I keep reading on these boards that this new World Cup format is just a cash grab. Bettman and company chose this format with the two made up teams because they think this would make for the best tournament possible.
If they thought adding the next two nations (Switzerland and Slovakia) would bring in more revenue they would have chose them to participate. If the fans choose to buy tickets and tv ratings are good than Bettman will believe the change in format a success.
I will not be watching at all, i am not interested in this crazy format. However, i am hoping the fans show their disproval for this sham of a World Cup by not buying tickets or watching it on tv.

In a capitalist system the consumer decides what they want. I am hoping they reject this. So in the future we can see a real world cup with only national teams.

They're staging this dog turd of an event in Toronto for a reason. It's the hockey town with the most solid reputation for having fans gullible enough to pay huge prices for garbage product.

More people will watch Team Europe vs Canada than any single game in the WHC.

How did you calculate this? If Russia makes it to the final in WHC, the game will be massive in Russia. I can't see Europe vs. Canada drawing more TV viewers than a WHC final featuring Russia, cause Russia has 144 million people against Canada's 36 million. Europe vs. Canada won't have many viewers in Europe (it's the middle of the night here) or in the USA (they don't care).

That commercial tonight with the Sedins, Rask etc is tugging at the heart strings....drawing me in...can't fight this feeling anymore....I won't doubt this format anymore......lets row this ship ashore and throw away the oar forever....

I love how in the main commercial the Czech players and fans use the Olympic win in Nagano as the moment that will never be surpassed in importance for them (and rightfully so). Kind of funny to use an Olympic gold medal victory as a bragging point in a commercial for a tournament that has been created to undermine and try to replace the Olympic tournament. Just underlines how clueless the NHL is with international hockey fans.

What kind of commercial?

Do you think anything could possibly top 1980 for the Americans? If you ask Canadians for their top moment you'll get a mix of 1972, 1987, and 2010.

Besides, 1998 the Czechs best won a tournament against every other country's best. THAT is what is important.

Can't find it on youtube, maybe someone else can but it basically has fans and players from each country participating bragging on their respective country's hockey history and why they will come out victorious.

It's important because unlike this upcoming world cup the Olympics have prestige and actually matter.

Matter to who? If it is not best-on-best, then it really doesn't matter as far as I am concerned. But, I guess that is for everyone to decide individually. Like I said, if Russia wins gold because their KHL all-stars can beat the US or Canada's KHL/AHL/CHL/NCAA all-stars. Then great for them. Doesn't really mean anything for who is the top hockey nation.

I would like to watch it but I already know that most of the time I will be unable to watch it.

Still, excited to see/read the reception of this edition of the World Cup. I'm not very enthusiastic about the continent teams and hope there will be a qualifying system for the next edition (which will hopefully be played within four years). Otherwise it's cool to have a best-on-best tournament. (Yeah, it is despite Canada and USA being over-23 teams, some of the best just are found in the U23 team.) And if there will be no longer NHL participation at the OWG, this will be the best tournament there car be in international hockey, the IIHF Worlds will always be a second-tier event just as the OWG would also be without NHL participation. Hoping for a good tournament.

So there are teams for players over the age of 23 and a team for players under the age of 23? This means that Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, Scheifele and Couturier won't get to take part, cause they're neither over or under the age of 23.

When will people stop talking about an "U23 team". Even in this thread you can see it all the time. It's not U23, it's U24.

Nobody cares about semantics

Everyone supporting this tournament never really loved hockey. (Germans will understand that statement ;) )

It's not best-on-best either. When Canadas men lose to the US they will say that they were missing McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins. And it goes on and on. I'd like a football-like World Cup, every 4 years, qualification games every now and then, but of course this will never happen.

So I'm just hoping that the NHL will still send players to the Olympics.

This is probably what the people talking about "U23" said when they constantly failed their math tests at school.

It would be kind of funny if great young Canadians like Gaudreau and Eichel helped their team win this tournament.

I agree this format is a joke and a clear cash grab but the NHL is not going to Korea and the IIHF has no plans for a real world cup.

I wonder if you boy cotters will stick to your gun in four years when this is the closest thing to a best on best hockey tournament. Do you really think the IIHF will step up and create a real world cup? Keep dreaming on that one.

Then I guess you don't care about the World Juniors either, cause it's not best-on-best.

With his criterion, the top best-on-best is the All Star Game then: two teams with the absolute NHL best, less dilution of talent than the World Cup's many teams.
All these best-on-best folks never seem to understand that best-on-best means nothing compared to a meaningful to the max tournament like the OG.
They all enjoy Bettman's Kool Aid like crazy...

There's already a "real world cup", it's called the Olympic Games.

I will. I'm German. I mean, I'm 100% pro europe and probably one of the few people right now that is in support of a "United States of Europe", but as far as sports are concerned, I'm still German. I don't care for a Team "Rest of Europe" and I don't watch it just because it's hockey. It's in September, and pre-season games are terrible enough. ;)

With NHL participation the Olympics have been for hockey what the World Cup is for soccer.

But without NHL participation the Olympics would be for hockey the same as the Olympics are for soccer.

If NHL really wanna kill hockey in Europe i think this is the way to go:nod:
