selected #7 in the import draft by North Bay (OHL)...no clue if the rangers would want him to come over.

Czech league is good, I keep hearing from people who are familiar with all the major professional hockey leagues in Europe that it's comparable to Swedish, Finnish or Swiss league. Definitely a tier below KHL, but it's absurd to say that Chytil should either go to CHL or to Sweden, he's good where he is. Czech Extraliga hasn't produced many NHL players lately but it's more due to the fact that it's been really hard for young players to crack the professional team rosters, so that they've been forced to choose CHL instead. The problem is that professional teams in the Czech Republic don't provide enough space for young players (as the coaches and GMs have no incentives to do so - quite the contrary actually), and at the same time, the U20 junior league is not very good. However, Chytil is in a different and much better position right now.

Sure, this has nothing to with Dustin Brown blowing his knee out and everything to do with bad conditioning in a league in which he played his last game four years ago.

Which is partially why it's an awful developmental league.

Really feel iffy about a big guy coming over to play in the CHL. Too easy to end up relying on size and not the skills that he'll need to make it in the NA pros

Not really a fan of moving a guy down to a junior league after he's been playing against men even if it isn't the highest league in the world

If he went that high, there must be a feeling he's coming over. A club will usually draft guys in the second round of the import draft if it's a long shot.

i think that is a reasonable assumption and would also assume that is being advised by the rangers...definitely curious to see which way he goes

NORTH BAY, Ont. — The North Bay Battalion chose Czech centre Filip Chytil sixth overall in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft on Wednesday. Now it’s a matter of getting him to the Gateway of the North.

“As we’d planned to do, we’ve selected a very talented player and we hope we can get him to come,†said Stan Butler, director of hockey operations and head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Battalion, who takes an all-in approach to securing high-impact players in the Import Draft.

. . .

“I talked to his agent before the draft,†Butler said of Chytil. “I talked to the New York Rangers yesterday. They told me that if he did come, the league he wanted to come to was the Ontario League, which is positive that way.

“It’s going to be very similar to the Thilander thing last year, or the Evgeny Grachev thing numerous years ago, where there’s going to be a recruiting process. The way I look at is, if we’re successful, we get a first-line centre on our hockey team; if we’re not successful, our team’s no different than it was before the draft today.â€

Sounds like there is some mutual interest. We shall see if he makes the decision to come over.

Side topic: Thilander is a guy I'd keep my eye on for next year's draft. Literally no supporting cast in North Bay and he was touted highly in years prior. There may be something there still

Yeah I was a little surprised he was not selected last weekend. Good player, bad team? Looks like it to me, good idea, gotta keep an eye on him for the future.

31. Filip Chytil, C, Zlin (Czech)
DOB: 9/05/99 | Ht: 6' 0.5" | Wt: 178
2016-17 stats: 38 GP | 4 G | 4 A

Chytil was a regular in the top Czech league as a bottom-six forward for his team, despite being one of the youngest players eligible for the 2017 draft. It was hard for me to get a read on Chytil this season. On the one hand, I see a player with a fair amount of talent. On the other, I never saw him take over a game when playing against his age group, and he was often the best player on the second-best line more than being a game-changer. Chytil is an impressive skater who can be tough to check when he's coming through the neutral zone with speed. His stick skills are above average, and I watched him create chances out of nothing. He moves the puck around fine and is creative offensively. Off the puck, I'd like to see more from him in terms of grit and awareness.

His play off the puck is very good for a teenager playing in an elite league. He killed penalties, took big draws. He battles in the corners, picks up trailers etc.

You can watch full Extraliga games on the web. Saw a ton of Zlin this year. Never came across as a 21st overall pick.

I mean, better than Kostin? Tolvanen? No friggin way.

Clark overthinks. They reached for both first rounders. Assess the market and trade the hell down. Neither of these kids will be stars. They'll be (IMO) 45-50 point players. Others teams picking between 8-31 don't want that. They want future stars, or kids with high upside. You're telling me Buffalo was taking Andersson at 8 and Edmonton picking Chytil at 22?????? No friggin way.

Good players. Dumb draft strategy. These kids will make the NHL and somehow justify where they were picked, but I don't think they'll ever be stars.
