Marner had 67 points in 55 games which is around 100 point pace in the second year of his contract. My point is that Nylander has yet to reach anywhere near that level in his 4th. If Nylander can maintain around a point a game this year, it would be a massive improvement. A 1 million gap is hardly a fair delineation

see response in above post.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in last year’s inflated numbers. Firstly, it was pace, secondly the division was much weaker. We can all see that putting up points this season is much harder. Fwiw, I did say 1 million plus an adjustment for salary cap %. Also, I am comparing them in the here and now. Let’s not turn this into a Nylander vs Marner thread, it will only devolve into a Marner hate thread, we’re better off going back to praising Willy.

edit, meant to quote @Notsince67 second last post about Marner’s 100 point pace last season.
Over a 90 point pace for 82 consecutive games since december 2018 if you think his points are inflated

You referenced last years numbers, which is what I responded to.

My humble opinion, his 94 point season was his best. Nylander has clearly improved more since his contract year.

Back to the Nylander discussion…

When the two are at their best, Marner is better and I don't think many would disagree, but the gap is smaller then people think. It doesn't matter though. Both are star wingers who offer different strengths.

yea, I really like Nylander, maybe moreso than Marner, but no denying who would fetch more in the trade market (leaving aside contract-related matters). It's Marner. And that says something -- consensus that Marner > Nylander.

I made the point that Nylander has yet to reach the output of Marner last year. You responded that last years number were inflated (for whatever reason unknown to me). I merely extended the window to 3 years of 82 game sample sizes which Nylander still hasnt achieved. The point is valid. You can duck around it all you want and be fooled into thinking that the gap between Marner and Nylander is small but it really isnt despite your attempt to use a 24 game sample size.

You should add last year's playoffs to Nylander's 24 game sample size.

Moving forward, I could see the gap between these two being 10-15 points in favor of Marner...but Nylander will probably be scoring 10-15 more goals, so that would further narrow the gap between the two.

Nylander with open space is just scary. What a combination of speed, skill, and strength. He'll most likely finish with at least 30 goals and 75 points +. In a world where Matthews Marner, and JT average out to over 11M each (whether you think they deserve it or not) value like Nylander is essential. Just looks so good this season and his playoff performance doesn't look like a fluke.

Scary part is Willie is scoring sniper goals instead of goals around the crease like he did two seasons ago when scored 31 goals. It is a matter of time before he figures out he can do both.
The way he is playing, he is becoming Mack 2.0.

I'll take Willy on my team any day of the week. He's that good. But, and I know there's too often a but attached, I still think he has more to offer. The guy's skills are so good. I like seeing Keefe put him on the PK, I hope it continues. When this kid is skating hard, there are few players I'd rather watch.

Thats the scary thing. He's already amazing but he can still be better. Willy needs to realize he can literally be a top 10 player in this league. His offensive package is that good.

It's not just his offensive package I see, it's his complete tool set that intrigues. As you suggest, he can be that good. I - as I think Keefe infers - think Willy can be one of the best, he showed it early when playing with the Swedes 2/3/4 years back, he just needs...ohhhhh he is so tempting. I try not to overly hype, but Styles could be...

watching the jets game become physical and players skating hard, the atmoshere was similar to a aypff game. Some players started to struggle and while it seemed Nylander may have been benched, when he was out there he was navigating through the chaos with ease. His head is ways up and he has fantastic wheels.

I sincerely hope this is sarcasm.

He’s been really strong on the puck lately and coming out on top of a lot more board battles lately.

Much respect for his desire to continually get better.
i think he needs to engage players a little more when he doesnt have the puck. often times i see him just watching the play instead of battling defensively(in their own zone). amazing player and hes getting better.
