Keefe on if this type of game was a one-off?"Well, it has happened a lot for our group over the years. And I'm talking about the experienced people. And that came back tonight. And I thought the game invited it. It's 25 shots, everybody's feeling great, you got lots of puck touches, you think it's going to happen again, and you're going to stay with it. I don't know if anybody's ever got 75 shots in a game before. I don't think it happens. Usually things adjust and the opposition pushes back. The game kind of tidies up a little bit. But I just thought we got incredibly sloppy, careless, and that's disappointing. But to your point, that hasn't been us. We haven't played that way for quite some time. So I thought our guys got a little too excited, a little too carried away. And we'll tighten that back up real quick."

I don't agree with Keefe here.... we've been sloppy, careless so many times this year. Even games we win.

We were good offensively, crap everywhere else. Careless with the puck, leading to breakaways and odd man rushes, careless in the D zone... just a terrible game, except for offensive play.

I said that back in January and maybe in December too. The structure isn't there, the discipline isn't there... he just can't get them to buy in to playing a responsible game on a regular basis.

I don't even know if it's Keefe, or if the core group just will never buy in...

But, I thought we needed a coaching change long ago... He's either lost the room, or these guys aren't coachable... but there should have been changes much earlier this season to at least just which it is. So often Keefe has looked like quitting on the players... he's frustrated too, he's frustrated that no matter what he says, there isn't buy in... I'm looking forward to what he has to say in the post game media video.

Well, imagine they had a real team identity and they came out to play exactly the same vs NJ as they did with Edmonton. Play on their toes, defensively stout and physically targeting your Hughes, Bratt and Meier. Maybe not exactly the same but show them you mean business and do all the stuff you’re saving for Boston and Florida. Like play the series game and don’t go looking for a causal shinny game.

For the most part, the same lineup hammered the Oilers a few nights ago. I take about as much meaning from that game as I do from this one.

One thing I would say, however, is that this team should not be resting players through these final games. Once the injured guys come back, ice your playoff lineup for the remainder of the regular season and don't sit anyone for "load management". You can't build a rhythm by leaving out parts of the band.

The panel talking about the Leafs mess defensively.

weren't the defensive pairing today the first time....

McCabe Liljegren
Brodie Boosh
Benoit Timmins

??? Don't think they've played together even once before tonight. That said, our forwards need to be better IMO in the d-zone and tracking the puck

He said "quite some time" not "this year", and he's right.

Anyone know why Edmundson wasn't playing? I saw Rielly wasn't gonna play but I never saw anything about him. I'm assuming some kind of minor injury because he's been fantastic the last few games

Nothing game. Woll was not even close to good.
Clearly this was a mental night off for the team.
Somewhat concerning they broke down defensively like they did so often.
Generated a ton of offence. Allen had a great game to give his team a chance, which they took advantage of.

Disappointing result, but not overly concerned.

Keefe's reaction to Matthews and Nylander also voicing their displeasure in their game tonight: "They got to be the example. John Tavares has been the example for us. He's been outstanding for us for a long period of time. He himself got carried away tonight. That's our captain. So if that's going to happen, well, like the rest of our bench is now, we're just making it up as we go. When you do that, you open the door for the opposition to have a good night. And they did that. And I thought the last goal at the end of the third period there, that's indicative of our second and third periods."

He got the sloppy part right but gives you a little peek at how this team thinks about high volume shooting as a product of how they measure process. A team getting excited by a high volume of shots then starting to grip the stick is the Montreal meltdown all over again.

Unserious team and unable to diagnose their own problems.

I think the reality is that this doesn't happen much in the new NHL. Take Boston: a couple of weeks ago they got hammered by the Islanders, not long after beating the Leafs twice. Even the best teams in the league don't seem to be all that consistent anymore.

I’m stunned anyone can watch our lazy play in our end and conclude we played well? Sure we had a boatload of chances, they were a tire fire in their end, but the mental lapses were just awful. Woll was bad, that doesn’t excuse sad hockey.

There’s zero attention to detail out there. That falls on the players. I would like to see Keefe make better adjustments though. Help the team out.

I guess I am surprised at myself that I am not too pissed about the game tonight

I am kinda ticked about forwards not playing structured D in our own zone; and D-men kind of getting to know their new partner and tendencies was aight....

Leafs were missing Rielly, Big Eddy, Jankrok, Marner, Samsonov so they may be fine in the playoffs. TBD though....

or may be I am just waiting for the offseason LMAO :biglaugh:

but I don't think they will be this bad in the playoffs regardless of who they play.

Standings have nothing to do with with ramping up for the playoffs. A competitive team shouldn't go into a playoff season just half assing it like they don't even like the sport.
The leafs are like spoiled pretty boy rich kids born and raised in privilege, who are taking life for granted. They are so casual in their approach to play games. They exclusively rely on their talent to win. They are average at best on defense with no Norris caliber blueliner. Last time the Leafs had a experienced, reliable, durable and clutch goaltender was Eddie belfour for two seasons back in the early 2000s, just before MySpace/Facebook/YouTube became ubiquitous worldwide. They don’t see the value of hard work and commitment to a game plan or system. Their team defense from game to game is inconsistent.

they excel best in run and gun, low intensity, low physical games with open space for them to manœuver offensively and make fancy high skilled plays . Imagine if they played with high end speed, poise, clutchiness, determination, controlled aggression, energy, tenacity and purpose like Colorado, Florida and Tampa bay. The core cashed in early with life changing money and don’t feel to do more than necessary, they are going through the motions and coasting. I find Tavares lack of fire and intensity as a player off putting as well.

Keefe should have been fired a long time ago. He doesn’t prepare the team to win. The leafs are the wealthiest, most influential and most powerful franchise in the nhl and they can’t even hire a decent head coach?

Shows how much of a leader Edmundson is.

Yeah but the Leafs slip more than others. It partially explains why they’re in this unusual purgatory of being better than Wild Card teams but always falling behind the division leaders.

They simply throw away their shot at the division title every year with poor efforts vs poor teams.

I'm not particularly bothered by this game, over any other. What we saw tonight, is something that we've seen over, and over throughout the years. Even in games where we are winning big... there is always that feeling, that we are going to become undisciplined, stop trying, or play sloppy D and lose the lead. I'm passionate about the Leafs, but at the end of the day this is entertainment, and if they lose early in the playoffs, I'll be outside enjoying the weather.

But even with all those players you've listed back, there are times we play like this... and if they ever want any success in the playoffs, you just can't take nights off. Maybe they'll surprise us in the playoffs... but probably not.

Same, to be upset you’d have to be surprised and we’ve seen this ‘taking nights off’. too many times before.

They’ll be better in the next one and on it goes.
