Lemieux was the 2nd pick and was signed and he stays all year. Auto A card. Cannot be sent down to B or traded as he was not a 1st rounder. That is why Davis wasn't signed initially and the year before Manzo. Second picks ( not necessarily 2nd round) stick if they signed with the OHL club. Both 2nd picks overall by the Spits signed with Lasalle so they could be sent there. Nothing new here. Just this year with 6 signed with 2 being US born players makes it confusing and highly rare. Garden, Windbiel, Belchetz, Lemieux make the roster based on rules. Belchetz and Lemieux are the 2 regular roster spots and Garden andvWindbiel are the 2 allowed wild card roster spots. 4 total 16 yr olds as per CHL rule book. Hicks and Brocklehurst are Canadian born so they can be sent to Jr B. If Windbiel and Garden were Canadian, Bowler could have assigned any of the 4 to Lasalle etc.

From what I've picked up on these boards this isn't correct. There were tons of 2nd picks last year that weren't in the OHL all year. Gravelle (Oshawa), Weir (Kingston), Medvedev (London) and Cloutier (Saginaw) all played less than 5 games.
I think all it means is that if you have 4 16 year olds, 2 of them have to be your top two picks. If one of your top two picks isn't ready, then you're stuck with only being able to play 3.

That's true. Great point. I was working on the assumption that the Spits will and plan to carry 4- 16yr olds this year. If they do, then Lemieux will be one of them. Yes, you can assign an affiliate player to the GOJHL as long as they have not played more than 5 games in Major junior in same season. That of course changes after playoffs/season is done for said GOJHL team.

. Im assuming Costanzo starts tonight to prove himself. I forgot who was scratched last game that could play today but I could see one of the older guys like Morneau or Abraham getting a night off. Im also assuming no one is suspended but with all the fights and misconducts im kinda surprised no one is yet. Hopefully we beat Niagara but we'll see how it goes. Curious to see what BB does with all the extra players we got. Go Spits Go!

Not sure if you read other threads or not but it sounds like these rules are about to/ or have already changed.
No limit on games before Jan 10 and after reduced to 10 for the remainder of the season. Also no limit on 16 yr olds assigned to B but that sounds like only the Jrb league. Also who can be reassigned has already been changed?

Morgan doesn't surprise me at all. I appreciate what he brought but he's 15th forward at best right now (behind Stewart and Greenwell).
Morgan probably would of the 17 forwards on the exhibition game roster 16th and Stewart 17th,organization depth more then anything, 13,14,15 for me would be Lemieux, Brocklehurst and Greenwell, alot more organizational depth in the organization in all 3 areas, goal,D and upfront since the 3 drafts.
The depth I think is huge. It seems we’ve been plagued with injuries a bit the last few years with not much to bring up.
While I think what will be announced as our top 12 forwards won’t shock many, if we have to bring up guys, it’s going to be a lot more exciting to see what they can do, rather than it just being a body to fill a gap for a weekend.
It is automatic if Bowler wants to roster 4-16 year olds. Yes, he could in theory only roster 2 or 3 and send Lemieux to an affiliate. Copied below is directly from the OHL draft guide.
Selected Players in the OHL. OHL Member Teams are permitted to register a maximum of four 16year old players selected in the OHL Priority Selection. Those 16 year old players that are allowed to be signed are the first two 16 year old players selected and a maximum of two additional 16 year old wild carded player signed in any round of the OHL Priority Selection. All other 16-year-old players selected are eligible to be called up as an “affiliated player” or “floating affiliate player” for a maximum of 10 games or for any OHL regular season or playoff games when such player’s team has been eliminated from competition for that season.
Interesting to note regarding the 2024-2025 WHL pilot project with 15 years olds as affiliates. Main points copied below from the WHL website. How long before the OHL adopts this model? Probably a precursor with the pending NCAA allowing CHL players the CHL needs another year of potential eligibility.
- Roster composition
- All 15-year-old affiliate players will be eligible to play up to 10 games with their WHL Club, the same as 16-year-old affiliate players.
- Instead of rostering a maximum of five 15-year-old affiliate players in a season, WHL Clubs will be allowed to name up to nine by January 10
- If a WHL Club cannot dress a full roster of 20 players for a game, the team will now be eligible to dress two 15-year-old affiliate players.
- WHL Clubs will be able to designate one 16-year-old player, who upon being returned to a Junior A, Canadian Sport School Hockey League or U18 team, will be allowed to play up to 15 games in the WHL.
- If one of the four Members participating in the pilot has granted a 12-, 13- or 14-year-old player special status to play in an advanced age category, any such player must be evaluated to ensure they currently meet and are deemed to continue with special player status in their 15-year-old year to qualify and continue to be eligible to play up to 34 games in the WHL.
How would the OHL ever adopt that? The WHL has a bantam draft where they already drafted 09s back in the spring. OHL doesn't draft 09s until Apr 2025.
Not saying the OHL will, but Hockey Canada were the ones pushing this. They say it is an attempt to streamline development of Junior players. The new model focus is "evolving with the needs of Canadians in a system based on an athlete-centered approach " the Finnish and Sweedish and other euro top pro leagues have had 16 yr olds playing. I can see it eventually happen especially if the NCAA starts allowing CHL players to come over. Also how long before the CHL transfer agreement changes? Quality players will be needed to keep up the level of play. Hook them earlier.

This makes sense. He's a solid player but caught up in a numbers game. I doubt it's the last time we'll see him this season.
