I mean, I don't know about boycotting but I wasn't planning on watching this event. I don't see why I was supposed to get excited about some contrived event by the NHL strictly for a money grab. This does not replace international play for me at all.

I might watch the final if the schedule is allright (certainly not gonna get up in the middle of the night for it), if the NHL agrees to participate in the olympics before this preseason tournament starts.

If not, well, some long rant about stupid exceptionalistan will probably get me banned here for much longer than this silly tournament will exist.

I'd be more likely to watch this is they at least went full ridiculous.

Team British Empire: Canada and USA.

Team Central Powers Grossdeutchland: Germany Czechs Slovaks Austria Switzerland Slovenia aka kopitaristan.

Team Swedish empire: Sweden Latvia Denmark Norway

Team Russian empire: Russia Kazakhs Belarus Finland.

I'm intrigued by this idea even though I hate aligning with the States. I'll have to make up so teams and see how it looks later.

I will not watching because this tournament holds zero prestige in my eyes. They need to have more countries participating and absolutely not have "Team Europe/North America".

I feel like they don't respect the principles of fair competition if they don't allow more countries to at least try to qualify instead of lumping them together. If they fix this, I don't mind if the NHL runs the tourney, but right now it's an international allstar event.

As a hockey fan, how could you not be excited for this. Lol this tourney is gonna be sick

Once the round robin is over I think you will see a lot of naysayers jump on board. Are you seriously not going to watch a Canada v Russia semifinal because you object to the tournaments format?

I won't boycott it if it's shown in Russian national TV, but I'm not going out of my way for this tourney.

This is genius.

And should one or both of the gimmicks make it, I trust we'll hear some people not minding them now voice their displeasure and call it a stupid idea to include them.

Problem with gimmick teams is too much parity. They're too competitive. If say team Europe beats team USA that would make a lot of Americans mad because we don't have our best team out there. Obviously the hope is that those teams lose as scheduled, like they're supposed to. But if they're disobedient or rebellious, if they begin to put personal glory ahead of corporate success, that could make for a long day at espn.

Living here in Toronto, i will still check out the games, even though i hate the concept of these two gimmick teams. Imagine if Canada faces Team North America in the finals, it is essentially Team Canada vs. Team Canada. Switzerland and Slovakia should have been the two other teams besides these two gimmick teams. However, it is what it is. Once the games are underway, i know a lot of people will change their tunes.

I probably will but as a US fan knowing we are handicapped for no reason is infuriating

No, I personally won't watch Russia vs Canada O24.

I think it's a shame they turned one of the most prestigious hockey tournaments into a joke. Can't understand what's wrong with just having Slovakia and Switzerland? Or just a six-team tourney?

it's a great hockey tournament still, why can't we enjoy it as it is :dunno:

What if this year was your (or mine) last year in life and it was your last chance to see best players in the world? Would you still complain about the tournament or would you enjoy it? People percieve things like it's given....we should be thankful that we even get to watch such great games.

We can see something different, exciting.

I'll be watching. Everybody complains about hockey not getting enough attention, and now that ESPN has the rights to the tourney you're all going to boycott it and hurt the ratings? Makes sense.

Problem: It should be "Kalmar Union" not "Swedish empire" as it never included Denmark. For most of the history Finland is tied to Sweden (was only part of Russia for 100 years 1809-1917).
So Kalmar Union flag for Team Denmark, Finland, Norway & Sweden:

Latvia could also be placed under "Grossdeutchland" or Russia, than team Kalmar Union.

You also miss the "true Team France" with Quebec and a lot more of North America to make it more interesting in matches with Team British Empire!

The idea is less silly than the current leftover "Team Europe".
This could instead be an Imperial/Royal tournament as secretly Republicans miss royalty deep inside :sarcasm:

Because, at the moment, we don't know whether it will add or detract to the existing hockey landscape.

As of right now, we have three scenarios.

A. The League intends this to be a lasting replacement for the best-on-best Olympics, gimmicks an'all.
My stance: No friggin' way.

B. The League goes to the Olympics as normal, the World Cup with its gimmicks is merely an additional tournament.
My stance: Meh, it's still a silly idea, but then again, the world is full of silly ideas.

C. The League withdraws from the Olympics, but develops the World Cup into bona fide replacement with no gimmicks and minds that all the players taking part don't have to play in the NHL.
My stance: Will do.

Since the League has, at best, given vague hints about what their plans for future are - I'll be doing all I can to relay them the message that scenario A is a very, very stupid idea. At the very least, I refuse to be part of the unwitting crowd that pushes them towards it.

Not all players playing in the World Cup need to play in the NHL. The Czechs have a couple of KHLers and so will Russia.

Are players going to actually try in this tourny? Will there be hitting or is it gonna be ASG gliding style of play.
