I'm sure he has the first-round guy's memorized from his old scouting department.I doubt much will change regarding the draft picks this year; it's still the same staff and outside of the first round I don't think Dubas will micro-manage the picks. That being said, I hope he swings for the fences instead of drafting a "safe" guy with lower upside.
nice find. while like most I like shiny new toys, all wrapped in first round wrapping paper. that write up make me a bit more excited on what might be in the box.Found this on Twitter, he uses a more realistic approach and takes into consideration who might be available for the Pens at #14
Who should the Pittsburgh Penguins select in the 1st round of the NHL Draft? Analysing some prospects that they should be looking at.
With the Pittsburgh Penguins out of the playoffs for the first time in 16 years, we can finally talk about what matters, and that is who the Penguins could draft with their 1st round Selection in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft!lourencocabral.substack.com
Good article, there will be a solid player for us at 14th, yes he won't be playing in the NHL right away but Helle is not putting us over the top either with the way our roster is shapednice find. while like most I like shiny new toys, all wrapped in first round wrapping paper. that write up make me a bit more excited on what might be in the box.
That said, if the trade is there to be made for Helle and the 1st is part of that you do that everytime if it's not an insane-o ask. (or Saros for that matter). Either of those or Gibson if he rebounds can solidify our net for at least 3-5 years and gives us both the means to compete NOW, and a few years from now.
Usual blurb how goal tending is a bit of a crap shoot at times, but it's worth the cap space for Helle/Saros as long as they don't want bob money and will sign long term here. Gibson I'd want some retention on either via chicago or the ducks if we got him for 5M cap hit I'd totally do it.
Or I'd work Granlund in as part of the trade and that's your cap retention there for 2 years.
Can we do take backs? i.e. give Nashville granlund back and we get our 2nd back
That would be hilarous if that could be worked into a deal, i.e. if player X doesn't go above Y metrics we do a takes back...
I heard Dubas is a big fan of the AthleticMock draft on the Athletic today had the Penguins trading Granlund and pick 14 to Detroit for pick 31….
Tbf, no one is a big fan of The Atlantic…I heard Dubas is a big fan of the Athletic
that's a little too far back for me. 20 -24 would be my limit, we could still get a very good player.Mock draft on the Athletic today had the Penguins trading Granlund and pick 14 to Detroit for pick 31….
And then they traded the 31st pick to the Sharks for Barabanov.Mock draft on the Athletic today had the Penguins trading Granlund and pick 14 to Detroit for pick 31….
According to Taylor Haase of DKPS, the Penguins interviewed Matthew Wood, Brayden Yager, Gabe Perreault, David Reinbacher, and Axel Sandin Pellikka at the combine.
Additionally, they took Perreault and Yager to Dinner.
I'd be happy with any of those 5. More names to come as she is dropping great prospects that the Penguins spoke to as the days go on.
Of the names in the mix, I'd rank them:
1. Reinbacher
2. Wood
3. Perreault
4. ASP
5. Yager

Any NHL style comparisons for these players? Wood sounds quite a lot like James Neal from his description.
All aboard the Hellebuyck train baby!!Outside of like, Bedard, Fantilli, and maybe Carlsson, I don't think anybody in this draft is gonna make their mark at the NHL level before Sid's career is up. It's a deep draft, and potentially one of the best since the 2003 draft, but there's only a few guys who will be seeing NHL time in any major capacity any time soon imo.
Just to temper expectations a bit. I don't think you make the pick with the here and now in mind, because odds are whoever they pick isn't gonna be getting a real shot to make the Pens until like 2028. Pick the BPA, regardless of position, and hope it turns out to be the actual BPA. If Michkov falls and there's a genuine shot the team can trade up somehow and snag him, that's a potential franchise pillar. Everybody else; Barlow, Yager, ASP, Wood, etc. are all probably years away.
