Odd post since none of them played in the listed tournament despite being eligible and healthy. But anyway find a time machine and take it up with Macman before he created the title roughly 19 years ago.
I see someone who no shows as someone who just flat out refused to go. Not because they were playing in every kids end goal…the NHL, or injured. But to each their own.

I've updated the thread for 2025. This year is very straightforward but if there are any issues with this year or any other year then let me know. With only 4 players missing this year due to professional commitments this year will be top five in terms of fewest players missing since 1982 (only 1995, 2005, 2006, and 2013 had fewer than four players missing and 2023 had only four missing).

2022 Redux

Note: Due to the unique nature of this edition of the tournament, I'm going to include any player who opted out after having participated in the December tournament, provided that player seems reasonably healthy.

Canada: Jamie Drysdale, Quinton Byfield, Seth Jarvis, Cole Sillinger, Owen Power, Kaiden Guhle, Cole Perfetti, Jake Neighbours, Justin Sourdif, Xavier Bourgault, Mavrik Bourque, Dylan Guenther, Shane Wright
Many people won’t think this but I think this is Canada’s most impressive gold medal; they beat a full strength Finland (who had even added Raty since the winter) with a B team

Last year was probably one of the worst with many players missing and from many different nations. Korchinski,Bedard,Wright,Benson,Nemec,Slafkovsky,Carlsson,Kemell,Bichsel of the top of my head

I still think winning in 93 against that powerhouse team led by Forsberg and Naslund was their most impressive win.

Regarding Zubrus should perhaps be noted that he was never really eligible to represent any other team but Lithuania given that in principle he only had Lithuanian citizenship. Not sure who issued his last Soviet passport though, but new nationality laws and IIHF regulations would have prevented him from freely choosing his team de facto and de jure.

I looked into Zubrus however many years ago and found conflicting information. You are probably right but what I'd really like to see is the IIHF eligibility requirements around the time the Soviet Union collapsed. I may end up editing Zubrus.

Czechs didn't get Badinka.. won't count for the list but that is definitely some kind of bitching match.

On one that may join the list is Eduard Sale... Seattle may not release him. That is not official though.. just rumors.

What is the Badinka issue? As for Sale thanks, I will watch to see what happens there.

Czech squabble of some sort between him and Czech federation. My guess is him and the coach don't see eye to eye. He is a talented player that left for Sweden, got drafted high and seemingly doesn't want to play for us or we don't want him playing for us.

Shitty and strange situation. Doesn't meet your criteria though.

We lost Badinka to a squabble.
We lost Jiricek to an injury.
They were both easily Top 4 for us.lol

If we lose Sale I will lose my mind but that is the rumor. It's a nice problem to have and new to Czechs. Our players usually aren't sniffing the NHL as teenagers.lol

I see, yeah that Badinka situation is unfortunate but not what this is for. Sort of like Lemieux in 1984 when he skipped the tournament to chase the QMJHL scoring record.

I agree that these things are a good problem to have. When development is working well a country will likely have a lot of players missing from this tournament. In the Czech case you can see how a lot of key players in the 1998 Olympic victory missed tournaments in the early 1990s, whereas the Czech teams that won the tournament back to back yielded a lot less talent that was useful at the best on best level. There are exceptions obviously, and Russia has presented a unique case where they get a disproportionately high number of their best even at age 19 because they often stay in Russia. I believe you can get a decent idea at how well a country is doing developing players by looking at who they have in the NHL at 18/19, or at least it is useful information. Especially comparing different eras for the same country.

Couldn't agree more. I always joke Czechs might win because our top guys are not good enough for the NHL and we will have our full squad.lol

When you realize Canada could have Bedard and Cellibrini.. you can't help but think their development is doing very well!

We are almost on the brink of nuclear war. We should lose our minds for such a reason and not because of the absence of a few players and among them an insulted player who does not want to play for the national team. Take it easy.

Allegedly he was operating with a Soviet passport until quite late, but to legally register for Russian citizenship he would have had to reside in Russia which he never did until 2004. Ukraine on the other hand did not extend their citizenship to those immigrant residents who already had another citizenship and Lithuania had already restored theirs a few years earlier.

I see, that all sounds plausible. I'm going to dig deeper into Zubrus, maybe some contemporary stuff just detailing with post-Soviet players.

And we’ve been closer at other times in history. We should probably park the rhetoric and commentary unless we want to derail things in a hockey discussion.
