Some thoughts...
Looking at the goals against...
1. Beck sneaks in, gets the puck, and beats Donoso. You can't give him that much room. Cristoforo tried to get him but it was too late.
2. Donovan scoring from the point can't happen. Create traffic, create something... but don't allow that to start the third period.
3. Hay works past Toms, gets the puck on net, then is all alone and puts it over Donoso's pad. That was on Toms... he let him go and that's a no-no.
4. Willis gets in behind everyone and beats Donoso low. Again, they let the guys slide wherever desired.
5. A tipped point shot. I don't fault Donoso here.
- When you outshoot a top contender through 40 and have a lead with 10 minutes to go, you're doing something right. Windsor was strong defensively, capitalized on offence, and played the game we know they're capable of.
- The Hay goal was the backbreaker. First, you allow a goal to open the period. Then, you allow one the shift after you make it 4-2? No. Can't happen. Plant the guy on his ass.
- That set up Saginaw to pounce like nobody's business. Props to them for not quitting, I guess?
- Speaking of props, Cristoforo had a huge blocked shot in the third and had issues skating to the bench, so stuck it out on the ice. Something something "soft"? I know, I know, "HIT HIM AND CLEAR THE NET!" Yeah...
- Smith with two points and a really solid overall effort. Can we get that every game?
- I don't know what it is about Donoso and the point shots. The Hounds did it multiple times and now the Spirit follow suit? He's great down low and I thought he was in for a fantastic night. Then, the point shots start coming. Is he being screened? Is he just flubbing them? I don't get it.
- The elephant in the room - Hay and Winegard. Props to Tanner for getting it over with fairly early. You knew it was coming, though I kind of wanted Zito to do the deed. Winegard did well, though, and you know he's got your back.
- 5,000+ crowd. Keep that going!
Petes on Saturday, then in Saginaw on Sunday. You need at least two points from that, somehow. Figure it out.
I'm taking tonight as a glass half full idea. Yep, they lost... and it wasn't a pretty way to end the game. However, you take the 6th rated team in Canada to the third period, up 4-2, that's not bad. They played 45 minutes of hockey. If they can figure out the other 15, they'll be set. There's a lot to work on and everyone agrees with that, but there were plenty of positives tonight, too. I think most could agree with that. Onto the next......
