O play calling has me scratching my head for most of the game, not going for it on the Calgary 10 was a poor decision.
Yup, I felt like that call kind took the air out of our offense - coaches not showing trust. Don't like the 2 time counts we took - one was definitely intentional, the other was a late decision to send Brown back out...

But a win is a win, and we did JUST enough... (though I'd say Calgary lost that one rather than us winning - SO many drops by Calgary by receivers and defence... And 2 missed FG's)

pretty much obvious brown is not a first string QB ...passes were were terrible, nothing long because the coaches have no confidence in brown completing a long pass as a starter!!!!...as even as a backup against a team like the stamps he was a no show.......brown may be a good QB coming in as a relief but as a starter, forget it, bombers go nowhere!!

only reason bombers won this game was the interception by houston for a TD!!...otherwise the offense did nothing under brown as QB

The Bombers were fortunate that Collaros was hurt on the Alberta road trip against the two worst teams in the league, rather than later on, when we have game against BC and Toronto. The only reason Brown looked good last week, is Edmonton's defense is atrocious. Brown had all the time in the World to look for receivers. Obviously Calgary had a better defence, which exposed Brown.

Next week, we play a good Montreal team, and I honestly don't think we can defeat them without Collaros playing.

Game Thoughts

Offence

Well that was not the start we were expecting out of Brown. First thing first is the positives I saw. He had some good zip on the ball when throwing, and outside of one errant pass where he got lucky he avoided the big mistake. Moved well in the pocket, and kept his eyes downfield. He made enough throws the win, just barely. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened down by 3/6 points in 4th quarter if they'd been forced to air it out. But I'm guessing Brown might get one more start here so we'll see. As for the negatives he wasn't moving the ball as much as needed no doubt. Production wasn't there, but it's almost hard to say why. Alot of dink and dunk out there, was that playcalling or Brown being scared. You could really tell he was a young guy as when things were going well he got into a groove and it was smooth (early in the game, right after the defensive TD). When they bogged down he had trouble making the play to get them out of it. This is true of most young QBs. That one pass to Lawler with Roberson set up in front of Lawler was mind boggling, I could see Roberson standing there before Brown released the ball, not sure what he was thinking there, that had pick 6 written all over it. So some luck no doubt. But a week of game film and a defense that's prepared for you showed tonight. I still think Brown is one of the best up and comers in this league, but this wasn't a great performance.

Also on QB's, what the hell was with Prukop? Twice he couldn't make up his mind on the read option and caused a fumble. Talk about not helping out your starting QB. That needs to be cleaned up asap.

Oliveira had a heck of 1st half, not sure why they got away from him so much in the 2nd half. Oliveira is a great calming presence for a young QB, you need to continue to use him as both a runner and in play action to help out your young guy. I very rarely talk about play calling, but this was a poor game from Buck. I'm not sure if the conditions were worse than it looked on TV, but there was no need to abandon the run like they did. But then get super conservative with handoffs up the middle with under 5 mins left and give Calgary another chance.

OL was fairly solid actually, IMO. Hardrick didn't read the blitz very well and reacted late on the first sack, and they took a grounding that was mostly on Brown for an odd choice to try to bubble around Hardrick's man on the right contain. They were opening the holes they needed and Hardrick almost single handedly carrying Oliveira for 5 yards on the final drive the set up the Prukop sneak for the win. I thought overall Brown had the time he needed to make decisions back there.

Receivers didn't get into the action all that much. Lawler was inches away from a TD early, but in that case and at least one other wasn't able to come up with the miracle catches he's become known for. But it's unrealistic to expect that, even if Lawler expects it from himself. Schoen is still learning how to carve out a role with Lawler stealing so many targets, but he ended up leading the team in receptions and yards. Bailey is underrated as receiver/TE that they use him as. Saw a couple of occasions where he made key blocks that opened up some room for Oliveira or another receiver. Of course I did see one case where he tripped on an OL and allowed a TFL on Oliveira so it was sloppy all over. I don't think I saw Demski hardly at all.

Defence
Have to be mostly happy with this group. Bombers did is generally settling into what they are. A solid top 3 unit, but very prone to allowing the big play. They are in the upper category in every statistical category for D, except in explosion plays against where they are near the bottom of the league. Luckily they are near the top or at the top in explosion plays the other way (turnovers).

I rarely comment much on the LB's so let's start there. Kyrie Wilson looks finally to be back to 100%. He was flying out there and a key part of why the Bombers shut down arguably the best running team in the league. Carey was held to 28 yards on 10 carries, that's impressive. Calgary as a team went just 18 carries for 62 yards, just a 3.4 yard average (for reference Bombers went 21 for 112 a 5.3 yard average). Bighill wasn't super noticeable.

