The closer we get to this tournament the angrier I am about it. The NHL had a chance to embrace the international hockey community and create an event that would have made everyone happy but pretty much spat in their faces.

Hockey fans have the opportunity to watch top players play competitive games thousands of times a year within league play. What we don't have the opportunity to see very often is best-on-best international hockey. Many of the best tournaments in the world of sports feature teams that have little to no chance of winning but upsets that occur often make for the most entertaining and compelling story lines in those tournaments. I would much, much rather watch the character that a team like Latvia and their fans brings to a tournament than some random, "all-star" team thrown together that represents nothing and which nobody cares about.

As a die hard fan of US hockey I'm furious that the NHL has likely denied me the opportunity to ever see some of these young upcoming stars play with the vets I've been following for years. I would be thrilled to see Kane, who's in his absolute prime right now, play on a line with exciting young players like Gaudreau and Eichel. It saddens me that this tournament may have been the only opportunity to ever see that happen. The NHL is on the path to completely ruin years of interest and investment I've put into following these players.

What scares me the most in all this is that the days of best-on-best Olympics may very well be over and the NHL, with it's idiotic and disrespectful ideas, may hold all the cards going forward. With what they've chosen to do with this tournament that may very well mean the end of best-on-best international hockey. If this fear of mine comes to be realized in future years then the NHL has made an enemy of this hockey fan for good.

If I believed there were some legitimate way to undermine this tournament I would back it actively and completely. Unfortunately I can't see a scenario where people in the greater Toronto area don't pack the stadiums and buy merchandise. I'll just have to hope that somehow those responsible for making decisions going forward listen to the complaints and realize that they can still make their money and grow the game without resorting to gimmicks and ignoring the international hockey community's input. It didn't need to be this way and doesn't need to be going forward.

I agree with you 100%. My advice to you, continue to criticize it right up until puck drop, and at every chance you get. Once the tournament begins, you should completely ignore the whole gong show and settle in for a September of Baseball, pennant races and BBQs.

That's my plan anyway.

Correct on all counts. At least one of the primary decision makers with regard to this tournament has moved on from the NHL.

I feel the same way Cagney. I'll watch it but what a complete disaster. I truly hope that this never happens again.

I think we have to phrase this properly. This is not an international event.

It's a venture by an American company to increase profits and awareness to their company in North America to gain more followers through false promotion by labeling this a World event when no, it's not even close.

It's purely business. Nothing more. It has no international significance such as the IIHF World Championship and the Olympics. It does not benefit the game of Ice Hockey in any way across the World. It's not developing the game, it's not achieving any new audiences on a Global scale and apart from promotion in Toronto they have ignored all the 8-10 main Hockey countries by having no promotion and no mention, hence the reason no one knows about it in most places in the Hockey World, let alone the sporting World.

What is so hard to understand. This will event will have no international audience.

The NHL isn't even catering to their American audience considering all games will be played in Toronto.

Yeah because it's a guaranteed money maker in tickets in Toronto.

Of course it will sell in TO.There are hundreds of thousands of hockey players and ex hockey players within 100 Miles of the ACC.Where better to have a tourny if you want to make money.

This is exactly why I love international hockey, because you can never expect these things and is awesome to watch. This is also why March Madness is so popular even though it features many universities that most people have never heard of.

Well it's official, KHL won't stop for the tournament, can't blame them, it's not an International tournament, so why stop if it has no meaning to people around the World.

Where did you get this? This has been official for a little less than a year now I'm pretty sure they're not sending out statements every month to say the same thing...is there an update or did you just find out?

It's been clear from the start that the KHL wouldn't stop their season. The question is whether or not they will release players for the NHL invitational.

Team Finland loses half of the top6 D.

That sucks. This means only Sweden and maybe Canada will be at full strength. And the NHL is promoting this as a best-on-best?

Canada is not at full strength. Unless someone wants to post a recent story, I don't think the position of the KHL (individual players may be released) has changed.

If it was on regular TV I would watch it. I have pretty basic cable and there is almost no hockey. Only NHL on NBC and Stanley up finals. I have to stream anything I watch and it can be a pain.

Our top-4 D has already been picked, and the fifth will be Jokipakka. So we will only lose 1/6 of the top-6 D if Lepistö's KHL club won't release him. That's nowhere near losing "half".

In fact, the Russians and the Czechs would be in far deeper doo-dah, but I think they'll work around that. Especially the Russians will probably lean heavily on select clubs.

It's still a gimmick tourney though.

This is a joke tournament, might as well go with the young talents and see how it carries out.
This is not a bad position to have, given how the end result really matters little, and now even less. The payoff would be seen in 2018 - granted the NHL decides to go.

Feel no excitement for it whatsoever. Forced, fake. This EU & NA team is just ridiculous.

World cup will be like hot girl offering sex for married man. Man knows it is wrong, he would regret, but in the other hand he wants to watch so much hockey at that moment, some men might slip from the right path.

Finland or others will not lose anything because of that. KHL president has said they wont block players from leaving for the tournament, they just will not stop the regullar season because of this tournament. Some players from scratches / farms will get ice time, nothing dramatic.

 This is very good description. I won't boycott it this time, although those who's ideas were Team Europe and NA U23 should be kicked out from sports forever, but if in 2020. they f****d it up again with this artifical teams, no way I am gonna watch a second.

Well... you can't really boycott something you don't care about.
