Can not wait until next season when we are play Chad Ruhwedel over Ty Smith and it’s all Ty Smith’s fault.

At this point I don't even have the energy to dole out "told you sos" when this team has the exact same problems next year even after whatever roster shuffle the next patsy comes in here and does.

Oh who am I kidding I'll be insufferable about it.

I mean.. nobody will defend him next year right?

Or will it all still be Hextall’s fault?

Maybe the local media will turn on the core.

*halfway through next season*

"I just don't get it guys... they went out and got a shiny new expensive goaltender and that big bad third line center we've whined about for over a decade and they still can't find any consistency! Will mysteries never cease?!?"

I mean.. nobody will defend him next year right?

Ohhhhh you sweet summer child.

This is Pittsburgh. A large contingent will shill for this coach until the day he's in the unemployment line.

Plus a non-zero amount have already started blaming the core. Again. For like the fourth or fifth time in this era.

I wonder if things actually play out like I half-jokingly said a year ago where the team refuses to believe Sullivan has any part in the steady decline over the past half-decade, until they're just languishing at the bottom of the standings, to which they just shrug and say "roster's so f***ed not even Sullivan can make due" and keep him around anyway.

-edit- Either way; keep the pick because it's not valuable enough to land anybody who is gonna make a difference, namely Saros or Hellebuyck. I don't trust this dogshit scouting dept to find a worthwhile player in the draft, but I trust them even less to find a worthwhile player via trade. At least with the draft there's always dumb luck.

I personally would put the Expansion Draft as #1. Then goaltending, then Carter 2 year Extension, then bottom 6, then Granlund.
I think the expansion draft is much easier to look at in hindsight. Carter played pretty damn well there for us during all the injuries and kept this team competitive as the 2C.

I hated having the DeSmith as our backup more than most. Out of the names out there that were available I would have taken a stab at Georgiev or Lindgren. Outside of that, there are some pretty ridiculous prices being paid for goaltenders. It wasn't an ideal situation and likely needed address through trade

Granlund was a desperate move when he didn't land any of his wants and just threw it at the wall hoping to make something happen while handcuffing the team with a continuing contract. It was bad

I think there is zero doubt that this team needs a new tandem. Jarry/CDS had their kick at the can and haven't done squat with it.

But at the same time I think it's borderline hilarious that people really think plugging a new starter into this system is going to yield the results they are looking for. For the record I think it will help since Jarry was about as unclutch as I've ever seen the last couple seasons, especially. But it's far from a silver bullet and the vast majority of league starters are all roughly on about the same level IMO.

It's a team/system-dependent position at least to some extent. Like it or not.

In hindsight it’s strange Hextall was so worried about losing 1 player in the ED that he.. lost 2?

I don't get as worked up about the ED as some but yeah... I mean... I think we're going to be mostly looking back at the Hextall era as a whole while rubbing our collective temples.

I have no idea who they'd target at forward or defense if they wanted to shop the 14th overall, but I imagine it'd be real bad. I don't think the 14th holds nearly enough value to get you Saros or Hellebuyck, even with additions.

I think Vejmelka probably fits in that sweet spot of not being too expensive, but also being a solid goalie. I don't know that he's some gem waiting to be faceted, but I do know that I prefer him to whatever Gibson is anymore, or spending the moon and the stars on Saros or Hellebuyck (who are elite goalies, imo, just to be clear).

Hextall was worried about losing cap and given McGinn and Rodrigues’ performances that year he was right tbh. He replaced 5 mil in cap with 3ish and Rodrigues and McGinn did exactly what McCann and Tanev did in the regular season here and then more than they did in the playoffs.

Looks like we're going to get a pretty good player at 14. The next year will get a top 10 pick in the year after probably a top five pick. Things look good for the Penguins in 2028.

So how do we get Bedard to pull a Lindros and hold out demanding a trade to us?
Good question. Didn't Panarin say something to the effect that one of the main reasons he signed in Chicago was for all the young, hot, easy chicks? If Bedard is of the same mindset, might be a tough sell with yinzer chicks

Bedard grew up idolizing Sid and is always focused on improving his areas of weakness in the same mold. There's no way it's in his nature to hold out but I wishfully just hate the idea of him being in a Blackhawks jersey after what that org. did.

I'll just fantasy draft him I suppose.

That's not how it works. Look at all the other "rebuilding" teams. Go all in now

Disagree, but go all in now? With what?
With everything and 2 generational talents that are still elite NHL players.

But I guess Boston and NYR are shoo ins to win the cup anyway......oh wait.

We are right there with the right moves

And what are the Right Moves exactly? Listen, I know it's hard to give up on our core well, for most people. Not for me, they were done after 2018. All you're doing is belaboring an old and tired premise. There is no saving this core nor this incarnation of this team. It's over. The sooner you accept it the better it is for everyone.

How is it over when we were just outside looking in? And all these teams that were "supposed to win" didn't.

We are closer than you think with the right moves.

That's why even though I won't commit to the theory, Chicago winning the lotto screams the league using a kid like Bedard to re-sanitize the Hawks franchise. Like the opposite of somebody like Kane when he was young and more like Crosby or McDavid.
