Draft day.
Bedard, Fantilli, and Carlsson are the top 3 picks.
Mike Grier calls Montreal and tells them he is going to select Smith but Is willing to swap picks for the right offer.
What is Montreal willing to add to #5?
Willing, or what is it going to cost? It’s no secret who the Top 4 players are likely to be. Right now 4th overall is worth quite a bit. Whether you’re going from 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.
San Jose needs young assets. Whether prospects, young players or more draft picks. Unfortunately they don’t have a lot to move, that’s going to give them too many extra picks. They’re going to have to get creative. Whether that’s retaining AAV, taking cap dumps, etc. Or trading this pick.
They should absolutely, 100% trade this pick.
Get as much as they can, while still staying in the Top 11-12. Arizona and Detroit probably have the most draft capital to move. Would they? Who knows.
In this situation, it’s not crazy to demand Florida’s pick from Montreal. For argument sake, let’s say however, it’s Montreal’s 2nd and 3rd round pick, as well as a prospect like Norlinder. It will cost that much. At least.
Then they should move down again. Let’s go with Washington because they’re the team Michkov is connected to the most. It’s going to cost the Caps 2nd round pick this year, 1st Round pick next year and 2 nice prospects like Suzdalev and Iorio. At least.
They can do things like this to grab assets. Doesn’t have to be this example, but it’s absolutely possible.
They’d end up with another 1st, two 2nds, a 3rd and 3 pretty good prospects. Plus they’d still be able to draft a player like Dvorsky or Danielson.
Sounds like a lot but it really isn’t if they’re basically trading Smith, and then Michkov.
That’s how you turn a franchise around. A franchise who’s horrible in every aspect right now. They need to add as many young assets as possible. To do this and still end up with a great C prospect, who for all we know, ends up as good as Smith anyway? You have to do it. It’s not an exaggeration that they can get this type of a return.
Just think they’re doing themselves a disservice by not trading out, and trading down at least twice. If that means going to 7, and then 12, than that’s what they have to do. They could really turn one pick into a killing.
