Yeah, they lose looking gooood!
I'm guessing I wasn't the only hockey fan praying they would go to the Swedish girls' dressing room to witness the celebration!
Young, sweaty, scantily-clad Swedish girls hugging and kissing with joy.
Was I wrong to pray for that?
:D

an article Jazz posted in another thread on this board says Canada has about 65000, and Sweden 2500-3000.

Not exactly a 500-1 ratio.

I'm pretty sure Kim didn't play in net against the Canadians in the last game.
And I think Canada only beat them 4-0 in warm up to the Olympics in Calgary.

I think I heard 2-0 in one warm up game.

What? It's funny because it's true? :dunno:

The entire "women's hockey thread" isn't as long as this one is. Suddenly there is a HUGE interest in women's hockey? Don't think so.

its cus sweden was the underdog :sarcasm:

All kidding aside, this is a seminal moment in women's hockey.
Sweden has shown the rest of the world that the US/Canada powerhouses CAN be beat. It hurts the average American women's hockey fan, but it will ultimately be good for the game.
And it will be a while before the American women underestimate an opponent, methinks.

theres a lot of interest, there was a lot of negative articles written about USA hockey already in these olympics because of their poor performance..

I cant wait to hear more USA hockey reaction, seems they spent more time whining and getting their pictures taken here than they did playing hockey

Great post. It is no longer a 2 team tournament.

This game has changed my whole outlook on women's hockey, I am actually excitied to watch teh Gold Medal game even if by some freak of nature Canada loses to Finland.

A couple of 3-1 wis in the run up to the Games.

By the way, to the mod who said something about being glad the US lost because they lost to a high school team, I noticed that Canada had a number of losses to AAA Midget teams, including some blowout losses.

Congratulations to Sweden.

Except for the last shoot-out goal. Arguably it was insurance, but I think they were just running up the shoot-out score.

U.S. outplayed Canada in last year's World Championship final. Best thing that has happened to Canada since the 2002 Olympics was losing the gold medal game to the U.S. last year, and being outplayed in the process. They've come back with renewed vigour and hunger this year.

U.S. could have easily beaten Canada several times at the Worlds. Canada had big comebacks in a couple gold medal games, and got better goaltending in a couple others. Even though the U.S. had years where they were the better team, and would beat Canada in the round-robin/pre-tournament games, Canada was generally best when it counted: the gold medal game. (Exception being the 1998 Olympics).

For whatever reason, Canada has looked stronger throughout this year's Olympics. Maybe the U.S. took the foot off the throttle in their first two games, but they were down 3-2 to Finland a couple days ago. They just haven't looked as sharp this week.
Good, fair post. But don't try to introduce too many actual facts. It interrupts his hate-on for Team USA.

Wow, for some reason I thought that elite women's hockey teams could do better vs. mens teams.

Let me join the crowd here: This game justified women's hockey as an olympic sport.

Go Sweden! :handclap:

Now, get the gold.

That's because up until this point you could use the same "women's hockey thread" for all 11 World Championships and olympics (all with Canada/US finals.. where the two teams went a combined 85-0-1).

You don't think the first victory over one of those two teams merits a long thread?

I heard that Kim Martin has signed to play college hockey in the US for the next 3 years. Good for her!

Very good game for Sweden.

Hard forechecking from the 2nd period and on made the day of the USA defensemen a lot harder. Especially considering the poor coaching of this usa team, they were the faster skaters and better passers but when Sweden made more pressure, usa team, for some reason, have keep the same strategy and try numerous times the long pass.

USA team was better in the offensive zone and defensive zone but was ultimatly beaten because of Coaching and more important than all: Goaltending... very good game for Martin!!!

But if Usa adjust to this pressure by regrouping and making small passes, this game is their.

Congrats to Sweden.

With that said, i'm for one not sure if i'm that happy for Women hockey.

One on side, all that was said previously is true. First time we got something different than Usa-Canada, big upset and all.

On the other side, we are going to missed (and all people who were going to watch and will watch) the only 1 game that is truely on another level than the rest of women hockey. Usa-Canada final usually is a pretty decent level of hockey game that is also good for the sport.

Ultimatly, if Sweden keeps the game close, it will be ok and the positives will outweight the negatives easily. But if Canada beats them 8-1 (keeps in mind Canada ALWAYS plays his best games when it counts), i'm not so sure a semi Sweden-Finland and a final Usa-Canada, both been close and hard-fought games wouldnt have been better.
____________

I guess we will never know unless Finland beats Canada also but i think this is not a true possibility. Usa did looks to be underperforming here and there in this tournament, Canada did not. In fact, they looks much stronger than usual with new 20 years old players who are already at the top of this team...
____________

It's half way between been a 1 step in the right direction with the victory and been simply a mistake like Beralus/Sweden men results... Hope it's more of the first one.

Again nice win Sweden.

Didn't Finland play Canada really tight in the last Olympics? I remember the semi final being in doubt until the third period.

As for this morning's game, what a performance for Sweden. I'd rather see this upset, than have to see USA-Canada again. I think this is a far greater story than if one of Canada or the States were to win against the other.

Nah I'd rather see that USA-CAN match this year too, for the bronze game though :D

Finland always plays every team tight, no matter what opponent or what game, Finland brings it every shift, every game. :handclap:

If I were Finnish, the Finnish hockey players would make me proud every time they play, I have a ton of respect for Finland. :yo:

That's true, I guess we are all too quick in writing off Finland, especially after what happened today.

It would be absolutely astonishing if Finland were to win, and I suggest it would be good for women's hockey if it were to happen. Perhaps we could have 2 hockey miracles in one daY? :)

The Canadian women play those AAA midgets with the intent to challenge themselves. They expect to lose most of them. But the only way to improve yourself is to continually challenge. There's no point in playing games that will not test your skill and force improvement. BTW, have you seen a Canadian AAA midget team play? 15-17 year old boys/men at the AAA level are something for even the best women to reckon with.

For sure my second favourite team (granparents moved to Canada from Finland) and they always provide a challenge. Looking forward to a great game :handclap:
