Ryerson has a better squad than the Spitfires will this year. On a young Spitfires team, he'd get a chance to play and produce. On a not-so-young Ryerson team, he wouldn't be as high in the depth charts.

You're still getting looks ("eyes") from the NHL. Getting noticed and going to camp is still a key thing in any player's life. If you want to use another example - Chatfield. Free agent and now signed by Vancouver.
It means the Spits thought he was expendable as in there wasn't much value keeping him around.
