Will it happen?

I hope there will be a legitimate best of the best tournament instead that is not run by one of the leagues.

If NHL tries to pull another stunt like the last one I wouldn’t be surprised if the countries in the rest of the world simply won’t chose to participate.

I lean toward yes, there is some talk of a World Cup floating around and that timeframe provides enough time to be more than prepared. I hope that it does take place but only without the bullshit gimmicks. If the NHL wants to bring back the Euro Leftovers or the Yung Gunz then the tournament should be abandoned before it starts.

Agreed. I boycotted the last tournament because it was an absolute fraud. Fake teams and fake jerseys. Absolutely crap.

Not that I particularly liked the gimmicky teams but tell me how they are more fake then Team China at the Olympics? At least they were what they were supposed to be...

europe's national federations should ignore such a tournament organised by a private company, what interest would they have in a tournament held in NA with impossible playing times for their fans? let the NHL have fun with its all-star BS

Would anyone notice if they did?

I voted for no. 2026 Olympics will be the tournament we should wait for. By then the odds are pretty much even. Canada might not be that clear favourite then, others have a chance too.

I thought the last World Cup was great. Will they do it, again?...

Depends if Covid does, in fact, go away. If yes, we will see one before the next Olympics. If not... no.

I don't think it did great financially at least to what they expected hosting in Toronto. I can't imagine other cities bringing in more revenue than Toronto. That might keep the NHL from having it again.

Canada will definitely be the favourite in 2026 still. Lose Crosby - add Bedard and Wright.

The forward group will be ridiculous as always but I think there is the potential for a equally ridiculous D corp.

Makar
Ekblad
Power
Drysdale
Byram
Chabot
Theodore
Hamilton
Toews
Weegar
Rielly
Nurse

Could be an amazing pool to pull from.

If someone like Cossa steps up to be the Top goalie we need then its all over but the crying.

Should? With the gimmick teams, it shouldn't happen. Scrapped before it reaches planning phase. Without the gimmick teams and 6-8 or even 10 nations, yes, as it would mark the 10 year anniversary since the last best on best (sorry, but 2016 was not a best on best. Team USA was worse than the Czechs and missing a ton of stars to the idiotic U23 team and Canada wasted a final playing against an European C level all star team).

Will it happen? I'm led to believe so based on reporting from local media. They are pretty serious about getting one together and there is interest from both the NHLPA and the NHL. Notably, there is a very strong sense the last format will not be repeated.

I didn't realize the financial numbers weren't good. That's surprising - Canada will usually OVER pay for International hockey.

I took my dad to the Russian/Canada game during the 2004 World Cup. I paid a ton for 2 tickets - I bought the tickets off a corporate acquaintance who got them for free. I remember he was reluctant to take my cheque / he wanted cash - not because he didn't trust me, but because he didn't want a money trail.

Anyway, the game was great. Was it worth the over payment? Not sure about that.

The U.S. team will be really strong.

I look forward to the current crop of Canadian youngsters (from 2019 - 2023 drafts) stepping up - we will likely have to wait until 2026 to see them.

I was at a few of the games in 2016. It was great hockey and all the players in the world were playing. Keep the format and do it every four years. Hockey needs a best on best tournament to showcase itself. 2016 did that more than any other tournament.

Ah yes, unlike such upstanding organisations as the IOC.
What interest would they have in a tournament held in North America... or China, or Japan, or South Korea?

Your disgust and disinterest in a World Cup is fine. But your logic is hard to take seriously.
