Speculation: Tavares landing spot?

Ha, guy just scored 38 goals. Y'all are like 2 year 5 million a year seems fair.

Its more that Tavares doesn't wanna leave, has made tens of millions in his career and is living out his dream so no reason for him to chase money.

IMO he'll stay with the Leafs on a massive discount.

As previously mentioned, probably the best comparison is Giroux who signed in Ottawa for 3 years at $6.5m per season.

Tavares also 34,,coming off a better season than Giroux was when he signed and the cap going up could probably do a little better. I would say on the open market could get 3 or 4 years at $8/8.5 per. A discount for Toronto is probably 3 x $7/7.5 per.

Giroux may be a good comparison for him to stay in Toronto. Home town discount.

Pavelski is a better open market comparison, though.

I can imagine Tavares going anywhere but the Leafs.....he is still very effective and they will make a deal to be sure.

Unless Tavares gives Toronto a hometown discount(Which is possible) He will be headed to free agency. Here is my take on teams that could be a landing spot for him.

Taveras is settled with him family in Mississauga and Muskoka in the summers so I am going to guess three places that make sense IF he wants to stay close to home and Toronto doesn't resign him.

Buffalo, Montreal and Ottawa. I don't think Buffalo will target Tavares but I do see it as a good fit if Tavares wants to stays close to home. The other spots are Ottawa and Montreal. Ottawa also fits that scenario. Montreal could also fit into that scenario but is a bit farther from home. Both Ottawa and Montreal could use a player like Tavares so there is a need there.

IF Taveras doesn't resign where does he go? People's thoughts?
I hope Montreal signs him. A 3 year deal. He's big left shot center, 38 goals. Play with Demidov

Historically speaking, you find a lot of players taking massive discounts to play in Toronto because it's their dream?

If I’m STL, a young exciting up and coming team that was 1.6 secs away from rd 2 with a short term need for a quality 2C. I’d offer Tavares a 1 or 2 year deal @ 9M per.

How did that signing bonus tax issue turn out? If he needed to fork over 6-7 million he is gone and will chase the dollars to make up for that.

If Canada let him keep it, then I suppose he could take a hometown discount and take less.

Tavares at 5-6 mill is awesome. He’s one of the best faceoff guys in the league. He’s still will score 30 plus goal.

He’s just slow af and can’t keep up in high pace games.

I bet he re-signs in Toronto at a reasonable cap hit. I doubt he wants to relocate his family this late in his career. Who else is going to fill that 2C spot for the Leafs?

In the cap era there haven't been many players of his calibre from Toronto that have signed with the Maple Leafs. Pre cap it gets hard to find out given there wasn't a giant database publicly available of player salaries and news about contracts only came via newspaper so it's hard to track down.

FWIW tho, the Oilers offered Clarkson 6 million/year and he went with the "lower" offer from Toronto at $5,250,000/year. Not saying he and Tavares are comparable at all, but it's a small example of a player from the Toronto area taking less to play there.

Pretty sure he only wants to win it in Toronto and as such, will take whatever he is offered. We will see. I think he is satisfied where he is. I don’t see him willing to make any big moves even if it is for a better chance at a cup (Although I think Toronto is closer than others do, perhaps).
Fair enough. Toronto could pull it all together at some point before Tavares retires. If he wants more money, he will definitely get it elsewhere

He apparently asked for 9M and the Leafs offered 5M. We'll see if they can bridge that gap.

I can see a few Teams offering up to 33 million for 3 years . He is still very effective . Question is how bad does he wanna stay in T O ?

Does he wants to win ? if yes staying in Toronto isn't an option. To me Vegas Los Angeles are 2 good option for him and my darkhorse is Colorado

I think he takes 4M for 5 years in Toronto. Sign him until he is 40 on the condition he is going to accept a new role. Either 3rd line C or if that doesn't work he will be playing wing.

Leafs need to do something different up the middle of the ice. Tavares would be coming back to be a role player not a main piece.
