"My team lost a player so now it should be cancelled" isn't a very strong argument. As stated above, teams lose players all the time due to NHL service, injuries etc. Its unfortunate, but im sure a ton of fans are looking forward to this tournament with or without a few key players being able to attend. Still a lot of talent that will be there to enjoy.

[MOD] At this point there is no reason to cancel the tournament, particularly due to one player getting covid at just the wrong time. As long as the players show up and play and don't end up coming down with covid, and at this point that seems very plausible, then we should be happy.

Or... New York is holding on to Lafreniere! Cancel the tournament!!!

It's still entirely possible a player from Canada, USA, or any other country could test positive and be held out. Covid makes things weird, and the rules are there for a reason. Unfortunate for the Swedes, but this thread is an overreaction.

Edit: There actually is already another team affected by this. Tobias Ancicka, who was likely to be the German starting goalie.

Every team will likely be impacted by positive tests. Just hopefully they are discovered before the teams get together. Just like everything perfect and what we are used to flew out the window a long time ago. Once everyone gets in the bubble and this gets going it should be a fine tournament. Every year NHL and injury impacts the teams as well. It’s always about which teams can adapt the best anyway, not how many superstars the teams can accumulate.

Sweden already lost one superstar and our 1st center due to covid19. More players are going to test positive. Teams might not even dress a full team when tournament start.

At this point just cancel the tournament. The hockey wont be played on even premises.
In the decade I’ve been on this forum, this is the single most embarrassing thread I’ve seen.

There isn't anybody who is reading this thread who is in any way confident that this tournament will be held. I'm not saying it won't, but everyone who is interested in it will check their news sources often to see if it is still on! Or what teams have decided to drop out. You may call Europeans woozies or whatever you want, but the fact is that if one European country like Sweden decides that it is too risky, or creates some other kind of problem to continue to participate, there will be tremendous pressure within other European countries to justify why are continuing to participate. If Europeans decide to stay home, assuming it is even still feasible to hold the tournament, the relevance and entertainment value of the tournament will plummet like a meteor!

This has absolutely nothing to do with 2 Swedish players testing positive....Like nothing.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your point about the inherent risk to the tourney... but that was NOT the point of the OP. His big idea was that his team’s competitive level has been unfairly handicapped by circumstances, so why bother? If this had been injuries instead of Covid, it would actually not fundamentally change his point.

Yeah, it sucks to have a key component taken out of your lineup. Just ask Canada who just lost the reigning tournament MVP. You still have to play though, and if you have enough fighting spirit... sometimes you win against all odds.

Finland won in 2014 without Kapanen, Barkov and Määttä... and in 2019 without Kotkaniemi, Heiskanen and Vesalainen.... this year we already missing Kakko and Räty so.... sucks that those players got Covid but you gotto make due what you got...

I don’t think Alberta is safe to hold a tournament with the surging cases

Sweden won't even face a tough opponent until the 30th. If they do a good job of quarantining starting today, the OP's concerns should about Sweden shouldn't be an issue.

You're very much correct. Canada won the tournament before while Lemieux, Yzerman, and 17 other players were not available due to the NHL. Russia has won it with Kovalchuk and others not available. USA won without Matthews, Tkachuk, Werenski and more in 2017. It happens, no reason to call things off because a whopping two players are no longer available.

I agree with OP. This tournament is completely unfair and should be cancelled. Not because of some Swedish player though, nobody cares about that. Unfair choices by the New York Rangers and University of Michigan has handicapped Team Canada too much. The tournament is no longer fair, so why bother :sarcasm:

I forgot about Owen Power, who I just now realized was a key lynchpin in our gold medal chances!

If you are not able to ice your team in shape, who is to blame? Hundreds of other guys who worked hard and prepared for the tournament?

I always loved the swedish understanding of fairness. If our top guy goes down - cancel the tournament.

There should be no testing of the players. They are all healthy 18-20 year old 1% athletes. There’s no reason to think they are at any risk. I’d rather not further ruin this tournament for a few health bureaucrats to be satisfied that they ruined what would’ve ended up being the most satisfying hockey experience of many of these kids careers. Undoubtedly more will get added to the list without good reason.

Is this the dumb take thread now or something? Should be no testing of the players. Jesus christ lol
