GDT: World Junior Discussion

A decent start for the tournament, but there are definitely some blemishes that will need to be worked out.

The top line was incredibly dynamic, but over reliance on it could be an issue. Fortunately, Jonathan Drouin was also making things happen every time he was on the ice. Best forward outside of the Big Three, IMO.

Subban wasn't awful, but he wasn't great either. I would call his performance passable, but he didn't stake a claim to the starter's job today. Wouldn't surprise me to see Spott rotate the goalies until one steps up.

The defence, IMO, was our biggest issue. I liked Hamilton's game, and I also felt Reinhart and Reilly had good outings. On the opposite end of the spectrum was Murphy. I realize that he is an offensive defense man, but even that was going poorly for him. Error after error that - against a better team - could have been quite costly.

The Germans showed a nice touch in capitalizing on their chances. Other big note of the game and perhaps the most promising thing for Canada was that our parade to the penalty box seemed a bit smaller. Hopefully that trend continues.

Defense is a giant cluster #$%&, like it was made by someone who knew what parts you needed so just went out and grabbed them without waiting to get the amounts. Now they have no idea how to stick it together.

Reilly Murphy 3rd pairing is coming.

Corrado made it in our hearts

Subban confirmed as starter again against Slovakia, straight from Spott in TSN's article recapping today's game.

Would rather see him start Binnington to get some competition going for that starting job, but I guess he's trying to get some confidence going in Subban's game.

Hockey Writers put out a list yesterday with a bit more detail and stats too:

I think a legit question needs to be: How much better has Gillis really drafted in comparison to his predecessors?

He's been at the helm for 5 drafts and has had 1 NHL regular (Hodgson) and Sauve play the odd game. I dont think i'm missing anyone in terms of his drafting.

He's had a couple good FA prospect signings (notably Tanev).

Having no Canuck prospects at the World Jrs is actually pretty damn pathetic.

i don't think wjc appearances really mean too much as far as drafting quality goes but it is disappointing to have like 5 canucks prospects in as many years to watch and root for in the tournament when some teams have that many prospects playing in the wjc in one year

Detroit is apparently the best drafting team and have had 0 NHL regulars since the 2006 or 2007 draft. They might finally have Nyquist or Smith make it full time, but it's been a while. I don't think that's a good way to judge a prospect pool when you're the best team in the league. Nor is it smart to look at WJC considering how many of those players never even play in the NHL and how many players that don't make the WJC do.

Just a gentle reminder before this line of discussion progresses - we have plenty of threads to discuss drafting in general, as well as Gillis' record and his the records of his predecessors. Let's keep this thread about the World Juniors (not that either of you were going too far off topic, yet).

We should have had 1 player but Denmark isn't very good, so no Jensen.

...one last note on the subject, Gillis has made an effort to draft guys who are older by a year or two - that might be another reason for the absence of guys at the World Juniors.

I caught the tail end of the USA/Germany game. Holy crow, the US looks dangerous. Such good puck movement all around, and they have a few guys who can dangle like crazy.

^ though to judge that game...as one team clearly didn't show up (was it that or the other team making them look bad). Whatever the reason, Germany looked really bad in that game.

The US would have looked even better if Seth Jones hadn't been bobbling the puck all over the place. I haven't seen him play before, maybe it was just nerves, but it seemed like they would have been better served having someone else out there on the PP.

Galchenyuk is scary good.

True, the opponent makes a big difference, and it was a small sample size to be sure. I still feel the puck movement in general was very sharp for the US; it's an issue I've had with Canada to this point. In some instances, they have a few guys trying to do too much on their own, and in others, they seem to panic and move the puck prematurely.

Yup, as I expected. Coach Spott doesn't know how to call a player over to the end of the bench to calm their nerves and let them know that they don't have to do everything. Another strike. :shakehead

I believe this is a result of a fairly poor D unit for Canada. This has to be one of the weakest units in a long time. There is no Doughty, Subban, Ellis, Pietrangelo, etc.. #1 D on this team. We usually have at least 2 elite D men on our team.

So after watching what I have been able to of the WJC, I have come to this conclusion, if we don't do well, the blame should go squarely on the coach.

There is many things I don't get that should be easy. From not putting certain people together that you know have chemeistry, (like we did in the olympics), to not running with the hot hand in goal (it's a short tournament shouldn't even be a question), to selecting a bit pourly (on the big ice skating means so much more than size).

I am not a glass half empty guy, so I still think guys like the Nuge can carry us to victory, but I think losing will be all on coaching. I think we are in for a big awakening come the USA game.

Blaming the coach for losses that haven't even happened yet. Not sure I agree with that. I think it's best to watch the games first and then decide why you think we lost than to decide before the games even happen.

It's I don't like his decisions. I think we should have a different goalie, and some different line combos, and d pairs, and I also think we should have taken different people. All of that is on the coach. With all of that being different tough to put blame on the players, or even some in game changes.

Again I also still think we have the talent to win, just think things could look a lot better.

I also wanted to say it now, so its on recorded and people are not saying thats just hindsight.

At least nobody can call a Monday expert when you call it before the game.

Murray would've been a clear cut #1 guy, Harrington and Hamilton are the closest thing we got to a Doughty, Subban etc.

We're really gunna miss Murray on the back end.

And Canada down 1-0 4 minutes into the game, really sloppy play. Pretty sure Murphy turned over the puck.
