World Cup of Hockey to Return (Feb 2024)

Why is that, next Winter Olympics is 2026.

My understanding from earlier reporting is that the NHL does not want the players to play in future Olympics games (for obvious reasons) and the best way to get out of that would be to negotiate with the NHLPA to bring the World Cup back and allow the players to play for their home countries during the summer months rather than take a 2 week break in the middle of the season every 4 years for the winter games.

My understanding was it was CBA negotiated last year.

Is anyone from Finland, Sweden, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland etc, going to wake up to watch this?

Why would they, most Canadian won't watch either. During the Olympics entire offices, schools, business stop to watch Hockey. It's pure magic like anywhere else around the world if ones country is creating memorable moments.

The nhl tournaments have no prestige. International play and who is the World's best country at Hockey can only be decided at the Olympics. Everything else is useless.

The Ioc is mad corrupt. But equally as corrupt is the nhl if not more and especially those idiot Americans running it.

If the rosters are good and there are no gimmick teams, I’ll watch it.

I watched the 2004 World Cup and there were some epic games, like the OT semifinal where Jagr was beasting against Canada and Lecavalier scored the winner, and Finland making the final of a best on best tournament only to lose a relatively close game.

Whether it’s the Olympics or the World Cup doesn’t matter to me. It’s the rosters that count. If it takes place in February when the players are in prime shape, all the better.

In football, no one cares about the Olympics because the World Cup is the signature event.

There’s nothing particularly special about the Olympics when it comes to team sports.

"commit to the Olympics, subject to acceptable terms"

so no commitment then, lol
They’re committed, assuming no Covid, and the IOC and NHL agree. The IOC has been stubborn in the past.
As opposed to nothing in the CBA, and the NHL can decide without the PA,
now the PA has to agree not to go, like this year.

I enjoyed the 2016 version of this for what it was. The Young stars team was fun and exciting to watch, but it's hard to re-create that team when you don't have another McDavid and Matthews on it.

Nothing replaces the Olympics though, they should just do this every 4 years in between Olympics.

February tournament? Good to know that the shutting down mid-seasom excuse was a bunch of malarkey.
Two years Olympics then 2 years World Cup, rinse and repeat.
Yes owners don’t like shutting down league during their peak periods.
Last year was agreed upon between PA and league to not go, due to Covid.
