GDT: [WJC] Latvia vs. Canada, 6pm EST 10/8/22

5-2 win.

Really good game by the Latvians - Canadian fans are going to complain but they overall played a good game and should be proud by their efforts. Latvia plays a structured game and their goalie was excellent throughout the game.

Latvia is a dangerous team that should not be taken lightly. They’re well coached and do a fantastic job taking away high danger scoring opportunities so you have to earn them if you want them. They remind me of the early 2010’s Swiss teams.

Canada’s third line had a good game. Greig - Dufour - Ostapchuk. Greig was all over the ice and although he took a couple penalty's was very impressive and took away a well deserved player of the game. Keep this line together!

Bedard and McTavish work well with each other and both played good games. I didn’t like Roy on their line however, he plays the game too passive and didn’t seem to have chemistry with the big dogs. i’d like to see either Kent Johnson on that line as a guy that can consistently get the puck to those two with McTavish playing more of a power, net crashing role, or one of Cuylle/Foerster on the top line to play that role for that line.

A big problem with the defence is the amount of lefties on the roster. Too often would a lefty on the right side recieve the puck on their backhand at The blue line and not have enough time to make a play that makes a lot of sense, so they would just dump it back down to the corner they just received the play from and more often than not it would be a wasted opportunit. I didn’t think it’d be as big of a deal as it was but it was real noticeable tonight.

Bad game for Cossa, he was chasing the game all night. Seemed really unsure of himself all night and never found his game. His rebound control was terrible all night, he was a trampoline and it caused a lot of panic in front of the net. I would have him as the #3 for the tournament.

The Stutzle pick was an absolute no brainer after LA blew it picking Byfield, but if Sanderson pans out then that is good scouting

Couple things to unpack here, and hopefully I don’t derail the thread too bad.

1. Way, way, waaay too early to consider LA blowing it by selecting Byfield. If somehow even if Stützle’s career is better, Byfield could still be a great pick.

2. Yes, it was always between Stü and Byfield for 2/3 and we were going to be left with the remainder, however it is no guarantee we are going to hit on Stü. My point is, if with #3, #5 and #28 we get nhl players, we still beat the odds comfortably.

3. Everyone, Sens fans included, need to have very tempered expectations for Sanderson. Much like the Byfield situation, I really don’t care if Drysdale becomes a top 3 defensemen in the league, as long as Sanderson is able to comfortably play top four minutes.

4. If anyone should be impressed with scouting at the top of the draft, it should be with the Raymond selection. That is a great value pick IMO for a player that has a strong bid to amass the most points in that class.

Very impressive game by Latvia, but Canada didn't do itself any favors. Way too many sloppy plays and turnovers, even bizarre plays where they were almost scoring on their own net like 3 times. If they play like this I don't see them beating the likes of team USA.

Great observations of the game and both teams.

After reading all those cryings and whinings around facebook
for Canadian fans after IIHF worlds gold medal game small / minor trolling
is needed and very welcome in here. Canadians should finally take brains out of their asses and realize
that always when you put your stick opposite players skates / legs IT IS 9 / 10 times 2min minor penalty
no matter what rulebook referees are using.

Latvia usually plays Canada pretty tough.

They’re a bit like the Swiss that way.

This Latvia age group was really competitive at the u18s a couple years ago, Canada only beat them 3-1 and they played a few other teams close. This isnt your typical Latvian team either.

Hard to get a read on some guys from one game but Bedard is an absolute stud. Sure he could move it a bit more but with a shot like that, shoot it, nothing wrong with that.

Zellwegger Sebrango top pair really complimented each other well. Zellwegger is a bit of gambler (in a good way) and you can tell Sebrango has played a solid role in pro hockey with how rock solid he is. He absolutely killed a guy on the PK in the corner at one point.

Greig looked really good as player of the game but in classic Greig style he needs to stay out of the box. There was a streak there where Canada took like 4 or 5 straight penalties and itll kill them against better teams.

I actually didnt love McTavish. He didnt do anything to make me hate him or anything like that I just thought he would stand out more in a game against Latvia.

Cossa was solid. 7 shots going into the third ended up with 20 something. He coulda had that 2nd goal but it wasnt a softie or anything, stopped 3 or 4 breakaways including a short handed one at a key time

Really, really solid post. Thank you for summing this up, GS.

Couple things I wanted to touch on:

-Really agree with the top-line observation. Roy is not the guy who is going to really mesh well with the playstyles of Bedard and McTavish, IMO. I found him watching the play develop way too much in this game and like you said, that line will benefit from a much more direct and heavy player who is willing to crash to the dirty areas to balance it out. Might even suggest Othmann should get a look there tomorrow. Really believe, as I stated before, no reason why he should not be suiting up for this group.

-I agree with your observation of the third line. Greig, outside of some pretty blah penalties, looked very, very solid today. My favourite play of the game was that back-check where he really sold out to make a play on the defensive end to turn it up and create offense. That's what it's all about. Keep that line together and mix-match as needed around it with the other guys to balance things out.

-Zellweger really stood out today on defense. Looked really solid driving the play and making things happen when he gets his skates moving. On the other hand, I thought Lambos was extremely poor in this one. Too much puck watching and some really careless plays defending. He does this little turn and retrieve move which I've seen a lot watching Winnipeg Ice games and it tends to get him in trouble.

-Garand should be the guy the rest of the way. Not exactly a convincing showing from Cossa, but it is what it is.

Onwards and upwards to Slovakia tomorrow.

It's because the team didn't look like an unstoppable juggernaut and it wasn't a blow out that some people are thinking they will be straight trash the rest of the tournament. lol. As the tourney gets deeper and the teams and games get tougher we will see how it all comes together.

Seeley was really good, he was terrific in the two games at Christmas too. Get this guy on the ice more! Thought Cossa really struggled, he didnt track the puck well which compounded into poor rebound control. It was an adventure when he handled it. Hope this is his last game of the tournament or Canada is in trouble.

Third line was really good, get Dufour on the second PP love his game. A true power forward, love his hustle and willingness to play the body. The whole line was good. Ostapchuk plays hard and skates well for a big man, very raw player. Grieg was obviously great, gotta be more disciplined.

Think Cuylle should move up to the first line, bang some bodies make room for the other two. If not try Othmann. Roy wasn't assertive, maybe he would be a better fit on another line where he feels like he needs to be the guy. Doesnt seem like Johnson has creative enough linemates maybe he should move up I dunno. But id be mixing and matching the two scoring lines keep Griegs together.

Thought Latvia played well. Compete hard, played with skill, they skate well and play for one another.

Can't wait till the finland vs canada game in this tournament with all the talk you fins are doing in here you better hope you win it lol.
Just an embarrassing display every single thread. They cant help themselves.

Yeah for sure and cows can fly.

Guess what i don't give a damn about these U20 WJC's.
I'm watching all Finland's games just because i don't care jack-shit about some freaking
soccer supercup final which was played in Helsinki or some freaking soap-opera shit
like bold and beautifuls or emmerdale which have runned too long in Finnish national TV network

We are already celebrated 2 gold medals ( Olympics and IIHF worlds ) this year
so i won't lose my night-sleeps if we won't win these U20 WJC's.

He had the most ice time on the team lol what more do you want??
Sorry for acknowledging he played well. Didn't look at the box scores to see the exact amount of ice time of all the players. Appreciate your contribution to the thread.

Ive contributed plenty to the thread including that Seely had the most ice time.

Youre welcome
