they got a player that will probably contribute as much as rantanen was in stankoven. rantanen was a malcontent there. so they flipped him for a player 2 1sts and 2 thirds.
Agreed - I think CAR did great. Nobody views things in terms of asset management. Rantanen wasn't committing to CAR long term even though they offered a very competitive deal. Instead of losing him, just like they lost Guentzel previously, they elect to get value for him. And they got a lot of value.

CAR in no way lost. the haul for rantanen is more then what they would get for necas.

Rantanen trade hold up handcuffed Canes from pursuing trades on players they targeted because they had no cap flexibility which needed to be resolved with the Rantanen deal which took time to process. So yes, Canes lost out.

As a Sabres fan- cool, Joki and Cozens are both moving on

As a Bruins fan- dammit, still have to watch Joki. We were losers before the day even began anyways

Losers: Buffalo and NYI
I like those two franchises and hope for the best for them, but they are going right into the wall. It's rebuild time for those two, and this deadline was a seller market. They should have accepted reality and got a f***ing pirate chest worth of assets, to speedrun the part where you have to suck ass for years to accumulate them.

Loser: Montréal and Vancouver
It was a great time to acquire a 2nd line center, if not for this year, for next year. They didn't do shit. Moreso, we have expiring contracts coming up, and we didn't get assets from them. It's waste, and I hate that. Vancouver is still in limbo. What the hell is happening over there?

Loser: Oilers: Average defense and suspect goaltending. Always the same problems, and it's seems it will stay the same.

Losers: Every teams in the Central who didn't do shit
You are now stucked with Dallas and Colorado, who are armed to the teeth. Good luck with that.

Loser (but it could have been so much more worse): Carolina
Somehow, their GM kind of save them from his own f*** up, but at the end of the day, they should have sticked with Necas

Winners: Florida, Colorado and Dallas
They did not f*** around, they armed themselves and are now ready for war. They are STACKED.

Winner: Ottawa
Norris is good, but the problem is, he's made of the finest silk. They had their way with Buffalo, which suck because I despise the Senaturds

Winner: Boston
Boston is the Anti-Buffalo/NYI. They understood they needed to sell, and they did just that.

Rantanen’s agent is the biggest loser

From comfy negotiation that your client desired

To exposed to playoffs without a contract on a random team

To flipped again and being so weak the opposing party could get you at a substantial discount to your ask, an event where you to walked away from the deal only to come back when your “strategy” had nothing left.

Ass tier Agent. Should be fired or resign.

Rantanen and Wyatt Johnston have the same agent. He just negotiated an 8 year, $12 million contract extension for Rantanen and a 5-year, $8.4 million contract extension for Johnston. Agents get 4% (correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm not sure of the exact percentage) of the pay they negotiate for. He just made himself $5.52 million today. I wouldn't call that being a big loser.

BUt they didn't spend the cap space they freed up. That was their misstep.

I didn’t know about Wyatt’s relationship. That’s an absolutely killer deal.

I felt it would be hard for teams to offer or agree to the Matthews path again, so I feel anybody who grabs that has won. It really puts the player in the best position while also getting them a very respectable annual rate.

If they’re the same guy - that’s a cool victory and a public defeat. It happens. I’ll throttle back a little :)

I like the Stars going all in
Ottawa also did some nice trades
Pittsburgh got some decent value for guys that aren't worth as much

Carolina got fair value, but lost a step or two in the process
Toronto traded 4 guys, 2 x 1sts and only got 2 depth players? I'd be furious if I was a fan
Tampa overpaid for Gourde, big time

the team lives and dies by the core 4, tre did an alright job grabbing a 3C to help defensively in the bottom six and chip in + he added a top 4RHD which we needed (been playing Philip Myers there or OEL on off hand which isn't ideal). Both guys have term and retention which is a plus.

he's chosen the same route as the past gm did, which is to insulate the core, instead of adding to it or changing it. It hasn't worked out yet, but with this being maybe the last crack at it with this specific group, let's see if the core can finally reward somone's faith in them

Canes are going to get more production from Stankoven than they were getting from Rantanen who was set on bolting after the season.
Add in 2 x1sts and 2x3rd and CAR will have plenty of ammo to make other adds the next couple yrs.

Only 1 of those 4 players held any value… let’s not be so dramatic

The Leafs 2 biggest needs were addressed. They paid a TDL premium but so did every other team. Ultimately they are a much better team today than they were yesterday.
