In what way is the IIHF involved? Can you provide a link?

What, do you really think the NHL can simply infringe upon trademarks and copyright? National teams (hereinafter - NTs) and their associated uniforms are trademark property belonging to their national federations. If the NHL wants to run a commercial venture using NTs and similar uniforms, they need an agreement with the IIHF in order to do it.

Now, mind you, the NHL can come up with their own funky gimmicky teams, as an example NHL All-Stars from Finland and dress them up in funky purple and orange uniforms, if that's what they want... but somehow, I don't think the NHL Finnish contingent would be all that enthused to partake in such a venture.

Perhaps they could use it as a driving force to beat them in the alleys?

Out of curiosity, what news source do you use?
No need for beating anyone in the alleys. Russians can have their own games and other can have their own. Ukrainians can't participate on international events, because they're fighting a war and that is purely on Russians, so they shouldn't participate either.

I usually use sources from Finnish Defense Forces about events of the battlefield, because they filter all that 50/50 stuff and rumours out. International media and Finnish media on wide range. You don't have to look far to found reports on Izium or Bucha massacre.

Mass graves and war crimes. I don't know if I want to know what have really happened in the Mariupol. Russians have odd way of liberating Ukraine of nazis, since there isn't any and then they blindly kill civilians and brake the rules of international combat laws by executing surrendered soldiers.

As long as Russian people and players like Ovechkin or Malkin support Putin they should be banned from international sports including World Cup. Who really in the right mind want to play agains Russia at the moment.

Russians are people and inviduals, but as long as Ukrainians can't participate and are under threat of genocide, it shouldn't be allowed. Russia has long history of using sports as propaganda weapon and have done national doping program on Sotchi Olympics, so I don't really miss them. Daly's message is already small victory for Putin and will be distort so it supports Russian end goals.

Off course it's sad if you think about from perspective of World Cup or hockey, but you should really think about from the perspective of Ukrainians and that isn't sad. It's tragedy with no point at all.

Back in the 2016 it was defined as "The World Cup of Hockey is a joint effort of the NHLPA and the NHL, in cooperation with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF)".

However back in 2004 I don't think there was any cooperation at all, as even Lithuanian Dainius Zubrus was allowed to represent Russia. No idea how it will be this time, but sounds like at least some sort of a cooperation is expected to be there.

They can't do anything without the Finnish hockey association's permission. Plus many Finnish players have already spoken about the situation and fully support the ban.

The NHL has every right to comprise their own team Finland without Finnish Hockey Permission.
Of course they'd be prohibited from using official Finnish Federation symbols, slogans, depictions, etc.

As stated above, Zubrus played for Russia in 2004; and other guys 'illegally' played for other teams in the past.

But you're right, like I said, It's up to the players (NHLPA) if they want to participate under such circumstances.

In 2004 it was the same cooperation as well, it's just that the usual IIHF player eligibility rules aren't applied which has enabled some players to represent different teams than they perhaps otherwise would or could.

It wouldn't make a difference since everyone know they're still Russians.

I am going to drop out of this thread.

Too many posters upset over something they/we have no control over. You can argue among yourselves. Enjoy.

This is exactly what putin hopes for... but in fact we can have control - if the civilized world stands united and reacts appropriately to what this terrorist regime is doing. That means supporting Ukraine in any way you can and all kinds of sanctions vs current russia, including all russian sports teams to be banned from all events as long as putler is not dead or in prison and their next leadership at least apologizes for what russia has done.

Is it only open to members of the PA or can teams bring in imports?
Czech team had several Euro leagues on their team at the 2016 World Cup - Jordan, Kundratek, Nakladal, Briner, Cervenka and Sobotka. No, I didn't like our nominations.lol But that was also a very low point for us (I'd say we are in slightly better shape for the 2024 World Cup). Jagr didn't go and was a top 6 scorer (for us) either.

Looking at the roster now, I hate this team.lol

The IIHF has always been involved in the Canada/World Cups. There were discussions with the IIHF prior to the 1976 Canada Cup and part of the agreement for the IIHF endorsing the tournament was Canada returning to IIHF tournaments, with professionals allowed. Even Daly has already said that Russia will not be there as Russia if the country is still banned by the IIHF. The NHL has shown that it can stupidly make up gimmick teams if it wants, though the federations have a significant say. For example the young gunz team was only made with the permission of Hockey Canada and USA Hockey, with Hockey Canada embarrassingly agreeing to it quickly while USA Hockey needed convincing.

If significant federations say that they will not participate if proxy-Russia is there then those players won't go and the NHL, fearing embarrassment and the inevitable bad publicity of sacrificing big teams just to include Russia, won't use proxy-Russia.

Many teams have players in Europe that are considered almost locks for teams even if his NHL players are available. They are just able to adapt to different level of competition and considered great team players or able to play by the system.

