He'll have value on a team that already has decent size but may lack a good puck mover or offensive potential.
We are pretty much the opposite of that and that is blocking Ville - we don't really need another small dman with offence.

Most on here feel Stan is not going to get a lot of minutes so that leaves Dillon as our guy with size - and many are calling him out as the guy that needs to go to make room for youth.
I wouldn't count Samberg as a heavy dman - because he isn't. JoMo is the next guy you'd be looking at who has a little edge in his game with average size. Pionk, although small, used to have that edge - we'll see this year if he's going to bring a little of that back.

Regardless of what I believe, the Jets are likely looking at potentially adding more size on their blue line (with a decent level of skill in defending).
All depends on if Pionk can get his MoJo back..

I think today's game solidified Stanley as the 5LHD.
How so? I thought Samberg has struggled so far. Not to say that this will continue but Stanley has looked godawful so far, but Heinola has looked good. Looks like the RD experiment for him might work out which is AWESOME for us. It gives us way more balance in our corps.

If that's the case, I see Samberg and Stanley battling for the last D spot with Heinola as the first RD option unless the Jets move Schmidt or there is injury.

Unfortunately, I don't see 88 as an easy move, at least not this early in the season.

I guess we could carry 8 D but that really doesn't serve Ville well as he will be a PB guy and he needs to play.

Good, detailed post, and I agree with your assessments and likely lineups.

Just wanted to add a shout-out to Dillon, who I thought had a strong game last night. Playing him in a mentor/ support role with a young D in Heinola / whoever might be the shot in the arm he needs going forward. He was playing half the ice last night.

I think they like each other and I also think that Heinola looks a lot more confident out there, despite playing his off side.

I didn't think that at all, in fact I think he's been good, certainly much better than Stanley.

I dont know why people keep saying this. Is it selective memory that let's them forget that he put up 45 points in 71 games playing next to Sbisa his first season in Winnipeg?
i think most of the gripes are with his defensive game. he was advantageous at putting up pp points that year in the pp1 slot (nearly every dman playing that spot for WPG puts up high point rates). but defensively and all-around play his canadian division year next to forbort is really an outlier of a season. even at 5v5 his production is pretty lack-luster for a supposed offensive dman that year.

But he could have done more for Sbisa!

Pionk had a rough season last year undoubtedly, but he's been more good than bad and hopefully will bounce back hard. I think he's still a bit in the shadow of the Trouba trade and of those damning early appraisals of his game.

When he's on he's one of my favourite Jets, but I think he's one of those players whose best when he's at the edge and playing with swagger. Thought he was much more restrained and playing more tentatively after the whole Sandin brouhaha and it didn't help his game.

I dont see it. Compared to his peers on the team, he did roughly as well in xGF% in his first year as his second. His xGF/60 stayed at about the same level, while his xGA/60 decreased, but that can probably largely be attributed to being removed from a partner who played one more NHL game after his Jets stint.

His xGF% of 45.09% in his first year as a Jet wasn't good in a vacuum. But no other Jets Dman who played more than 20 games (i.e. ignoring Dahlström and 10 games of DeMelo) did better.

Weird how anyone who plays with Pionk seems to struggle. It's cuz pionk sucks and was only good in the cdn division... just like Stanley too
A cynical person would say he got complacent after signing his big deal. Kind of like how I got fat after I got married lol.

I don't think that's it. I think he lost his nerve after the injury/suspension thing. Hopefully Bowness can engineer a Days of Thunder moment where he 'blows through the smoke' and regains his confidence. He isn't the same player without his edge.

I would agree definitely better than Stanley but I saw a lot of puck bobbles and poor decision making (throwing the puck up the wall blindly.

I am definitely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as none of these players have seen game action for months, and he was so solid last year on callup but saying he's been good is probably more bias from liking the player.

It's funny how two players can do the same things on the ice, but one can be lauded and the other chastized.

I am hoping for a much stronger effort from Samberg tonight and I'll be watching him very closely.

How about Chisholm? I like him more than Heinola or Samberg right now. He's a darkhorse for me by the halfway point of the season for a roster spot.

I've been watching DC since he was drafted and have really liked the way he's developed. Incredible skater with few weaknesses and the ability to play up to the level of a game -- he was the strongest D in last year's AHL playoffs by some distance, IMO.

That being said. he's way back in the pecking order with a few clear areas to improve on -- his shot repertoiore and movement on the PP, for instance -- and I suspect that the Jets will stick to form and let him "season" a bit more in the A, since they've got players like Stanley and Samberg and even Heinola who are closer.

I do think he's close to ready though, and may end up being the most useful player overall from this crop if he can put it all together. He's got all the tools.
