Some thoughts on tonight...

Goals against...

1 - Martin gets away from the Windsor D, who was on the ice in the corner, then beats Walton to the crease. Puts it 5-hole.
2 - Toms with a giveaway in the slot and the Firebirds bury it.
3 - Off a draw, Maillet doesn't get his guy going to the net and it's an open cage on a rebound.

- The first period was one of their best of the season. They were fired up to get the teddy bears flying and it worked. It was a pretty ideal start.
- The second and thirds were nothing short of lucky. Allowing 41 shots in 40 minutes is unacceptable and they all knew it. There are some games you lose that you might deserve to win. This was a game they won that maybe they didn't deserve to. I don't think any of them will give the points back, though.
- Peer with a five-point night, which I believe is a career high. I know it's his first OHL hat-trick. He was zippin' around out there like he owned the place. If nothing else, that helps his trade stock IF they look at that route.
- Greentree got in on the act with a pair. While there are times he looks like he's trying to do too much, this was the game he needed.
- Cristoforo had two assists and was a plus-three. Yell at him about random things you don't like if it makes you feel better, but he's getting the job done.
- Abraham finally gets the boulder off his shoulders. He looked relieved. Fortunately, it's not from a lack of effort; he's been snakebitten. Hopefully this opens the flood gates.
- Michelone with a brilliant performance. That's four solid outings in a row dating back to the coaching change. He's calm, collected, and making saves that few others would get to.
- Loved the Teddy Bear Toss. That's a lot of kids that are going to have a smile this holiday season, which is what matters.

After the game, I brought up an idea. I'm not saying I want this to happen but I can't help but think about it. IF (emphasis on that) Michelone continues to perform this well, do you maybe look at trading Costanzo at the deadline and bringing up Froggett? A month ago, I wouldn't have even considered this but, with how things have played out recently and with the deadline in a month, it has to be asked.

Anyway, London on Thursday in the last home game before Christmas. If they play like the first period, they could grab a point or two. If they play like the second and third periods, it's going to be ugly.
I was thinking the same about Costanzo but, and it's a big but. Michelone would be an OA next year and I don't really want to go that route again and have him play like Onuska did. Better to keep Costanzo and Frogget for next season. Costanzo will turn it around, at least I hope he will.

Ideally, Costanzo finds his game, Michelone ups his value, and they can send him to a playoff team for a fair value. Then bring up Froggett and move forward with the rebuild. This was just a thought that made me go "hmm... what if?"

Agree. What Costanzo would fetch in a trade right now would be minimal and cost more to replace him. If Michelone stays hot that opens the possibility of keeping him wih Froggett next year. Costanzo needs to pick it up now that team support is greatly improved. Don't forget Altiman who has been stellar this year so far. Froggett Altiman next year?

Saturday's game the squad did not play a bad game, just didn't capitalize on chances. Today they were outplayed for large parts of the game but received stellar goaltending and made the most of their chances.

Each game I watch I like Zhugin more and more, he is quite the skater. Mancini is solid defensively. Hard to find anyone who doesn't like that trade with Saginaw, considering Bowler also got 2 2nd's. Woodall looks really good out there on the blue line and Cristoforo has been solid recently.

Regarding Peer, it's not worth trading him unless you can get a 2nd in return. He's on pace for about 90 points.

There should be opportunities to get just that for him. Kitchener and Misssissauga have (somewhat) open inport spots. North Bay, Ottawa, and especially Sudbury (after giving up on Vondras) could all be interested in upgrading on what they have. Peer is an amazing player that would be an upgrade on most contenders, outside of the Soo.

I'm not opposed to moving Peer as there are two ways to look at it.
1) We never even spent a draft pick on him. No harm in keeping him.
2) We never spent a draft pick on him, lets cash in on whatever we can get.
Based on the stuff the Spits post on socials and such, it feels like Peer is a big driver of the room that may hurt to toss away. It's a down year… I'd be listening to all offers. That being said I like our OA grouping.

Not opposed to moving Costanzo at this point, but it's not preferred. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Michelone has similar value although he's an 04'. 2 Rookie Goalies won't happen, period. It's more likely we get stuck with an 04/05' Tandem next season than Altimann/Froggett although I'd want one of those two here.

Michelone has been great, and has changed my view on him as everything I saw with him out of Flint was less than impressive to say the least. Ideally, I'd move him to a contender this year, as a backup it gives him an opportunity to earn a spot/create more eyes to keep him in the league as an OA. However, I'd be open to Costanzo offers, but they have to be good. I want one of our current goalies, and one of Altimann/Froggett next season. I don't mind what we have right now for the remainder of the season, but Michelone's trade stock has to be the highest it's ever been considering he came over for a 13th.

With today's win, Torres is 5-3 as a head coach, and the Spitfires have (for now), surpassed the Niagara Ice Dogs and sit 19th in the OHL. They're 3 points behind Sarnia with a game in hand for 9th in the Western. Not much to brag about, but competitive hockey has returned.

Nesbitt coughed up Michelone's shut out the other night. Sure, maybe not "sitting" worthy, but it's okay to sit a rookie some if someone else is earning minutes.

Abraham had a great weekend and seemed fired up and engaged throughout despite his minimal showing on the stat sheet.

Seems like a lot of people are behind Struthers getting ice time but what I saw I wasn't overly impressed. Not opposed to seeing them out there, but he's an 04'. He's not going to earn an OA spot here so if he's not contributing now, what's the point?

I'd rather get experience for Martin, Greenwell and Nesbitt (even Outwater who hasn't been producing much), as there's potential for those guys to contribute for an entire season beyond this one.

That being said, I don't think anyone in here defends Colton Smith, but for some reason he's got the coaching on board with putting him in games. I'd be happy to play any of our 05's and younger over him at this point. Even sliding in Winegard as a 7th D isn't something I'd be opposed to.

Then just run Peer/Maillet/Greentree with the pair of young 4th line forwards. Gives the 4th line something extra to work with, and those 3 are all workhorses that find ways to constantly be involved. I don't think Nesbitt has earned 1st/2nd line minutes, but getting him a skilled linemate could open up his opportunities.

Our 4th line doesn't see much ice so I don't think rotating some of the nights top performing players would be harmful. Plus with the added TV/Ice timeouts this year, it provides a good chunk of extra rest for players to the point the 4th line is rarely needed.

Re captaincy - Naming someone now, only to have the deadline soon after the break, doesn't make sense. Three of the guys you could name to the group - Abraham, Maillet, and Peer - could all be traded. Wait until the deadline to at least name a formal assistants group, then name a captain next season, like Greentree.

Re Peer being moved - I'm not sold that it's the best option right now. All indications are that the room is tighter than it's been all season and he's a character you're going to need. After you traded Christo/Dio/DeA, I'm not sure you want to deal Peer unless you're blown away.

RIP Giallonardo. What a horrible situation :(

Rather have a captain that stays for more than 1 year on the team..

LOL. The point was there is alot of high end draft picks that are playing in the USA. Nothing more