Since this thread is about rosters.. here is the Czech roster last time

I've highlighted our 'D'... now, I like these guys and am a fan of all of them but I don't think that D core got over 200 NHL points COMBINED in the NHL.lol I know they are D and more to it then points but holy hell!

They also put Hemsky as the 13th forward.

Amazingly, this shitshow of a team did okay for themselves... Got the shit kicked out of us in Game 1 and then turned it around a little. Counting pre tourney (normally I wouldn't but this was a bit different) they played 6 games, 5 of them were 1 goal games (with 2 shootouts) and this was a weak paper roster (C's were Plekanec, Faksa and Hanzal - I love all 3 but I think Connor has surpassed their career totals by now.lol)

Pre tournament (forgot this happened to be honest)

Lost 3-2 to Russia
Beat Russia 2-1 in Shootout
Beat Team North America (Connor and Friends) 3-2

Actual tourney:

Canada smoked us 6-0 (I still remember the Kempny giveaway with 10 seconds left in first, may have broken a table.lol)
Lost 3-2 in OT to Team Europe (your finalists.lol)
Beat the US 4-3!!!

I point this out for the NHL paper roster fans who think US and Canada are just miles ahead of everyone else. Outside of a Canada shitkicking (TM).. all our games were 1 goal games. Swiss, Latvia and Slovakia have all given Canada nightmares too at best on bests.

Note: this thread will be locked soon if it continues to be about genocide, war and atrocities.
This is what a post on rosters looks like and potential world cup talk. And we already lost Orrforever who is a great Canuck poster. There is LOTS to argue about... what would Team Canada B look like, THIS is the place to do that.lol How will the US C's look? Will the Finn D be enough with backchecking forwards to sustain their amazing momentum? Will Swede D still be cream of the crop? Lehner playing? Walstedt ready? Markstrom the starter? Jiricek an NHLer by then? Dahlin a Norris contender by then? Bedard ready? Will Josi still be an elite D at that age? Connor and Crosby finally on the same team? Marchand still a hero 8 years later? How many NHLers will the Swiss have? Who the heck will the goalie be for the Swiss? Any of the 8 or so Czech goalies be a legit star by then (Vejmelka, Vanecek, Vladar, Mrazek, Rittich, Dostal, Skarek, Francouz)? Will the 'other German's' (Bokk, Reichel, Peterka) be full time and effecitve NHLers? Grubauer still a stud? how good will Stutzl be by then? Will the new breed of Slovak's be enough to carry a team that lost a generation of players (only 4 guys played over 50 games last season and one was Chara)? Is there an NHL slovak goalie coming?

Just off the top of my head.lol

Totally agree... I think, in our case, it was a lack of talent that forced this though.

Currently, looking at 2024 - The only Euro Czech I'd want will be Krejci assuming he returns. Cervenka will be near 40, Kovar isn't great on the smaller ice. I can't think of a Euro D that is going to be dominant at that point.. I would've said Klok but I think he'll be in the NHL (my fav offseason signing by Arizona).

I know Finn's can win a world's with LIIGA players and have an elite coach who can win with them. Do you think he'd cut NHL guys for Liiga (or Euro league) guys in 2024? I feel like Finn's could ice an all NHL roster easily in 2024?

FTR.. Germans only had 4 players play over 50 games this season too. I know 'they are coming' but they really need some guys to step up this season.

I do think Stutzl is in for a hell of a season! Ottawa looks much improved and he will have a lot of support now too!

yes!! this is the sort of thing we should be discussing here with one exception, the Canada B team stuff, please for the love of God let's not get that going.

A little fun fact is that the German World Cup top scorer remains Peter Draisaitl of the Kölner Haie who scored 5 points in 4 games in 1996, even his son sits at only 2 in 6 at the moment. Germany famously demolished the Czechs 7:1 back then with a roster including only Washington's Olaf Kölzig and Stefan Ustorf from the NHL.

But you gotta know if Canada loses a game, it's coming!lol

Some more fun facts: Draisaitl become an Extraliga coach and his Leon used to (maybe still does) a lot of his offseason training in Prague.

More fun facts.. the German Jr team has won their last 3 matches against us at the World Jrs. They absolutely have our number right now.

Also, that 1996 roster was stacked with very good NHL players and got smoked! Then they went with a different approach in 1998 in Nagano.. I'm very thankful for the 1996 demolition!

Agree, jj. NO CANADA B talk, please.
It bugs me when posters do it during the Worlds. They come on, clearly aren't watching the tourney and then start posting rosters. Here, kind of feels like a great place to do it! It's literally on topic.haha

True, but that is inevitable.

In 2024, Canada is not strong enough for a B Team.

We can revisit it, again, in 2028. :)
I haven't agreed with the narrative tbh. It's on here and a lot of people agree. I think Canada will be the odds on fav to win. They are crushing worlds, jrs, u18's, hlinkas, bedard is coming... Makar is insanely good, 20 or more NHL goalies to pick from. Unleashing Connor onto the international world. I go to bed not worried about Canada winning it.lol
