I may have agreed prior to this season, but Matthews has been a legitimate two-way beast this year. Even then, his tracked defensive metrics have always been phenomenal; his macro results have finally caught up.
Hence why I said 'natural'. Matthews has worked on it and reached another level, but before this season I felt like Nylander looked the most comfortable defensively and always had a good sense of knowing where he needed to be; if he got beat it was largely cause of effort rather than being lost or not understanding the fundamentals.

Nylander has a few pics floating online where you can see the dude is absolutely shredded. I remember when Ferraro shut down Hayes when he had to explain theres a difference between being in shape vs being in game shape.

Nylander is a strong man. You can see this easily when he's engaged in board battles.
Yup, Willy is jacked.

It's funny how easily everyone turns on a player from one year (or one game) to the next. Nylander has been awesome this year but if we're comparing Nylander's getting paid +1 year vs Marner's getting paid +1 year, well, it's not close. If Nylander can improve this much in a year, Marner is going to make a lot of people look really silly next year.

now that is impressive, there is just no way in hell he can be called overpaid at this point. And he is pushing into underpaid territory if we are being honest. Assuming of course he keeps up this pace, and becomes a 30-45 75~ point player. Now his pace under keefe of 96 points im not convinced he will get that in a full season but if he ever does he'd have to enter best contract in the league territory

Yeah, Nylander had a terrible year last year, but he missed training camp, wasn't in game shape when he joined the roster in Dec and had already missed a good chunk of the season, and it seemed like Babcock punished him by not playing him with Matthews and kept him mostly on the 3rd line...I'm not sure what Marner's $10.9 million excuse is when he's been playing with Matthews this season. To be a more impactful player, Marner's gotta improve his shot.

Whose fault was it that he wasn't in shape? Hyman missed camp and the start of this year and he's been unbelievable. Sorry, that excuse just doesn't fly. What I'm saying is sometimes it's human nature to put too much pressure on yourself to live up to a big contract. Anyone who thinks Marner can't and won't be better than he's shown this year just hasn't been paying attention.

Never said it wasn't Willy's fault...Matty actually said he worked out alot, but got too big and muscular, which wasn't fit for game shape...what excuse does Marner have? And who is saying Marner can't improve? Truth is, Marner really needs to improve to justify his contract.
