it's a great hockey tournament still, why can't we enjoy it as it is
Because, at the moment, we don't know whether it will add or detract to the existing hockey landscape.
As of right now, we have three scenarios.
A. The League intends this to be a lasting replacement for the best-on-best Olympics, gimmicks an'all.
My stance: No friggin' way.
B. The League goes to the Olympics as normal, the World Cup with its gimmicks is merely an additional tournament.
My stance: Meh, it's still a silly idea, but then again, the world is full of silly ideas.
C. The League withdraws from the Olympics, but develops the World Cup into bona fide replacement with no gimmicks and minds that all the players taking part don't have to play in the NHL.
My stance: Will do.
Since the League has, at best, given vague hints about what their plans for future are - I'll be doing all I can to relay them the message that scenario A is a very, very stupid idea. At the very least, I refuse to be part of the unwitting crowd that pushes them towards it.
