North American countries are just incapable of producing good defenders

It's really about the training and academy situation. Canada and the US are still building appropriate infrastructure.

Attacking talent is usually the first thing that can be developed because it's sexy. The most talented players want to attack and score goals and it's easier for them to move abroad to finish developing.

It'll come in time, but it's not surprising that solid defensive players aren't as abundant in the systems now.

They are. If you're a young soccer player in Canada and have potential, you should be heading to Europe as soon as you can. This country does not properly fund youth development in this sport.
Yup. We are still getting volunteer dads coming out to coach due to their 5 year experience of watching 20 min of MLS action.
Probably because anyone half decent is put up front as a kid.

Thought process I have observed:

"Kids got speed...he can be an attacker."
"Kids got height...best to be utilized in back."
"Put the slow kid at midfield so they can pass."

I remember helping out a coach by suggesting we put a decently fast footed guy as a CDM and he was totally bewilded as to why...

You can win without that. Can't win without good midfielders and defenders.

just in context of this game. I didn't think Canada generated any decent half chances either.

Anyway Canada develops some quality midfielders and defenders is MLS grows, there is more money in MLS and Canada is able to attract some of the best in the world to come here coach/play/share experience. Until that happens Canadian soccer ain't going anywhere IMO

First thing would be to get MLS big financially which I am not sure how that would happen in a hockey crazed market where hockey thrives in winter when its snowing; but then in summer people like to do their own thing instead of attending major sporting events or sitting in front of the tv and watching
