Windsor Spitfires 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Folks, we definitively have a goaltending issue. Joey since Christmas has been the Joey that many if us wanted moved/releases prior to the regular season Frogett steady but not a whole lot better. Better bring in Newlove or Windbiel or both. 1st round win could easily be an issue. All that hard work and effort for 1st half of season is being pissed away. Only 3 wins in last 8 games is not good this time of year.
I think this all a much larger issue. The D does not have enough high caliber players eg NHL picks. Certainly not enough to compensate for questionable goaltending. Furthermore you have a backup goalie that isn't playing at an average level. They did very little at the deadline had the division wrapped up and you have seen a team coast to the end.

I don’t expect Newlove or Windbiel to get a deeper look this year, but I wish they would.

I wasn’t quick to pull the trigger on the “needs a change of scenery” for Joey playing below what we had seen, on a disaster of a team last season (lack of scoring, atrocious defense, coaching staff replaced). The bounce back this year, assured me it was all those factors. Then post Christmas, it’s got me second guessing everything.

There’s plenty of reasons to be frustrated when giving up a goal. I was a bit closer than I sit normally in Kingston, and man, some of those minus guys seemed visibly frustrated when getting back to the bench. It’s almost as if they’re losing faith too.

Scary place to be as a second seed. I think most of us have realistic expectations, with high hopes.

If these guys want to win, they got a tough road ahead. It’s going to require a lot of blocked shots, and a lot of physical hockey.

We have the size to wear down the best teams in a 7 game series. If we play this, let’s overpass the puck thing, the only successful line will be Greentree/Protas.

Remember when our power play felt successful and we were scoring in the first 30 seconds? Now it seems even if we win the draw we’re not releasing a shot in the first 30 seconds.

I don’t think we’re “doomed” BUT post deadline, I prefer our team on paper. But pre-Christmas, the team seemed to feel more effective on the ice.

I assume that no update is not positive like even a "day to day" comment . Fingers crossed it is not a long term. Without Mathurin and questionable goaltending it is not looking good to closing out a really good start to the season. Lots of tough competition coming. Games against Sarnia and Soo the "easiest " won't be with them fighting for a spot. London 2 games, Kitchener, Erie, Kingston, Saginaw. Ouch.

Hate to be a team that backs into anything but if Saginaw loses tonight and fails to pick up 2 points and does not get a row win then Windsor will have the division. Would have been nice to have done it last weekend on their own win but it did not go well, so here they are.

Barring some freak thing from Flint, I'm expecting Windsor to need to get the win at home tomorrow, or a win at all, to pull it off. Saginaw is rolling and it's going to be tough for anyone to snag a point, let alone two.

Playing actual defense helps a lot..

I just hope our players/goalies can learn from these bad games and bad personal performances and take that as motivation to perform better going into playoffs, more consistent effort needed especially from Costanzo, it's either a mental thing or he has a nagging injury but either way he needs to be better for this team and a lot more consistent if this young team has any chance of going anywhere. Everyone needs to pull up their socks and get ready for playoff style hockey.

Hope this team comes with a better gameplay and overall effort than last week up in Kingston or will get handed another loss. I think Froggett with the Start tonight, and if he performs well give him tomorrow as well in a big match up. Costanzo could use some time on the bench watching from that perspective and taking time off in action because he has looked like the Costanzo we seen the majority of last season and just fighting the puck and not sound positionally.

Really need to string together some wins now and build that confidence needed going into playoffs.

Go Spits Go!!

Spits vs Kingston
Mathurin, Gaymes and Costello not dressed.
Walton and Winegard are in
Froggett gets the start
Has only allowed 1 goal his last 91 minutes of action, the win over Peterborough and replacing Joey 28 minutes in at Ottawa, stopped 31/32 shots in those 2 games.
Hope he keeps it up

Also with Mathurin out I think we will see a lot more of Hicks. Baptism by fire I thinks.

Important game for a few egos .

A must to see production from the secondary scoring group. Top teams will take Greentree and Protas out of the equation so time for the " other" players to step up. Be safe.

I think Costanzo is trying. I think it's a bunch of things. He's probably not near 100%, they don't have a reliable backup, they don't have a string deep d, and we have seen Costanzo for almost 3 years now and he's probably an average goalie. He can have a great stretch but turnaround and be well below average. They had a real good run where the D was better than the sum of their parts. They still have time to fix certain things but at this point they will be judged on the playoffs.

See more 44 pinching also.
His playing time will increase also

You can say we don’t have a reliable backup, but for the last two months, our backup has looked more like our starter.

Hopefully they can get it fixed, whatever the hells going on.

My big thing is we have gone through several highly touted goalie prospects I n the past few years and haven't panned out. I blame BB for focusing offense first drafts for the past years outside of Hicks
