Don't wanna stir trouble here but I couldn't resist...from all the Toronto type bashing for not selling out the QF game last time, here's this

Canada got a boost from the sellout crowd of 19,273, the loudest yet at the often quiet Air Canada Centre that fed off an enthusiastic rendition of O Canada by Paulina Gretzky, team executive director Wayne Gretzky's teenage daughter.

I think the ACC was pretty loud tonight!! Maybe it was because it was a Saturday night game? :dunno: Or just the fact is was a semi-final hmm but the final shall be just as loud or louder I hope. I also hope Brodeur is better for Tuesday, I wasn't so confident in Luongo but he still did the job.

... Lecavalier took a stupid penalty that allowed a penalty and almost cost Canada the game. The penalty will be lost on the score sheet and the goal will be permanent WCH04 highlight reel material but regardless Lecavalier has shown me again that he is a reckless, undisciplined player that cares nothing for team play.

That call was one of the weakest I've seen in this tournament. Even the announcers said so. A total make-up call. Lecavalier is far from reckless and undisciplined -- that was the Vinny of 3 years ago. You might try updating your scouting report.

Toronto crowds were excited because they had never seen forwards supply defensive zone coverage before and they were trying to figure out why forwards were helping out the defense.

You are correct, sir.

Yup, good job by Toronto. Seemed deafening on TV when the game-winning goal was scored.

I find it hilarious that the article insinuates Paulina Gretzky had something to do with the atmosphere :)

ESPN cut to the meaningless football game in cultured Tuscaloosa, Alabama BEFORE the overtime began.

That is unbelievable. And sad.

If anyone actually believes that this great sport will ever be embraced by a mass market in the US, that is all you need to know. If it was of any significant appeal, even the nimrods at ESPN (Boo-ya this, Stuart Scott) wouldn't be in such a rush to switch programming.

Sorry for those who missed it.

Being an NHL fan in the States is like falling in love with a girl who everyone else finds ordinary (or worse) compared to her more attractive sisters (NFL, NBA, NASCAR, etc.). She's never going to win any popularity contests, but as long as you see the beauty, to heck with everyone else.

ESPN only cut out in SEC markets. Sucks for hockey fans in SEC markets, but everyone else saw it.

I don't get it. Hockey is a superb sport for television. It's even better live. It has everything, high tempo, just right amount of scoring (more than soccer, not ridiculous like basketball) and it requires the athletes to be super trained in so many ways. How the hell can people prefer baseball or basketball to hockey? Football is pretty OK even though there are way too many whistles and stoppages in the play.

Wow. This is great hockey! :jump:

I was rooting for the Canadians when the game started but now, Holy super-biased home-ice refs, Batman! The Canadians get away with murder EVERY shift. The Czechs should have had multiple powerplays just before the Draper goal. Booo!

This tirade is getting old. The refs were bad. Sure. Just like when WE get shafted in Europe with the weirdest of calls in international competitions. We go play in Europe and we get called for a bodycheck. Face it: refs are bad everywhere. In the NHL, it's a known fact that outside Kerry Fraser, nobody calls penalties in the 3rd. Didn't you watch the Stanley Cup finals?

The Czechs and Canada always have exciting games, and this was no different.

Still showed enormous contempt for the viewer, whatever the coverage. No matter what, you stick with a game until it ends, or else you are saying @#& you to the viewer.

Yessir. And I'll take exciting over perfection any time. It wasn't the best played game I ever saw, but it was thrilling.

Too bad NHL hockey is rarely like that. But it really couldn't be - these are the best players on one rink and the game is for the right to play for the Cup.

Looking at the last 3 best-on-best tournaments:

1. 1998 - Nagano - Czech Republic 2 - Canada 1

Czechs win in a shootout after one period of overtime. The shootout was the last resort in this semi-final game.

2. 2002 - Salt Lake City - Czech Republic 3 - Canada 3

The two teams tie in a round robin game, the closest a game can be as there is no overtime or any tie-breakers.

3. 2004 - Toronto - Czech Republic 3 - Canada 4 (OT)

Canada wins this one in overtime, the last resort of this tournament.

Every one of these meetings has gone the distance...

So, a 1-1-1 record, 8 goals for, 7 goals against (not counting the shootout). Pretty damn even.

Luongo let in 2 bad softies tonight. Canada is lucky to escape with the win there.

The 1st one was soft but the last 2 were the TEAMS fault if you ask me. The 3rd one was a knuckler of the D-Man's foot and 9 times out of 10 that will go in no matter who's in net wether it be Luongo or the Great Roy himself.

Luongo saw more rubber than an 8 mile strip of highway tonight and we still won. Plus the guy hasn't played a GAME since the NHL season ended in April, so cut him a bit of slack. I was a little confused when Quinn didn't play him against Slovakia in the Prelim's to give him a bit of action IN CASE Brodeur got hurt......but that would've been a smart thing to do.

I think you're allowed to change your avatar dude :)

edit: You did so as I typed this. I look foolish.

Haha...Luongo played great. I'm glad Canada won, especially after seeing your lame prediction :) Someone sounds bitter!

Go Canada Go!

My "lame" prediction was based on mathematical grounds only...

7-2
6-1
5-0

See the pattern? It was more a joke than anything else.... :(

But I am bitter. I think the Czechs deserved to win this game. They pretty clearly wanted it more and really played their hearts out today.

In any event, Luongo proved to me today (he let up weak goals to give up the lead twice) that he is nowhere near Martin Brodeur.

With Brodeur's injury history... 3 missed games in 11 years... I don't think Quinn was worried about him getting hurt.

For a guy who loves Brodeur so much you'd think you'd be happy that you might get to see him play one more game on Monday night. COuld be the last time you see him for a year!!!!

He was due for an injury :)

I see your point, but strange things happen and there's always a chance that he could get hurt. Hopefully he's good to go Monday.

On a side note, for all the Luongo haters out there, Brodeur won't last forever and Luongo may well be our goalie in the years to come.
