Better than the Olympics where if an important player goes down you lose them for the home stretch and possibly playoffs.

Games at the beginning of the year are equally as important as games at the end of the year...

Every single year there are teams who miss the playoffs by single digit points. If they win one or two more games at any time of the year, beginning or end, it could be the difference maker.

You're right about the playoffs though.

Am I missing something, this isn't telling me when the real games start.

Also Giroux scratched. So I guess he's really hurt or not good enough.

This is what Babcock thinks imo, Not using G at least properly on the PP is baffling. Toews over G on a PP should never happen.

You mean Toews who had 9 power play pts last year shouldn't be over one of the best power play players in the game?

While Giroux's % is lower than Toews i'll post the stats to continue conversation:

2015-16:
Toews on PP: 128W/73L 63.7% (4th with Players over 100 FO)
Giroux on PP: 239W/148L 61.8% (5th with Players over 100 FO)

Giorux has 206 powerplay points in 574 career games (3rd in the NHL since becoming a full time NHL player)
Toews has 150 powerplay points in 645 career games (49th in the NHL since becoming a full time NHL player)

That 1.9% higher PP faceoff percentage definitely bridges that gap though. :sarcasm:

I'm fine with scratching Giroux from a Flyers' perspective. Can't get hurt and feels more rested and hungry relative to other players at the WC.

Thanks for looking out Babs. :sarcasm:

I am glad he made the team. But of he is still not 100%, I am quite fine with him sitting. He had 2 surgeries, is older than say Couts or Ghost so might take a big longer to heal.

But more importantly, I want him ready for the season. Plus, if he feels he is being snubbed, he will use that as motivation. Last time it led him to 3rd in league scoring.

How do people not realize that he's sitting as a precaution? Being scratched doesn't mean the injury is a huge deal or that he's not going to get to play.

He took some damage in the previous warmup games so why risk playing him in games that don't matter? Better to let him rest and be as healthy as possible for the real games.

That said, it's obviously possible he sits in the real games, but him sitting now has exactly zero to do with that.

My thinking is that there is very little separating lots of forwards....and if G is banged up a bit, someone else who is 100% healthy should play.

It's not like G is being replaced by an AHL callup. Replacing him with a healthy Perry for example is not a big difference. They are all good.

Just try Seguin and Giroux together. They've shown terrific chemistry in the past. But no, can't do that.

Unfortunately, they're kind of fighting for the same spot in the lineup, if Thornton is going back to centre.

I'd like to see that, as well, though. The had great chemistry at the WHC.

Marchand-Crosby-Bergeron
Tavares-Toews-Stamkos
Thornton/Duchene/Couture-Getzlaf-Perry
Thornton/Duchene/Couture-Giroux-Seguin

With one of Duchene/Couture sitting.

If Giroux's injury is more serious, though, I'm not bothered with him missing the last pre-tournament game and possibly a game or two in the tournament. Inevitably someone is going to get hurt, so he'll be back in even if he is the 13th forward.
