This thread is pretty incredible, but I'm not getting into some of the hilarious things I've read here.
I just finished watching the game. The officiating...was bad. Finland got the worst of it, admittedly...but on the same note, it wasn't AS bad as it was made out to be in this thread, mostly by Finns and temporary-Finns(read: SOME Canadians)...but it was bad. The Americans DID get a few weak calls on them as well, the difference was the Finnish PP didn't capitalize, or else there'd probably be a similar uproar from American fans. In a way, I'm glad the Finns put a scare into the USA, as I don't think the Americans came to play today and they found out what happens when they bring a C-effort against a strong team's A-game...similar to the scare the Swiss put on Canada(speaking of...for a choice few of you that are notorious for popping into every USA-Intl. thread to denigrate the American team...if this game showed you that the American team is 'nothing special' or 'nothing to fear,' I could but won't say the same thing about the Swiss game. *I* am smarter than that, and recognize a mediocre effort when I see it.) and hopefully they will take a wake-up call from this. Frazee made some great saves, good rebound control...but one-on-one, I'll take Schneider every time. Frazee will be great next year, but he's not there yet. Schneider has got to be in net from here on out.
On to individual performances-
Schremp and Oshie were the USA's best players tonight, goals not withstanding. The Blues made everyone scratch their head when the picked an unknown in TJ Oshie, but he's made me a believer. Schremp is a threat every time he was on the ice.
E. Johnson didn't play quite the game he did last time, but J. Johnson looked much better. It's tough to say how good they could have played if Kyle wasn't going with a short bench(Niskanen played almost none, Mitera didn't play at all). Those guys had to be gassed.
Nice game from Wheeler.
Kessel has obviously got all the skill in the world, speed to burn as well...but I want to see less showing off and less puck-hogging. If he used his speed and passing ability to set up the play, rather than trying to score the highlight reel goal, he would be the most dangerous player in the tournament.
Ryan played BETTER. Somewhere in between's Mr Prescription's scathing hatred and GagneOwnsU's creepy mancrush. He made a horrible turnover on the second Finnish goal, he also made a nice shot on the assist from Kessel. McDonald...I like you, man...but to say he's the second most talented player on the American team is...absurd. He got plenty of icetime tonight, and played a so-so game. He's young yet, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Bourque tried a little too hard tonight. Keep it simple.
I like Porter's game, and I like spreading out the scoring...but I think someone else needs to take his place on that line.
Nice game from the lower lines...Fritsche and Gerbe are good energy grinders.
From the Finns--
Korpikoski is a stud. Lightning fast speed, great hands, nice moves. The Rags get gem.
Tukonen-- Not to add fuel to the already worn-out argument...but this is about the sixth time I've seen he and Korpikoski play...and I'm ready to say that Korps is the better player. Will that change in time? Maybe, but right now...it's not even close. Still played a good game, nice goal on that breakaway.
Seitsonen- the Flames got a STEAL. The Finns' second most dangerous player. Great PP QB, laser shot. Very nice player.
Laakso- A forgotten Nashville Predator prospect, I get to toot our horn here. The only Finnish d-man worth writing home about. Plays a great two way game...nice shot, nice passing...vicious checker. The Canadian commentators had a lot of good stuff to say about him, especially in respect to the Preds' prospect stable.
Ramo- Okay...Finnish fans...lay off the guy. He kept the game from getting ugly and out of hand early. He made a few highlight reel stops, and I don't think much blame could be put on him for the goals scored. From what I saw of the Canadian game, Rask's poor play(well, and a bad effort from the Finns) was the difference between that game and this one. He needs to be the starter from here on out. Sorry Leafs fans, at least you have Pogge.
All in all, it was a frustrating game to watch...but you see Kyle's fire on the bench, this isn't the same complacent team with that dope Sandelin from last year. Walt Kyle was bright red with anger by the end of the game, and I think he's going to rip them apart, which he needs to do. Expect a much different effort against the Swiss.
