Wings sign Tarasenko to a 2 year deal

He definitely had interest from Philly. But Cleary denied any firm details were worked out. Strange the Detroit Free Press would report something so concrete only to have the player walk it back. HSJ is a lot of things to a lot of people, but she doesn't materialize contract numbers from thin air so I'm going to assume she got it from a reputable source (Cleary's agent) then everyone got cold feet and the walkin' back began.

“If I was going to go there, I needed to go there 100 percent,'' he said. “I didn’t think it was fair to (Holmgren) or to Mr. Snider (owner Ed) and the organization, or the players, or the Philly fans. My heart was here and I had a change of heart.”​
 
Cleary was an underrated player and an absolute beauty. It is awesome that he is still working in the organization.

He fell off those last couple of seasons but the hate he got was way out of control and was completely disproportionate to his impact on the team/roster.

100%. I still talk to their team coordinator even after 10 years. I have lots of stories of the players when i worked there form getting stuck in an Elevator with Brendan Smith. Running to the Casino to grab a fistful of playing cards for Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Showing Zetterberg a photo of my cat I named after him in her little Zetterberg jersey my g/f at the time made for her. Being horrified as a new Front Desk intern went to check in Lidstrom and asked for his ID and said she couldn't check him in without his ID, Resort policy. And handing Holland Cleary's contract that needed to be signed by noon or something that day.

There is also the fact that technically an agreement like that is against the CBA. You can’t agree to future 1-year deals as a stipulation of signing a contract. Nobody was going to admit to it. I mean just look at his final contracts and it’s obvious. Nobody sane would offer Cleary 2.5M after his 8pts in 52 games at 35 years old who was a healthy scratch from January on. This report basically has Holland admitting it without saying it directly.

His brain is still there, but his legs seem really shot. It's been painful watching him try to skate to pucks, with pucks, or struggle to get the puck out under pressure

He's not really effective offensively either. He has to be playing through something that inhibits his whole game like hip pain right?

He is in healthy scratch territory. He is doing virtually nothing out there. He isn't creating any offence at all, which is why he is getting no pts. We aren't talking about a guy who is snakebit here.

He has played fewer games over the past 4 years than most and still he looks exhausted. I am not sure what the Wings do with this guy, but he isn't carrying his weight (and has another year on his deal). Would someone take him for nothing and pick up year 2 at 4.5M hoping he catches fire in the post season?? He was 5-4-9 and plus 4 in the 24 game Panthers run. At this point, the next injury should inlcude Elmer getting the call up and Vlad watching.

It's a cliche and rather illogical, but Tarasenko just can't do anything right ... at all. Like, nothing. Everything he touches is like a hand grenade. He's trying harder under TMac, but it's not clicking at all.

Too bad. Seems like a good guy.

Dont know why anyone thought bringing him here was ever a good idea. Was clear he was done

Eat 50% and send him for a 6th to a cap strapped team and hope they take him for his name. That's why we signed him

Be done with him and bring up elmer

I mean he's 33 and just put up 55 points last year and 46 of them were even strength points so he was like ~25th in the league in that for Wingers

he clearly wasn't what he used to be at his best but I don't think it was crazy to think he could come here and be solid scoring depth for a couple years

obviously it hasn't worked out though

He isn’t though. What “service” does he provide? He bungles nearly every play. He’s not good defensively. He’s not good offensively. He’s pacing for less than 30 points. He isn’t physical. He isn’t even respected on the PP anymore. No one is afraid of Tank getting a shot off anymore. He’s totally useless. He’s a 4th line warm body at this point.

There is nothing about his 40 games in a Wings uniform that suggests he’ll go on a streak. At no point has he looked dangerous offensively here. Maybe he’ll cobble together a few points at a time, a la Veleno, but there is nothing left in that tank.

Retain and trade. He was never going to be a good fit for this team.

I wish Tank well at whatever team he eventually goes to next. But I hope he is the very last cheap placeholder for awhile.

As the kids get incorporated, if you need one or more veterans to supplement things, either pay for a better tier of free agent or make a damn trade. Stop adding guys that have zero chance at being an asset when the team gets to winning playoff games.
