign. The team will more than likely straighten out and make it to the playoffs.

He loves the city. The team. Understand the importance of the market and setting records here. Smart money says he signs.

IF he wants to go. They have to get something for him. He would want a Hispanic market (according to CJ), real competitor and a big market. We don’t know how important being west is for him.

LA.
NYR
Dallas
Anaheim.
Maybe vegas???? If they could afford him.

My trades. Byfield. Clarke. 1 and salary (Arvidsson?)
NYR. Laff. Miller/Schneider 1 and probably goodrow
Dallas. I would want Wyatt Johnston/Harley 1 but probably would be like hintz or even roberston

Hard to say. I'd go as high as 13.5x8. Makes him the highest paid player until McDavid signs his next deal.

13.4 x 8 seems to be the sweet spot if he really likes his number.

He can ask for whatever though really

Agreed but we gave him everything he wanted in his last deal. Time for Matty to show he values winning over a few more dollars. I mean he's got lots of opportunities to make more money in this market. Hell I'll start a gofundme to make up the difference. ;)

Well, considering he's pretty much the only reason I watch Leafs games these days, I'd have to say yes. I love watching those exceptional guys.

Vegas and LA are the most likely destinations followed by NYR and Boston if wants to live in that region.

Chic, Det and Toronto are long shots, IMO.

I enjoy winning a playoff series. Hell I have forgotten what that feels like.
I understand you. Personally, I don't care win or lose. I'm in it to watch the games themselves. Not having past the 1st round in years doesn't bother me, as I tend to move into summer sports at that time of the year anyways. ;-)

My recollection is that Tavares informed management he was open to staying more so than " I'll block all trade attempts".

He also only had a minor-NTC during his last year in New York. They could have traded him if they wanted to.

Outsider here, but just wanted to say that re-signing Matthews at 14 or even 15 will be a lot simpler because the cap is going to be rising soon. Having an expensive deal like that when the cap is 90 mil is fine.

Remember when I said years ago that AM would leave as soon as his contract was up, or sooner if the right opportunity arose. I was viciously attacked like, uh uh oh ya, I was viciously attacked when they made Dubas the GM and I said he was a stiff. Nice to see so many posters have the memory of a toad. Few of us, very few of us saw what was coming down the pike when MLSE started making all those boneheaded moves 5 years ago. Wait! There are so many more to come. I am the Nostradomus of Maple Leaf hockey and when I tell you what disasters lie ahead you will come at me with torches and pitchforks.

One win and so many of you will be booking your place on Yonge street for the Stanley Cup parade. Wish you all the luck in the world.

Don't believe he said he would block trades, he just asked not to be traded at the TDL. Isles accomodated and Tavares walked July 1st.

So far, Leaf games have left me wanting. Bruins, Dallas, Edmonton, Calgary, Rangers games have been more exciting. Once Matty gets it going it will be better but I am not expecting much from our bottom 6.

Well, if the Leafs is still first round exits in the playoffs by the time AM’s deal is done. Does it matters if he leaves or not? First round exits and missing the playoffs is pretty much 4-7 more games.

It would scare the crap out of Oilers fans if McD don’t resign knowing Leafs got enough cap space to sign a max deal to bring the Chosen One home if AM leaves.

I’ll preface this by saying it’s probably too early to have this conversation. However, with the abysmal start to the season and with what seems like will be the 7th straight year winning nothing of substance, I figure the question has to be asked.

Every leaf fan I’ve heard from thinks it will be the end of the world if Matthews isn’t playing here in two seasons. Matthews is a world class player. No denying that. But is it worth it for the Leafs to pay 13+ mil/yr to a guy who hasn’t proved he can elevate his game in the playoffs? Is it even possible for a team to win the cup in the modern NHL with a player taking up such a high percentage of the cap?

If the answer to these questions is no, or if the Leafs get the slightest inkling that Matthews won’t re-sign, then they have to explore moving him this off-season to at least get somewhat of a haul back for him.

Personally, I am ready to nuke the entire organization at this point. Move on from most (if not all) of the core, front office and coaching staff and start over.
I appreciate you having the stones to make this thread. Good post. If he wants/gets 15M a year I hope it's not here and the Leafs move him for assets before he can leave for free. Hard to imagine we'd win less playoff rounds with him not here.

As with anything, depends what you get for him.

The real question is do you trust this management group to get a solid return if they needed to move off him.

And the answer to that is obviously no.
