Worse NHL olympics ever?

It has nothing to do with the size of the rink.

The competition was the weakest ever, since the NHL players began to play in the Olympics in 1998.
Also, the competition format was awful.

Slovakia looks done, Hossa and Chara the last great generation, only "very good" players on the horizon in Sekera, Tatar, Jurco, Marincin... And only a few of them.

The Czechs' best player is a 42-year old Jagr and their defense is atrocious.
Goaltending weak and again, no great player on the horizon. Not a one.
A few "very good" ones, mind you.

Finland and Sweden ended up so banged up it got silly in the end.
Props to Finland for playing really solid hockey, if not for the Rask flue, who knows how everything ends up.

USA looked strong, and their program is strong, they continue to grow.
Their time will come.
To me, they looks like they got that "little brother" complex going vs Canada, but the talent is definitely there.

Russia has a strong top-6, decent goaltending... And that's it.
Awful D. Bottom-6 just not good enough.
Oh, and a terrible coach.

Switzerland is coming up strong, but they still need some time to grow.
...

Compare that to any other Olympic tournament so far, and it was really between Canada and the US.
The only team I can see beating them with these Olympic lineups was Finland with Rask in goal.

Not to take anything from the Canadians - they deserved the gold, but I came away most impressed with Finland.

Rask and mostly Finnish leagues and KHLers combined with not even their top NHL players did great, noone outplayed them heavily and they were in every game.
Considering how many fantastic young players they got coming up (reigning WJC champs), Finland definitely looks very strong for the next few Olympic cycles.

that sums it up well. it was the weakest competition ever. well since pre-1998 anyway. most of the better teams just didn't look all that good. some countries had major injuries that hurt them, and others just had teams where their best players were all far past their prime. overall, Olympic mens hockey was very boring this year. nowhere near as exciting as it was in years past.

Two things stood out for me that were not all that great. The first was the poor ice conditions throughout the tourney. You would think a country that prides it's self as being a hockey nation would have had a better handle on ice preparation and maintenance. The second were the crowds. I can't remember the last time the arena's seemed so lifeless. Even the USA vs Canada Semifinal which was arguably the fastest and most entertaining of all the games had little to no life at times. I think once the Russians were eliminated the majority of the Russian people didn't give a crap.

If you're a fan of the game and not just Canada, it can probably get a bit tedious to watch Canada systematically dismantle teams. They were almost too perfect.

its not the quality that turned me off its rather the ridiculous non watchable feeds that i hate... live streams where ok i guess but thats about it... if u didnt watch it live u can forget finding that event elsewhere on the internet and thats in 2014 LOL. they force u to watch it on some daily highlight show on ur local cable provider that has ****** commentators most of the time.

i want hockey now and maybe i want to rewatch it over and over why is that so hard to manage in 2014...the same goes for the summer games.

i dont understand who profits by blocking fans from watching the games

Even as a Canadian fan this was BORING. The prem was fun and the quarters but then Russia got eliminated and Canada just snoozed everyone to bed shutting everyone out to win gold. I would way rather see 2 of Canada/Russia/USA in the finals over an injured Scandinavian team

Yes. The hockey was so uninspiring it was difficult to get emotionally invested in the games.

I ended up switching to some other sport most of the time.

I think this tournament showed how small of a sport hockey is globally.

It was boring as a Canadian too. I wanted close, exciting games more than I wanted Canada to win. I respect and enjoy watching strong systematic play, but it gets trumped by high scoring fast paced hockey in my opinion. The US/Canada Semi wasn't bad, at least it was tight. You can probably count on one hand the big saves Price had to make the whole tournament, and he never had to be spectacular.

The Russia - USA game was probably the most exciting game. Both the medal games were boring as hell. It was pretty sweet to see Russia get eliminated on home ice as well.

Suck it Ovechkin.

On the topic of boring hockey: I'm a Rangers fan and 2011 (finished 1st in East) was one of the most boring years of hockey I've watched. Really, all of the Torts years were sometimes excruciating to sit through an entire game, and that doesn't make me any less of a fan of hockey or the Rangers.

Sometimes hockey can be boring and it doesn't take away anything from your hockey fandom, as some posters have implied.

I don't post here often...and threads like these is the reason why.

Total domination by one team can make for less exciting hockey. Too bad, so sad for those who expected end to end hockey.....and someone else not named Canada winning gold.

I have a hard time getting behind 3 goal games when that is the norm. Just do not like the direction coaching and officiating is taking hockey these days.

I don't need to see return of the 80's to be entertained, but I would love to see scoring and offensive skill return to the game. These Olympics were basically the opposite of what I want from the game, and I believe this represents the attitudes of the casual or potential new fan, which our sport desperately needs more of.

I thought Russia vs USA was a better game. The US got so ****ing dominated by Canada. :biglaugh:

No, just average.

It was great to watch Canada play dominant hockey.
It was very disappointing that Russia didn't show up.
It would have been more interesting if Sweden had all their players.
It's sad to see the Czechs these days.

So only one of the only four teams to have a serious chance at winning played great.
Really great. Loved it.

I don't understand the dominance comments. They struggled against some weak teams in the prelims and won by a goal against the yanks. They killed Sweden, I'll give them that.

I thought they sucked.

Just think tho that Canada game was close if you guys had ended up winning I'm betting USA would have beat Sweden easily for gold then the games become best ever

After Russia went out this became the easiest path to gold in recent memory

Canada US was the true gold medal game

It was boring before Canada dominated the US and Sweden so the arrogant "It's boring when we dominate so hard" excuse holds no water.

Can't wait for the NHL to start again as even my boring Kings are more exciting than nearly every game in this tournament. Sounded like nobody was in the stands; I seem to recall a body check being thrown but I can't confirm this to be true.

I think you will have Canadian fans saying it was great because they won and then some of the European nations liking it because, well, it was European style hockey out there. For me, it just further solidified my belief that the World Cup needs to come back and that the best players in the world playing on the same size ice and with the same rules of the best league in the world is a much more exciting format.
Of course it was. Second rate teams playing pond hockey and running around the ice can make for exciting hockey. Reminds me of even matched midget teams.
Yeah, you should probably stop posting here again. :shakehead

Unfortunately I missed USA/Russia, what many people thought was the most entertaining game of the tourney. You know it was a bad tournament when the Women's Gold Medal match up ended up being my favorite :shakehead

Gold in Hockey Men's AND Women's Hockey two games in a row

That probably won't ever be done again..... Ever

Just looking at scores?

Even the close games were not that close. Canada had issues finishing, but creating chances was never a problem..
