The Penguins track record in the first round (outside of the lottery) is piss poor. But something about this draft gives me a Mercer or Boldy hopeful feeling. I’m thinking Barlow fits you the most if wanting a pure goal scorer. And I think he can take a Cole Caufield route. He’ll be so dominant that we will have little to no choice but to call him up. Or keep him up during one of the next two camps.

Outside of like, Bedard, Fantilli, and maybe Carlsson, I don't think anybody in this draft is gonna make their mark at the NHL level before Sid's career is up. It's a deep draft, and potentially one of the best since the 2003 draft, but there's only a few guys who will be seeing NHL time in any major capacity any time soon imo.

Just to temper expectations a bit. I don't think you make the pick with the here and now in mind, because odds are whoever they pick isn't gonna be getting a real shot to make the Pens until like 2028. Pick the BPA, regardless of position, and hope it turns out to be the actual BPA. If Michkov falls and there's a genuine shot the team can trade up somehow and snag him, that's a potential franchise pillar. Everybody else; Barlow, Yager, ASP, Wood, etc. are all probably years away.

Common sense says they are years away from a Pittsburgh uniform and stay in Wilkes-Barre. However with Dubas in control now (who will be more proactive than the last) I can see one of these guys being a Caufield for us. I know it’s hard to believe in our drafts or have faith but this year I see us hitting a homerun.

I doubt much will change regarding the draft picks this year; it's still the same staff and outside of the first round I don't think Dubas will micro-manage the picks. That being said, I hope he swings for the fences instead of drafting a "safe" guy with lower upside.

I'm a Musty fan. Just kinda looks like an NHLer in build and style. Scores goals that you see being scored in the NHL.

I'm sure he has the first-round guy's memorized from his old scouting department.:nod:

Found this on Twitter, he uses a more realistic approach and takes into consideration who might be available for the Pens at #14

nice find. while like most I like shiny new toys, all wrapped in first round wrapping paper. that write up make me a bit more excited on what might be in the box.
That said, if the trade is there to be made for Helle and the 1st is part of that you do that everytime if it's not an insane-o ask. (or Saros for that matter). Either of those or Gibson if he rebounds can solidify our net for at least 3-5 years and gives us both the means to compete NOW, and a few years from now.
Usual blurb how goal tending is a bit of a crap shoot at times, but it's worth the cap space for Helle/Saros as long as they don't want bob money and will sign long term here. Gibson I'd want some retention on either via chicago or the ducks if we got him for 5M cap hit I'd totally do it.
Or I'd work Granlund in as part of the trade and that's your cap retention there for 2 years.

Can we do take backs? i.e. give Nashville granlund back and we get our 2nd back :)
That would be hilarous if that could be worked into a deal, i.e. if player X doesn't go above Y metrics we do a takes back... :D

Good article, there will be a solid player for us at 14th, yes he won't be playing in the NHL right away but Helle is not putting us over the top either with the way our roster is shaped

I wish we got our 2nd back for him, not only the pick but cap reasons also for the next 2 seasons

Mock draft on the Athletic today had the Penguins trading Granlund and pick 14 to Detroit for pick 31….

I mean there’ll be some really good future players there with the #14 pick but do you trust the Pens scouting/development to find them? Lol…I mean we’d be the team passing on Mercer or Pastrnak to take the prospect who never makes it out of the AHL….

The draft's a crapshoot for anybody and everybody. The Pens aren't the only team who passed on Mercer or Pastrnak or Vasilevsky or Kucherov, etc. :laugh:

No, I don't have any faith in this organization's scouting departments, professional or amateur. But I would rather them roll the dice and hopefully end up blind lucking their way into a good/great prospect than to have the very same idiotic scouting department single out a trade target. :laugh:

The 14th overall doesn't hold a ton of value. Odds are you're gonna end up with somebody like Garland who is just another small, 40-50pt middle-6 guy making $5 million. It's not gonna get you a stellar player, imo.

And then they traded the 31st pick to the Sharks for Barabanov.

I don't think I'd much appreciate an effective return of Barabanov for Granlund and the 14th overall. Granlund's value isn't that bad.
(Not saying Barabanov is bad, just that I think a first rounder, even the 31st overall, is a bit high of a pick for him).

According to Taylor Haase of DKPS, the Penguins interviewed Matthew Wood, Brayden Yager, Gabe Perreault, David Reinbacher, and Axel Sandin Pellikka at the combine.

Additionally, they took Perreault and Yager to Dinner.

I'd be happy with any of those 5. More names to come as she is dropping great prospects that the Penguins spoke to as the days go on.

Of the names in the mix, I'd rank them:

1. Reinbacher
2. Wood
3. Perreault
4. ASP
5. Yager

Any NHL style comparisons for these players? Wood sounds quite a lot like James Neal from his description.

Reinbacher = Seider, Ekholm
Wood = Robertson
Perreault = Keller
ASP = Sandin, Girard
Yager = Reilly Smith

All aboard the Hellebuyck train baby!!

I'm surprised Barlow isn't in the mix, I wouldn't mind him either from what I've read up on him. Regardless, very excited about getting one of the following players in 2 weeks
