Worst NHL Debuts for a goalie?

That was an emergency call up, wasn't it? He's no David Ayres but he shouldn't have even been in the NHL that night. Was it vs STL? I almost managed to suppress that memory lol.

He went in to relieve Joey MacDonald after the Wings went down 5-2 early in the 2nd period, and not due to an injury or anything. With McCollum in net, the score went to 8-3 for the Blues at the end 2nd, which prompted Babcock to put MacDonald back in to start the 3rd.

He may have been recalled under emergency, but it wasn't some last minute David Ayers deal. McCollum had been recalled after Howard went down in a game 4 nights earlier, and he had already dressed to back up MacDonald the previous game.

But yea, I'm sure the Wings had no intentions for him to do anything more than just sit on the bench for what what was a short term injury to Howard. That was Osgood's last year where he was done in mid January, which prompted the Wings to sign Nabokov for the Islanders. IIRC, they recalled McCollum because he had been crap in GR and they didn't want to cost GR games by calling up Jordan Pearce, who had been carrying the mail after MacDonald got called up.

I thought the thread was bumped specifically for Sorokin. He had a difficult position, he wasn't preparing to play today. Plus his team left him out to dry.

accurate. In a perfect world hed be able to adjust While starting in the AHL. Islanders definitely left him out to dry but 3 of the goals were really bad. His positioning was off, he couldn’t hold anything in his catcher, and he looked stiff. He’s been a pro for a long time now but maybe it was just overwhelming finding out 15 minutes before puck drop you’re making your nhl debut? Either way, I expect him to be better and the isles to be better.

Eh, Shesterkin had a shit game in game 1 and he's played in the NHL before.

Samsonov, Shesterkin and Sorokin all let in 4+ goals in their season debuts. They'll all bounce back, but not a great start after the ungodly hype they've been getting.

Signing up as "Rangers Fan" just to post this, LOL

Haha yea, a very creative name from a ranger fan who makes a new account on a Saturday night to talk sh!t about the islanders to make himself feel better.

Sorokin obviously didn’t look good but the guy had no idea or intentions of playing until 15 minutes before the game starts. You would think a guy who’s never played in game in the United States would need to mentally prepare for their first NHL game but I guess not in this guys eyes.

I do though think most ranger / hockey fans think this guys a clown and understand it’s probably not the best way to decide if Sorokin is “overrated” or not.

Nah it was bumped for Husso, who came in relief for binnington and his team also left him out to dry

Had a horrible NHL debut.

6 of his 7 goals against were clearly savable / easy goals

Only way for him is upwards and improve. Good luck!.
He looked gassed from the get-go. Ill or most nervous ever?

Early days, but the Oilers passed on Wallstedt cause they didn’t like something about his mental game or character.

Keep in mind, Yzerman also chose Cossa over Wallstedt. Oilers were high on Cossa as well and would likely have drafted him if available. When Cossa was drafted the Oilers made the move to trade down as they weren’t sold on Wallstedt.

Will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. I’m still of the opinion that the Oilers missed on Wallstedt (based on his name only, dude has WALL in his name ffs) but only time will tell.

That was a classic case of welcome to the NHL kid. He was over relying on his positioning and Dallas was finding holes he probably didn’t know he had. Looked like the speed of the shots caught him off guard as well. I think he’ll be alright.

Not for nothing but I don't think most people care much for how the Oilers feel on goalies

Starting Wallstedt against the Stars was an odd choice, basically threw him to the wolves against one of the top offenses in the league. He'll be fine.

Considering Skinner has righted the ship, your first sentence makes no sense.
