Unfortunately, on a one year deal you can't extend till December-ish.

So Stamkos would need to play 3 months at risk of a longterm injury with no longterm security

I could see some incentive for Stamko's agent to leak it. If the general response is "Seriously? That low?" it puts the pressure on Yzerman.

8.5AAV? it depends. over 8 years, and probably front loaded, it may be just fine.

it's still around a 70 million USD contract in a very favorable state for taxation.

To me, it depends on how the draft goes.. Do the leafs go after him if they get Matthews? by the looks of it, stammer wants to play center only, can the leafs afford to give stammer 10m? (looks like its gonna be in and around that ball park).. personally I would still give it to him but with Dion still being on the books for 7m per and Rielly coming up for a contract, could be bridge or a long term conract.. The leafs could be hesitant to handing out a big contract, esp with just getting out of one with kessel

That's a really good question and I asked the same question of people who advocate signing him for whatever it costs because overpaying by a few million isn't an issue etc.

I'd honestly like to know what do these people expect from Stamkos. If 30-35 goals and 60-65 points enough or are they expecting something more? One poster said he expects Stamkos to be a perennial top 5 scorer again, is that what others expect as well?

I'd say Stamkos resigning with TB is probably around 95% done. Just a guess though.

Going to be a lot of upset people in these boards pretty soon. I'd say within a week or so. TB doesn't want this to drag on past the TDL for sure and into the playoffs. So I think their window to get him signed is within the week.

If it is true that talks are picking up, then maybe Stamkos and the Lightning realized they need each other more than they originally thought.

With Stamkos' declining production, maybe he takes an offer from Tampa that rewards his past service- with no guarantee other teams make such an offer. And with Drouin forcing his way out, maybe Tampa values Stamkos more than they did a week ago.

I think Stammer's agent will ask for at least 10.5 x 8 using Toews and Kane as comparables. He might even ask for 0.5-1 million more because the cap is higher now than it was when Toews and Kane signed their extension.

Tampa's problem right now is they have a ton of RFA's coming up over the next few years who will likely demand big raises, coupled with a handful of expensive veteran contracts in the way.

They could very well let Stamkos go, and divide up his current $7.5 million cap hit to alleviate those pressures and keep most of the band together, but I guess their big risk is whether a guy like Tyler Johnson is worth the long term investment they'd likely be demanding.
