My understanding is that since it is an NHL sanctioned event and not an IIHF sanctioned event, there is no plan to play ANY of the country anthems regardless of who wins.

If one of the big six win, they won't be playing that country's anthem.

One of the reasons, for me at least, it takes some of the shine off of this event.

But, as some others have stated, there isn't an anthem for Team Europe or the North American young stars.

Your understanding is off. The IIHF and the national federations are involved.

Involved but not run by them as International tournaments should be.

No anthems was announced earlier, only perhaps final.

Typical of a cash grab tournament run by a horrendous organization, degrading the tournament even more, if it's even possible since it's already the worst organized event in the history of Hockey.

I hope Europe wins, can you imagine how much the nhl will be laughed at, it'll be amazing.

If it is a terrible meaningless horribly organized event and no fan zone to share culture, then why would it matter who wins? Why would the NHL be laughed at? If anything, it would show the mixed team was a good idea AND the players WERE motivated to play for the mixed team.

To me, the anthem should be reserved for the Gold medal game.

Do they play anthems after every game in the Olympics?

Or the other teams were less motivated...

The Olympics is a multi sport event, not a single sport event.

Right, let's not have moments like these, touching moments like these, or hearing the Russians sing loud and proud after a victory. International Hockey is unique, it's the only team sport to have anthem played after a game, after victory. The pride felt after a emotional victory is unmatched.

But alas, most nhl fans don't even know there's other countries that play Hockey.

I'm sure buttman doesn't even know there's continents in this world. His mind ends in North America, it must be tough for him to know other countries then Canada and the US exist. Maybe that's why he only promotes it in one country, he doesn't want other countries to know about it so he can avoid hearing other anthems, which is what Europeans would do after a game. Start singing the anthem either way.

You should really participate in an international tournament, it's quite hilarious how the nhl has confused your mind with its propaganda. You don't seem to have much knowledge of International sports or settings.

So, the answer to my question is, "no"? So, I guess the Olympics have ruined International Hockey because they do not play the winning team's anthem after every game?

I have watched Russians sing their anthem. I remember when they won the World Jrs a few years ago and watching their kids celebrate and singing. That was pretty cool. After every game? Unnecessary, imo.

I really do not care about the rest of your B.S.

An international event does not need the IIHF to run it. The frustrating thing is that this tournament has been run successfully in the past, with the NHL in charge. They messed up in pretty much the most basic way. An "international tournament" must have two things: 1. A tournament with matches 2. Those matches to be contested between national teams. This event is missing number 2, and thus is a failure before it even begins.

So, what anthem will they play when Team Europe Win a game, or the American team win...Will they make some new anthem just for these games ? =)

The team America song for the youth team. America. **** yeah gonna save the mother*****ing day yeah.

Seeing as they are the American team I suspect they will play the American national anthem.

A better question might be what will they play if the U23 North American team happens to win a game.

Since 1997, the NHL has played 64 games outside of the United States and Canada. These games include:

Russia - Carolina (one game) in 2010

Latvia - Phoenix (one game) in 2010

Austria - Buffalo and Tampa Bay (three games) in 1998, Los Angeles (two games) in 2007

Puerto Rico (not a country, but still) - Florida/NY Rangers (one game) in 2006

England - Anaheim/Los Angeles (two games) in 2007

Germany - Tampa Bay (one gmae) in 2008, San Jose (one game) in 2010, Los Angeles/Buffalo (three games) in 2011

Switzerland - NY Rangers (two games) in 2008, Chicago (two games) in 2009, NY Rangers (one game) in 2011

Slovakia - Tampa Bay (one game) in 2008, NY Rangers (one game) in 2011

Czech Republic - NY Rangers/Tampa Bay (two games) in 2008, Boston/Phoenix (three games) in 2010, NY Rangers (one game) in 2011

Northern Ireland - Boston (one game) in 2010

Japan - Anaheim/Vancouver (two games) in 1997, Calgary/San Jose (two games) in 1998, Nashville/Pittsburgh (two games) in 2000

Sweden - Vancouver (two games) in 2000, Colorado (one game) in 2001, Toronto (two games) in 2003, Ottawa and Pittsburgh (three games) in 2008, St. Louis and Detroit (four games) in 2009, Columbus and San Jose (three games) in 2010, New York, Los Angeles, and Anaheim (three games) in 2011

Finland - Toronto (one game) in 2003, Pittsburgh (one game) in 2008, Florida/Chicago (four games) in 2009, Carolina/Minnesota (three games) in 2010

By my count, that involves games in three different continents and ten different countries (plus three more that are part of a larger body: England, Northern Ireland, and Puerto Rico).

Oh, and let's see what else...the 1998 Olympics involved NHL players, as did the 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 games as well.

And the Canada Cup was resurrected and rebranded as the World Cup.

And the NHL All-Star Game was changed from its traditional conference v. conference setup in order to feature a North American v. The World game...five times.

Now, did I simply take some really strange drugs around 1997 and hallucinate everything that's happened since then that I outlined above? Or did it actually happen?

There's actually no need to make an anthem for Team Europe, since Europe - as in the continent as a whole - DOES have a de facto official anthem. It's called "Ode to Joy".

It'd be curious to hear though what they'd end up playing for the YoungGunz. I could get all smarmy and snarky here, but a "serious" solution would probably entail just playing both the Canadian and American anthems. (What would be funny is applying the same solution for the Leftovers.)

Money money money by Pink Floyd.

As you said it happened in the past. They stopped sending teams to Europe in preseason. They realized its not that valuable for them and rather built multilanguages websites...I dont think there is any big interest to attract european fans through other way than online. Last time NHL team went to Europe was 2011. It would be interesting to read serious report from it. There could be three main issues: weak opponnents, schedule, cost efficiency...

Rene Fasel Interview

''The most important tournament is the OLYMPICS. Then we have every year, like we have Wimbledon, Roland Garos, we have our World Championships. Going to a different country every year celebrating the game, and finishing the season. We do not have the best names, but that's okay, but we do not need caviar every year, everyday, if we have caviar everyday, what for? World Championship every year , celebration of Hockey...then we have the world cup.''

Though he does glowingly (Forced) about the uniqueness of the world cup, he uses the term ''it's a show, entertainment'', for the fans there, he was referring to as per earlier in the interview. ''Maybe in a different format, if they keep it in 4 years.'' Lol, I think it sums up what anyone with any knowledge of Hockey thinks of that cash grab. It's the third event, almost a cast off event for North American Hockey fans, nothing in the prestigious reign of a Worlds or Olympics. He just can't make his real opinion heard lol.

On a side note, seems he's talking to loads of people about the $10 million fee. Hard to tell, but if Pyeongchang organizers are serious, with other parties I can see that sum being raised.

Brilliant man, the way he compares Hockey and art, you can see the pure love of the game and what it means to him.

Unlike buttfruit over in New York. I wonder what he even understands of the sport.

Playing the anthem every single game is a IIHF thing.

Canada/USA anthem before every game thats it

The last World Cup had anthems every game, prior to puck drop. The guy who did many of the European anthems was great.
