Confirmed with Link: Wings Fire Lalonde and Hire Todd McLellan

It’s incredible that McLellan was the one to use Ed-Aljo pairing and not Lalonde, considering McLellan wasn’t even in the organization and still referenced their time as a pairing in GR. While Lalonde never even considered it
i don't know about all that. lalonde was likely coaching for his job all season, and it's not hard to imagine trusting 2 vets to get their shit together over playing 2 rookies together

Its very hard to imagine when you watched Petry play in the top 4, they were losing and could've tried anything with how atrocious they were

let me rephrase. it's not hard to imagine lalonde trusting 2 vets getting it together over 2 rookies

lalonde was a bonehead

If the team continues to play well (win or lose) showing great chemistry, I can't see SY moving out any of the vets unless they ask to (I can see Husso or Lyons being moved), especially if they are in the thick of things for a spot, as none of them will bring back anything in the way of immediate help. I don't see him reaching for a rental, way too soon for that as well, but he should and likely will pounce on any hockey trade to make the team better if a good deal in his mind presents itself.

Even if the team goes on an absolute tear and exceeds expectations immensely in the next month and half, I cannot see SY going crazy at the TDL, unless some other team makes him an offer he cannot refuse that fits the window.

Next summer...I can see some moves being made.
Given that he stood pat last TDL and in the end a slight bump would gave helped, ifvtge DRW are a legit playoff contender in late February, then it is incumbent upon SY to moderately add, and give the players a bit of a bump down the stretch.

I said i give him 5 games, well it's now been more and i can say i was wrong. Guess it's not always "old boys club" when you hire a coach who's been around for a while. Still i have to say i wish all the best for Lalonde and i hope he bounces back at some point, maybe get a job as an associate and then after as the bench boss. Very likeable guy, just didn't fit Wings but maybe his time is in the future elsewhere.

I don’t think he can be an NHL head coach. He doesn’t have the personality to lead. I’ve never in any sport seen pressers as pathetic as the ones Lalonde gave.

The whole team has looked better since the coaching change, but Johansson in particular has looked like a different player as of late.

This was the Johansson I was expecting to be a DRW. Fast, simple, quick at moving the puck, solid defending the rush, can hold the offensive blue line and not be a black hole.

Early season AlJo is a symptom of most coaches' reluctance to trust kids. You can't take a player that's used to playing top-pairing every situation at every level he's ever played at and then have them rot on the bench with 3rd pairing minutes in the handful of games he actually gets dressed for. Not every player can adapt to that role change. If you want a prospect to be a good player for you, you have to allow them to be a good player for you. Same thing applies to putting scoring forwards on the checking lines. It's setting players up to fail.

It’s nice to see him fit well with Edvinsson. Would like to see them keep growing as a pairing. Now to just find someone to play with Seider (other than Chiarot).

Not to mention, rotating him in and out of the lineup without giving him a true shot at gaining traction in the lineup was the biggest rookie coach move ever. That's how young promising players bust

Johansson many times flashed the ability to battle hard at and around the net, skate hard, and support/move the puck. He just had the same dark cloud of rookie mistakes being hung over his head if he wasn't immediately a world beater. It's almost as if the Lalonde plan was always to not play him if he didn't "fit the system" and thus ruin his development

Assuming Johansson stays the course with Edvinsson down the stretch, Petry should rotate in and out with Holl and play the bottom pair

I think that should be Detroit’s top priority at the TDL or this offseason. A real 2/3D that puts Chiarot as a 3rd pairing guy would be amazing for this team. Broberg would have been ideal but that ship sailed. Byram? Miller? Any other suggestions?

Best team at NHL since coaching change.
