Ok let's play that game. When I think Jets, I think mediocrity, horrible arena, failed franchise. Where is this fabulous history that gets recreated by using the name Jets? Is there a bunch of Stanley Cups i missed?

You couldn't have missed 3 Avco cups, because you know everything about the Jets.

In my 34 years on this planet, I don't think much of how the Leafs have turned out. Does that actually make a difference to the history of the Maple Leafs?!

While I feel chances are likely this new team probably won't be named the Jets, in my book they definitely should be. Oh well, it shouldn't matter in the grandscheme of things what the name is. One thing is for certain though, it shouldn't be the Manitoba _______. Any team in Winnipeg should be prefaced with Winnipeg.

I'm not a marketing major, but then again, neither is your average NHL fan. But when naming the team, how much do they really take into consideration the amount of draw in other markets, which everyone here seems to admit is likely to be minuscule? Why does Winnipeg care what some Hurricanes fan thinks? Is that who they're really trying to market to?

If they call them the Moose (or whatever) it will be the same situation as every new team. Some will love it, some won't, most will need to get used to the idea.

When I think "Maple Leaf", I think Canada, and I'm sure the same goes for MANY "casual" fans. It has appeal.

Yep, to non fans or the only watch an occasional game it is exactly what they think. Canada's team, they mistake them for the team wearing the red Leaf.

I suppose I don't help matters when I don't bother to correct them:snide:

Seeing the Jets flags, the "Go Jets Go!" chants, the Jets jerseys...They gotta go with Jets. No need to piss off the Winnipeg fans over jersey sales

If you need their support, then start off by giving them what they want. I guess I'm naive, but, isn't that a pretty simple equation/concept? When you say "lets not start it out on a sour note with people not supporting it just because of a name," I agree with you wholeheartedly. So let's call them the Jets, and we won't have to worry about it. You see what I'm saying? If there's a chance it's a legitimate factor, why would you even CONSIDER rolling the dice? It's a bad gamble.

Q........F..........T

The fact TNSE did not even reveal the name shows they are probably scared of the backlash. They don't have to worry though if they just give the fans what they want.

For everyone not wanting the Jets, I hope you can admit your in the extreme minority.

If memory serves, "Maple Leafs" were named after a military regiment, were they not?

Yes, and they're not the only one. The Blackhawks were named after a WWI infantry division.

I still like the Voyageurs name, but if I had to guess the options are probably the Moose, Jets, and Falcons, in that order.

I think that were arguing even though were agreeing lol.....

As much as everyone wants them to be the jets, there are reasons to stray away from the name as well.

Like I said at the bottom of my post, I want them to be called the Jets, but if they are not, its not going to be a big deal to me and it shouldnt for anyone else.

Yea! I only buy jerseys for my hometown favorite team if the name and logo are cool!

Heh. It's not like they'll stop being a fan of the team if it's not the Jets. That's just dumb.

By this logic, the Leafs must have an incredibly small fanbase

Actually what he's getting at, is Winnipegers will 'stick with their old jersies' if they name them the Jets. (That being the reason to change the name. For extra jersey sales.)

They can easily come up with a slick new Jets logo. That way, everyone is happy

I like this one

unbiased opinion: the old jets logo left a lot to be desired, and the red-white-blue color scheme is really, really, really, really overdone across all north american sports.

i wouldn't mind the name coming back, but for the love of god, shake things up a little bit in the aesthetics department

Pretty much. Regardless of the product, branding (which includes the logo) is a delicate process that needs a lot of attention. Calling the logo/name irrelevant is just foolish.

Especially when dealing with a place with an established brand already in place. It must be an agonizing decision to make, whether or not to call the team the Jets. If they don't go with the Jets, it should be something to do with Winnipeg's history or hockey tradition.

I don't think anyone would object to that. I don't think people would oppose to a logo redesign, OR a mix-up in colors. They DO want the name, however.

The choice to switch from Whalers to Hurricanes was clearly based on the best research available in the sports-marketing industry -- research which has apparently not trickled down to the junior leagues just yet. Of course, in the QMJHL the team sponsor (Moosehead Breweries) simply names the team after itself (Mooseheads), no marketing team necessary. In the NHL things are a bit more sophisticated.

FWIW, the Wild's merchandise sales are not proportionate to their attendance, TV viewership and market size. That's a hint that, perhaps, people outside of the immediate local area are not interested in their merch.
