If you think the Habs and Wings have a worse future outlook than the Pens now, then I have serious questions on if you even watch hockey.

In 2017 the Habs and Wings had predictably ugly futures. The Pens won the Cup. The Habs and Wings still have predictably poor futures. The Pens now have a predictably poor future. The It took seven years but the Pens joined the Habs and Wings in the predictably poor future group.

I mean he said “goalie who will keep them from rebuilding”. I think the impression was that Price was so good that they’d never bottom out and get a franchise player in the draft. The complaint was that Price was too good to allow them to fail so bad to rebuild. It’s a complaint a lot of Devils fans had about Schneider - the team in front of him was worst in league bad but they never finished worst in league during his time because he prevented them from failing that hard.

And it was kinda true. When Price was healthy he kept them competitive enough to not be able to bottom out and get a super high draft pick.

Even the Minny take is solid- very different team without Kaprizov.

You mean if you remove a Top 10 player in the world team will be worse? Thats not what I would call a solid take, especially given there is nothing to suggest he will leave….in 18 months.

Minnesota belongs more in the long term contender status. Boldy & Faber are approaching superstar status themselves and they still have a couple more bullets in the chamber with Yurov & Buium. Not to mention JEE, Rossi, Wallstedt and the depth in the prospect pool.

There are at least twenty teams with less ingredients for a longterm contender. Try again

Seattle & Chicago also are sneaky candidates. Chicago has so many holes to fill still, could see that being a perpetual rebuild situation

I think with the full bottoming and unloading during 2022-23 it’s destined to be a while. Certainly if prospects bust it could take some time. The hope that with three first rounders in 2022, two in 2023, three in 2024, two in 2025 plus the other picks you have a pool of players that can start to take shape and then you supplement it with the clean cap as needed. I think a good chance the playoff drought gets pretty long since they were spending a few years thinking they could compete and then had to strip the team for parts and only then could they build up, the 2022 draft picks are still just 20 years old so it’ll take a couple more years to really know what you have there, and the other obviously behind that (including a likely very high 2025 draft pick not taken yet). It could certainly be a “forever” rebuild if picks aren’t hitting at the rate and level you need and you’re rebuilding the rebuild in a couple seasons. That’s certainly the ‘risk’ of tearing it down as opposed to just keeping what you got, trying to re-sign players and hoping for the best… but it’s probably a bit early to make sweeping declarations one way or another.

I was responding to a take from 2017 saying Minny didn’t look great and didn’t have a star- I’m saying Karizov totally changes that, so that poster being wrong about Minny makes sense. Work on reading comprehension and not projecting your insecurities about your team so much, ya?

They aren’t even in the same stratosphere as “predictably bad out comes” today

The Pens won two Cups when this thread first started though. The Habs and Wings were rebuilding back then and still are now. And neither GM has been able to either draft or acquire the elite guys who lead clubs to winning.


Not too sure how anyone found this old of a thread, but it is kind of cool how it’s still relevant.

The Habs have a great future outlook. They are just a bad team. No different than any rebuilding team.

I think of teams in the mediocre middle like Pittsburgh and Detroit and Isles for this.

It sure did change fast, their top elite talent hadn’t popped yet and then very much did the next season.
