World Cup of hockey 2024, will it happen?

Will it happen?

What's the big deal about the Olympics? The biggest and most lucrative scam ever. A bunch of old men take money and gifts under the table to allow some country and its citizens to foot the bill for the whole thing. They don't supply the labour, the athletes are the labour, TV networks drool all over themselves to buy the rights and pass along those expenses to advertisers. Meanwhile the old men involved ask for thousands of unpaid volunteers to staff the venues at no cost to them.

I don't mean to belittle the athletes it isn't their fault.

These old men also did their best to restrict the best hockey players from certain countries from playing for more than 50 years in their little sandbox. Sometimes even changing the rules on the fly. Now they realize hockey as their cash cow. Screw them. A legitimate hockey World Cup doesn't need the Olympics nor the way they conduct their business

Whatever it's faults otherwise, the IOC provides tens of millions of dollars to the development of international hockey. The NHL has never signaled any willingness to do the same with its World Cup.

I'm sure Czechia and Sweden are so thankful for this, considering they have been plummeting under the IIHF's watch. The NHL would be far better at developing the game.

Who cares?

Any real hockey fan

Buttman ruined the whole thing with the gimmick teams last time out.

The massive crowds that turned out for each game and millions more who watched the games want to disagree with you. He had all the best players in the world at the World Cup and it was the quality of play was better than I'd ever seen before.

I mean, a true best on best Olympic gold medal has a certain cache no other tournament does, but at the end of the day a well put together World Cup would scratch the itch. A ton of talent across the board.

Remind me, what was Team Rest of Europe’s national anthem again?

Was it Sandstorm by Darude?

Those are the same crowds you get at any Canadian regular season game and the "millions" that watched were no big deal, certainly vastly miniscule compared to the Olympics or a PO game. Also practically no one talks about the results of it, like none of the games mattered at all. Glorified ASG. People are still referring to 2014 and 2010 OGs as the benchmarks for best-on-best hockey comparisons.

Really, any game involving NA23, Europe, Canada or USA was rubbish in terms of using it as results given how the rosters were BS for all of them. Hence the only games that meant anything were games involving Finland, Sweden, Czechs and ROC against each other, of which the sample size is very low and a hodgepodge of a mess.

Not that I particularly liked the gimmicky teams but tell me how they are more fake then Team China at the Olympics? At least they were what they were supposed to be...

he was referring to team North America which consisted of the best under 23 players from North America and Team Europe which was the best European players not in the tourney, wtf is that is correct.

No more team NA and team EU. just send the best 8 teams and make them compete for the World Cup.

Maybe but the other kind of football doesn't need the Olympic games. Canadians will support a best on best World Cup.

You're supposed to just forget about soccer when discussing how the Olympics is always the pinnacle of sports, how having the best players there doesn't matter, how no major sport doesn't send its best athletes to the Olympics, and how the world the world cup can never match up to the Olympics just because. At least play the game by the rules.

The World Cup of Hockey will certainly never be as big as the Olympics are in soccer, even if that's not the biggest event in that particular sport.

I disagree... I don't think there is a soccer board anywhere on the internet or a fanbase upset that soccer doesn't have best on best formats.

I get your point about them not going to the Olympics... that is true but they have a legit tourney every 2 years as well as friendlies and qualifiers with star players. Best on best soccer is always happening. Best on best hockey is never happening. McDavid has never played for Team Canada at a best on best.. I can't think of one elite soccer player that hasn't represented his country in the last 7 years (when McD entered the NHL).

Not that I know everyone on the internet.. but is anyone complaining about a lack of best on bests in soccer?

I would like to see it in the middle of the season. August/September is such an odd time for a hockey big tournament like this.

None of that has relevance to what I said. The mindless claims that the Olympics is always the pinnacle in every sport, every sport sends its best athletes to the Olympics, etc. are demonstrably false if someone only takes a look at soccer.

Basketball is the only Big 5 sport that has a best-on-best Olympic tournament. And it's dull and it doesn't help grow the game at all. USA always wins, and nobody cares.

The comments below the tweet were mostly fans upset about this.

Curious how many they do.. I still think quick tourney, 6 teams, round robin. Best of 3 final.