Along the DL I was disappointed in the lack of pressure. As the TSN commentators were saying they DL was a tiny bit disruptive to Maier, but overall I expect a higher standard from this group. Calgary's OL held up really well. Luckily this DL has more tricks than straight pressure and at least 3 ball were deflected by DL hands getting a hand on it, two be Willie and one by Jeffcoat. So that's nice. Lawson, Walker, and Thomas all did a great job plugging up those running lanes though, and Thomas even got in on it with another sack to add to his illustrious career. Thomas is one of the guys that'll maybe never end up with his name up in the stadium as he was never a top 5 DT in any one season, but damn 10-12 years manning the inside of that DL, he's still a Bomber great.

The DB's played fairly solid overall. It's hard not to start with Demerio Houston. Some are going to dislike this, but I think he reminds me more and more of Jovon Johnson. He lives and dies of the big play. Of course I'm not being critical as his pick 6 basically won this game. That's what he does and I think at this point it's foolish not to consider him the leading contender for DPOY. But he was also victimized with a long pass over his head to 5'7'' Tommylee Lewis. And Houston was there just made a poor play at the ball when it arrived. Makes big plays, but also has a penchant for giving them up as well (remember he missed the tackle cleanly to allow the 65 yard TD pass last week from Kyran Moore in the 2nd half). Redha Kramdhi is a guy that's not getting much press. He's the only Canadian in the CFL currently starting at SLB. It's a tricky position to play as it's become primarily a DB spot, but they are expected to help more in the run than traditional DB's. Once again Kramdhi showed to be very effective against the run making numerous plays on running plays. But he got lost in coverage a couple of times, including a large completion to Reggie Begelton after he drifted away from a stationary Begelton in coverage. Evan Holm has a solid game and I do not believe for a second that was a pass interference penalty on him at all. He barely touched the receivers arms, not his body on his way by to make an INT. Not PI at all. Rose, Alexander, and Nichols closed well and kept everything underneath as you need to do on Jake "Short Pass" Maier.

Special Teams
It's week 11 and not having Mike Miller is not an excuse anymore. These units need to step up big time, immediately. Kramdhi flat out missed where his blocking responsibility was on the blocked punt. Took off down the field leaving the Calgary player a free path to the punter. This cannot continue. In addition to the one that was blocked, several others were inches away. They need to figure this out. And despite these block attempts by Calgary, they were still getting huge returns from Tommylee Lewis. Bombers coverage units were not getting downfield to cover well enough as he was often untouched for 10-15 yards. A large portion of this game was such a struggle since the Bombers were getting dominated in terms of field position.

Which speaks to the other side. Janarion where art thou? Bombers are missing Janarion Grant in the worse way. McCrae's issues handling the ball again didn't cost them the ball thankfully, but damn near with a fumble that thankfully was no yards so it didn't matter, but still solid play by Hallett to recover it. Even when catching it clean McCrae doesn't have much pop as a punt returner. Time to figure out a way to get someone else on the roster to return the ball.

Castillo had a solid night again. Can't believe Edmonton let this guy walk.

Sheahan was ok. I wouldn't blame that block on him, and it's not his fault they were losing the field flips. That was mostly on the vast disparity in the two teams return games and Grace is the best punter in the CFL so not the standard to hold him to either.

Overall
Someone mentioned it, good teams find ways to win games when they don't have their A games. That's what we saw here. Did enough to win with a backup QB and more than a few guys having off nights including O'Shea. With the offense not set, 1 second on game clock on a 3rd and 1, both timeouts left with 5 minutes left in the game how do you not take a timeout! C'mon man that's an easy thing to do there. This isn't the completely dominant team of 21 or 22. There's some holes here, it's going to be a battle. But you're kidding yourself if you think the Bombers aren't at least as good a chance to win it as BC and TOR. This is a damn good team and solid chance to make it 3 grey cups in 4 tries here.

6 days until a game against a banged up Montreal team. Montreal is only going to have 5 days and will be coming halfway across the country. Would be nice to continue the streak here. Bombers and BC could both have home playoff dates locked up by Banjo Bowl with just a battle for the bye coming down the stretch. Let's make it happen boys.

LMAO @ Dru Brown. Maybe he should have spent less time talking with Collaros about where he should play next year and worried more about winning a game this week. Idiot was high on his own press. A couple decent quarters of football doesn't make you a legit starter. It just finnally makes him a reasonable back up.

To be fair the play calling was predictable. The Calgary DBs were jumping every 10 yard and less route and I didn't see much in the way of double moves by the receivers to counter that.

Brown stared down his targets and way to often threw weak passes because he didn't set his feet. The potential is there but there's still a lot to work on.

Pigrome has been far more effective in short yardage this year than Prukop. I think O'Shea and Walters messed this one up.
I agree, but hindsight is 20/20. Who'd have thought Prukop would constantly be fumbling balls this year? He was so solid in the past...

Pigrome's looked decent the few times I've watched him, though he fumbled last night, too.

Hopefully Prukop steps up and returns to form... last game wasn't acceptable to leave us in 2nd and long every time he went in for that option package on 1st down...
