From what I've seen, players are running away from that place.

Player: "I want out"
GM: " Take a discount !"

Feel free to suggest what would entice anyone to take a discount there, angle Treviling could push to "drive a bargain" so to speak.
Agreed.

So we can agree that it's premature to say he drives a hard bargain until we see it actually happen.

Correct. I'm seeing his tenure in Calgary as trying to patch a leaking ship and from a crisis manager perspective he did a great job.

At the same time, he is not dealing with RFAs like his predecessor but UFAs with NMC.

Not sure if there is enough wiggle room to drive hard bargains, but hopefully he'll surprise us.

I did but I don't really understand your point. Marner was the best player in the Tampa series. He is the only Leaf with a game winning goal in the Forida series.
The idea that Nylander made any difference is pretty laughable. He had the same game winning goals and points this year as Marner and Matthews. (all 1 goal 1 asssist).
Those 2 points amount to 2/3s of all the game winning playoff points Willy has scored in the last 4 playoffs. Marner and Matthews has 5 (as does Drai, McDavid, Barkov to name a few)
This primary vs secondary nonsense is a joke. Marner has 327 more career primary points than Willy.
Lets not even begin with defense.
Willy and Mitch each scored a goal in that game. What made Mitch's goal the 'game winner'? A late defensive error that allowed Florida a goal.

If hockey used the same method as baseball - the goal (run) that puts you ahead to stay is the 'winner' it would have still been Willy's.

Unless it's in overtime or the only goal, GWG is pretty meaningless.

I don't define game winning goals. It's guys like you that use phrases "when it counts" to qualify your awful takes on Marner

I didn't say that you defined it, I didn't use the phrase "when it counts", and I didn't make any 'take' on Marner.

You used it as a reason Marner was better, and I just pointed out that it was irrelevant.

-A 'smart' team targets a player like Nylander at 4-5 years at no more than $8m per year.
Compared to other similar production players, that is where he should be. At 27 years old, he is at his 'statistical peak', by the end of the contract he will likely be producing less, and there are several younger/just as good/productive or better players getting paid about the same or less. (Jack Hughes, Hintz, Robertson, Tage Thompson, etc).

-A 'dumb' team looks at his very best season and projects that to continue to occur, maybe even get better, and pays him $9.5 or $9.75 in a long term deal. They ignore his career play (hes more of a 30-35 goal guy that isn't 100% effort all the time), and ignore that most of a long term deal will be overpaying for declining production from the mid-point of the contract.

-The Leafs are in a position like many other teams. They aren't necessarily 'smart' or 'dumb', but they are 'desperate', or at least in a position of 'need' where its hard to let a player like him go. SO....They may WANT to go the 5 year route at $8m per year, which wouldn't be a low-ball offer based on the player, but because of their cup window being in the next 3-4 years they can't take a chance of letting a guy like him go.

Why do posters think that they have any clue how salaries are determined, and always go well below market, and call it fair or over market?

Feelings, and comparing to contract from half a decade ago show the utter lack of knowledge, and lack of research. "I GO BY FEELZ AND I AM RIGHT!!"
