Post-Game Talk: Woll Wills Leafs over Oilers | Leafs Win 4-3

This is the part that irritates me the most. There has to be some common sense. This is what ended up getting the "toe in the crease" rule scrapped, because goals were being called back where a hair of a player's skate blade was in the crease but had no impact on a goal.
Offside is offside unfortunately. They can’t make it a judgement call whether it impacted the play or not, that just opens up a huge can of worms. Only thing they can do is eliminate the challenge. It does suck and kills the momentum

I see at least a couple of offsides each game that I think would have been called even a few years ago. I suspect there is a mandate to not call the really close ones. Let the play continue, and in most cases the puck comes back out or the play stops anyway. It speeds up the game with fewer stoppages and a very low number result in a goal being called back.

As per the current rules, it was the correct call. Question is whether it is time to change the rule.

They removed the 2 line offside pass. I suggest getting rid of offside all together. Use to centre line instead. No player should be allowed to be in the offensive zone while the puck is in your zone. What you do not want is a player to lurk around the opposition blueline waiting for a stretch pass from their end.

I'd also allow teams to ice the puck but after 5 icings, they get a penalty. The games needs fewer stoppages and more goals.

The trapezoid also needs to go. Let goalies play the puck. Why penalize a goalie who can play the puck better than any other goalies? Brodeur has retired. Get rid of the trapezoid.
Could just eliminate offsides and icings altogether.

And anyone who plays the puck outside the crease is treated equally.

Much fewer face-offs then.

I think the new update has major issues. It has somehow renamed the Edmonton board "Toronto Maple Leafs".

No wonder so many people here wanted that goal to count.
Oh, I bet the Edmonton and main board are having a field day with this... everyone loves to claim leafs favouritism amongst the league

Imagine how many "illegal" goals were scored in the NHL before the league used video technology for offside.
Imagine how many more goals would be scored if the size of the goalies equipment were the same as the the equipment used in the 1960s?

Imagine how many more goals would be scored if the net sizes were increased to take into the body size increase of goalies, and their now use of oversized equipment?

Offside IS NOT interpretive, it's offside or it's not. When a goal is scored, the team that was scored on, has the right to know if the play that entered their d-zone was NOT against the rules for off sides.

Too many other hockey NHL rules are enforced differently from ref to ref, at least offside can be enforced evenly across the board after a goal. Our Leafs could have lost that game in regulation had the goal been deemed good and the Oilers were awarded a power play.

There is no issue with the offside rule or the video replay challenge leading to a reversal on the ice.

From an emotional POV it felt like the Leafs were in full on choke mode and didn't deserve to hold on for the win. Edmonton was on cheat codes and were in process of coming all the way back, so I think people complaining about the offsides have the two mixed up. The feeling of injustice and whatever.

I wonder if there is more icings now in Berube system and the D Tre acquired compared to Keefer system and the D he had.

Was it Justin Holl or Mark Giordano who was icing the puck so much that commenters were noticing and keeping track 2-3 years ago?

Agreed, the ability to challenge an offside is the problem and many would like to see it removed.
I would like to see the goalie interference challenge done away with also.

Get a real 3rd. center and then make it happen.
Our Leafs have a 3rd line centre. His name is Tavares. To be a real SC contender, our Leafs need a real solid 2nd line centre.

Tavares is not good enough any more to be a solid 2nd line centre on a SC winning team. Prove me wrong John, prove me wrong.

JMHO.

His shtick is as bad as Rielly defending a 2 on 1.
I can appreciate optimism but it gets to the point where it's like a coachescorners account.

Coachescorner had some great satirical shit though. Whoever that was rolled with it and laid into it on purpose and it was funny sometimes.

Anyway to each their own.

The 2-1 Mo stuff though... lol... it's true. I'm a defender of Mo... but he's been pretty bad for a while. Seems anyone who plays with McCabe is better though... him and Tanev... thank God we have those 2 guys.

I hope its just a tough year for Mo because I think he still has enough speed and skill to be a lot better than he has been.

Hopefully playoff Mo will be there. He's usually pretty good then.

It's going to be a tough race for playoffs now though too. Atlantic doesn't look so bad now. Really competitive the last couple months.

Sorry long winded message.

Honestly, I think it will depends on Vegas. If both teams are healthy, it is going to be a battle.
I do think the team coming out of the Pacific will be in the Cup Finals as Central is going to be a bloodbath.
If the Oilers get good goaltending they’ll be in the Cup Final but that’s a big if.

Its very simple. If no official can tell in real time as the play is happening if a player is offside or not, then it probably means they were close enough to the redline that they were onside. If there's a offside challenge and you replay the video at normal speed and you can't easily see that player being offside, then they're considered onside.

If a player is actually offside then you should be able to easily see it at normal speed just like the officials call players offside many times per game without any video replay required to see if that player is offside or not. Any offside review that requires you to slow down the video to frame by frame to tell if a player is offside or not means they're not offside.
The they shouldn’t be able to use slow motion for any replay call like did the puck go over the goal line, was it kicked in, was there goalie interference, high stick, time left on the clock etc. Just remove replay all together. You can’t selectively pick when they can use slow motion technology to overturn calls.

Leafs have been playing the worst hockey of the season and they still beat the loser oilers. It should shut that annoying fan base up for a little bit.

Just imagine if Tavares and Knies were not just coming back from injury and the team had Stolarz in net. The leafs would smash them.

The leafs played 1 good period, And that was enough to beat the Oilers at their very best.
You think they’re beating the Oilers in a seven game series playing that way ? Both Stolarz and Woll would get injured facing 40+ shots a night and the Oilers goaltending wouldn’t be that bad every night.

That was criminal, he was exactly what that team needed in the worst way, he gets put in their lap and they pass on it.
Not a Dubas / Shanny fan but was that after he kneed JT in the head in Game 1 against the Habs because there were a lot of bitter feelings on the Leafs thinking Perry could’ve done more to avoid seriously injuring him.

OK so if we want to get offside calls right, then why aren't we doing this ALL THE TIME then? There are numerous plays similar to this in every game where a player looks like they could be either onside/offside and yet the officials say its close enough and allows the play to continue. If we're going to be such sticklers and want to get offside calls right all the time, then why aren't we video reviewing every close offside/onside call to make sure we get it right 100% of the time? Why do we only care about whether a player is offside or not when its this close only when a goal a scored and not every other time this happens? Why pick and choose instead of enforcing this rule for EVERY close offside/onside play and take it to the video room to make sure?

This just shows how little everyone actually cares about following the offside rule to the letter if they only ever care about an offside when it results in a goal and on every other situation that's exactly the same where a player is close enough to the line, then that's good enough to continue the play without having to go to a video review to make sure that player is onside.
It’s immaterial when a goal isn’t scored and Coaches aren’t going to waste their challenge unless it involves a goal.

Oh, I bet the Edmonton and main board are having a field day with this... everyone loves to claim leafs favouritism amongst the league
f*** Edmonton. Most arrogant fans in the league and that includes Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

They are probably going to win the Cup this year but i hope they never win another one ever again.

Yesterday in general was a cigarette worthy day

Go leafs and go Canada

Our hockey team kinda stinks but thank God we have elite goaltending
Lol yeah forsure.

I think the Leafs are better than they've been. They've dealt with injuries alot this year. They need to be more consistent though. Hopefully this road trip will be a good one to get back on track before the break.

We need a trade though. 3 C obvious need at the minimum.

When Leafs passed on Perry, he signed in Montreal. The knee to Tavares' head does not happen if the two clowns made the no brainer decision.
