Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll’s injury revelation prior to Wednesday’s season opener was certainly unexpected, and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on the latest 32 Thoughts The Podcast about the situation. Friedman stated that he doesn’t get the sense there is a loss in trust but he does know they were hoping not to have to placed him on injured reserve this early in the season.

“Some of the talk in Toronto was ‘How are these guys going to trust them? They’re going to lose faith, how can they believe in them?'” Friedman said. “When things like that get said, what I wonder about is, is it opinion or is someone telling people this? Opinions are fine, everybody’s entitled to them. But I think there’s a difference between that’s what people are saying and that’s what is being told them. Right now I can’t tell, to be perfectly honest, if there’s any team-wide disappointment at it, but they were definitely hoping that it wouldn’t be the case right now and they have no choice but to bubble wrap him.”

In terms of how the Woll suffered his most recent injury, Friedman reported that he got the sense from Leafs reporters that Woll seemed off for a few days leading up to Wednesday.
There were reportedly whispers on Tuesday night, per Friedman, that Woll was not going to play in the season opener and that Anthony Stolarz would get the nod while Dennis Hildeby would be joining the team, all three of which ended up being accurate.

Stolarz played well despite losing 1-0 to the Montreal Canadiens while Hildeby impressed in his NHL debut with a 4-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. As for Woll, Friedman said the sense he got is the injury is not serious but the Leafs may alter his workload on non-game days moving forward.

“In this day and age, I think you’re seeing a lot of more teams starting to say that ‘You can’t do this anymore, that there has to be more rest,'” he said. “For Woll, I think they’re going to say ‘No more practicing as much as you do.’ Each team gets four days off a month, which is CBA-mandated, but I wonder if you’re gonna see it even more. I do believe that that’s one of the things they’re discussing.”

that there has to be more rest,
that sounds good, but i'll say "that's not his problem"

His problem is his "save the puck at all costs, all the time".

He made a heart wrenching splits save in the first period of a preseason game.

He has to change HIS approach.

And that is hard to do.

He made a save that goalies regularly make but he is either made of glass or very soft in the will department.
We can’t have a goalie that isn’t wired to “save the puck at all cost, all the time”

It just might be time to trade Woll for the best offer that Treliving can find.

This is now a habitual thing with Woll.

Get what you can for him in a trade and move on.

JMHO.

Who would trade for this guy atm lmao. He played a total of 90 mins in the preseason and now its unknown when he will be back. 3.6m cap hit the next 3 years after this season.

I was a big fan and believer in woll last season, but after his high ankle sprain on a simple shot, hurting himself in game 6, and now this, the dude seems cooked and will likely be a Band-Aid his entire career. Dude just is not reliable at all.

I'd say injuries probably impact goalies the most out of all positions as well.

Although Berube noted that Woll has not stepped on the ice since getting diagnosed with his ailment, things are progressing in the right direction.
“That’s a good question. He’s getting better,” Berube said Saturday morning. “It’s still day-to-day right now, but, I don’t really have an answer.”
Woll was placed on IR on Wednesday due to lower-body tightness and that resulted in him being unavailable for the first three games of the regular season. This resulted in Dennis Hildeby getting called up while Anthony Stolarz got the start for the regular season opener that was projected to be given to Woll before his injury diagnosis.
Both Stolarz and Hildeby played well in their respective games which should give the Leafs confidence to grant Woll as much time as required to recover from his ailments. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on the latest 32 Thoughts The Podcast episode that Toronto will look into adjusting Woll’s workload on non-game days once he is cleared to return.

“In this day and age, I think you’re seeing a lot of more teams starting to say that ‘You can’t do this anymore, that there has to be more rest,’” he said. “For Woll, I think they’re going to say ‘No more practicing as much as you do.’ Each team gets four days off a month, which is CBA-mandated, but I wonder if you’re gonna see it even more. I do believe that that’s one of the things they’re discussing.”

Woll has been dealt with numerous injuries over the past calendar year, including a high ankle sprainthat sidelined him for three months and a back injury in the dying seconds of Game 6 against the Bruins. The Leafs have remained committed to him by signing him to a three-year extension in the offseason, but GM Brad Treliving also made a point to mention that they want to alter Woll’s training regimen to ensure he can stay durable.

He performed well when he was healthy, coming off a season where he posted a record of 12-11-1, a .907 save percentage, and a 2.94 GAA. Woll was even better in the playoffs where he recorded two wins along with a .964 SV% and 0.86 GAA before suffering the aforementioned injury.

Berube isn't shaping out to provide useful information about injuries.

He called Woll's injury "minor" but it was more than that. Now he's calling the injury "day to day" (like another underestimation as he hasn't even been on the ide).

Q: How are things in the Middle East?
Berube: "a wee skirmish there"

Q: How demented are Biden and Trump?
Berube: "everyone forgets things from time to time"

At this point, I think we need to accept that Woll will most likely not become a reliable number one goaltender because of his durability.

As usual, the media is there to protect the Leafs and to try and shape the narrative.

Maybe that's how the click-based media does things:

(1) hot take: Kypreos: Woll needs to remedy the lack of trust in his health
(2) media responds to the hot take.
(rinse and repeat).
