GDT: World Junior Discussion

Well, pretty much par for the course for an early tournament game the past few years: sloppy pond hockey, stuff that will get us burned badly against the Russians or Americans. But at least there's enough offensive talent this time that the high-risk plays will work more often.
 
Watching Murphy play makes me so grumpy, he's terrible out there. I'd be shocked if his game translated well to the NHL, screams M.A. Bergeron.

Just makes me sick that Frankie Corrado could be the factor that holds this team back from winning Gold. If we don't win, Spott better take a hell of a lot of heat! I am just almost visibly shaken right now.

So Yarullin makes a late hit with head contact in Rus-Svk game.

Anyone think he gets a 3 gamer? I doubt it.

Even though we won today I agree. This team is not a typical Canadain team. We're relatively undersized with almost zero grit. Our bottom pairing D is pretty awful and I'm not sold on Subban. It seems like we're going to try and "out skill" the Russians, Swedes etc.. But that's not really our game.



I still have hope and think we can win. But if I were betting real money I wouldn't bet on Canada this year.












Side note...

Corrado not only should have made the team he probably could be playing as the #3-#4 slot and it ain't even close
 
Rielly had a great first period and looked very comfortable as PPQB. For whatever reason he was benched in the second, and played poorly in his limited minutes in the 3rd. Spott is really confusing me with his ice-time distribution so far.

Spott seems to do be doing everything in his power to get Murphy going and its coming at the cost of Morgan Reilly. I thought Reilly looked great in the first period until he inexplicably got his icetime slashed. I don't mind this version of team Canada, but I do call into question, the coaching. If Spott isn't careful, he's going to end up playing mindgames with his players.
 
Rielly looked straight up dangerous in the Subway Series. He was pretty good in the 1st, but did trail off. I also, blame Spott. For whatever reason it seemed like Murphy got out there more.
 
Just so unfortunate that Murphy was given a mulligan. Corrado is a top 4 defenceman on this team.

Ouelette has a really weird playing style and Murphy is garbage. The former should have been left off because he never played a camp game.
 
Fell asleep, didnt even get past the 10 minute mark when it was 2-0. Just caught a few highlights this morning. That 2nd German goal was slick.
 
Anyone think Shalunov faces discipline for his nasty cross check to the face of a Slovakian?

For as much as people are unhappy with team Canada and how much they are talking up the ruskies....Canada was much more impressive today.

Russia's bottom 6 forwards are not great at their roles.

Nicushkin in particular was invisible throughout.

Everyone keeps saying this but they don't provide the context. He was matched up against Germany's top line who played extremely well. Draissadel in particular looked like a top talent for his age. The rest of our defense played against very weak competition, and looked much better as a result.

Draistl is an excellent player, but for as hyped as Hamilton is, every time I've ever seen him I've been underwhelmed.

He doesn't make he greatest decisions, doesn't use his size effectively and isn't very good in a shutdown role (hence why he didn't get asked to do it once last year).

He's not a guy who is very good at shutting down the opposition IMO.

Definitely more Coburn than Pietrangelo for me.

Few points.

1) Size is really dependent on the players the team has available to them. Just not a lot of big physical bruising type players.

2) Yes, Tom Wilson was cut, but this tournament is on the big ice so his style may not have fit in. Kind of like the Can. Olympic team in 2006 where there were so many power forward types. Just not the right fit. Opted for more skill and speed here. Probably makes sense.

3) Seems to be more pure PK guys rather than the traditional grit/energy guys Canada is used to having like the Carter Ashton/Marcus Foligno/etc. types in the bottom 6 (or pure skill in McKinnon)

4) Subban may have a great NHL career, but that doesn't mean he should be given the #1 spot just based on the Russia/Canada series. Chet Pickard was the 1st goalie drafted in 2008, but he wasn't the guy in net when Canada won gold in Ottawa. If Binnington is playing better, he should start.

5) Canada's D, does make you scratch your head about their selections.

Reilly, Hamilton, Harrington, Ouellet, all seem fine. Didn't notice Reinhart early and there's Wotherspoon. Murphy, goodness, if he doesn't contribute on the PP, it will likely come back to bite Canada in the rear end, like losing Hamonic did a couple of tournaments ago. Don't see him being able to take a regular shift and giving the team the required quality minutes at even strength. Whether it was Corrado, Dumba, or whomever that would have stayed over Murphy, it's going to be tough.

Canadian talent from the 2011 and 2012 drafts weren't as deep as prior years. Last year was the year of the Dmen.

I haven't been impressed by him either this tournament/tryout, but I just think it's important to provide the context when comparing him to our other D from today. He would have looked better if he got their assignments, and they would have looked better if he got theirs.

Personally I'd like to see Hamilton play with Reinhart and put Harrington-Ouellett back together for a shutdown pair. Let Rielly, Murphy and Wotherspoon play bottom pairing minutes in low pressure, offensive situations.

Spotts only benched him because he want to play his boy Murphy. This guy is so clear towards favoritism for his own player....
 
Ouelette is underwhelming. He's a good player, but to be gifted a Spott, because of the summer camp and not the selection camp is wrong.

Monahan should have made the team too if they based the selection on the summer camp games.

I will continue to question the 5 LH dmen and only 2 RH guys, especially since the two righties are almost pure offense (Hamilton is an average defender IMO).

Disagree. Ouellett was great, and Monahan was the most underwhelming underager at camp.

Monahan was the best forward this summer. That's the point I was making not on the selection camp.

Ouelette underwhelms for me. Good player, but I wouldn't say he looked great this morning.

Definitely not the type of player you reserve a Spott for without seeing him up to speed with everyone else.

Okay, I get the Monahan point.

Disagree on Ouellet however. I thought he was our best defenseman today. Him and Harrington were tied in my mind going into the 3rd, but Harrington made some boneheaded plays that dropped him down in my eyes.
 
A decent start for the tournament, but there are definitely some blemishes that will need to be worked out.

The top line was incredibly dynamic, but over reliance on it could be an issue. Fortunately, Jonathan Drouin was also making things happen every time he was on the ice. Best forward outside of the Big Three, IMO.

Subban wasn't awful, but he wasn't great either. I would call his performance passable, but he didn't stake a claim to the starter's job today. Wouldn't surprise me to see Spott rotate the goalies until one steps up.

The defence, IMO, was our biggest issue. I liked Hamilton's game, and I also felt Reinhart and Reilly had good outings. On the opposite end of the spectrum was Murphy. I realize that he is an offensive defense man, but even that was going poorly for him. Error after error that - against a better team - could have been quite costly.

The Germans showed a nice touch in capitalizing on their chances. Other big note of the game and perhaps the most promising thing for Canada was that our parade to the penalty box seemed a bit smaller. Hopefully that trend continues.
