Medical here over there yes but as a hockey player with the team and with their Medical coverage paying the shot it shouldn't affect a player but a visitor it would big time.

I have Friends that are Snowbirds and they just paid the exchange rate between here and the States and I think 1000 dollars US cost them above 1400 dollars Canadian but as it was explained to me the Cost of food, accommodation, gas and the general purchases, more than made up for the difference in exchange, mind you they didn't like it too much but they also had to get medical insurance and that they really didn't like that because it had gone up considerably but they aren't hockey players, with team paid medical insurance either.

They sent me an E-mail sunning themselves in their chairs around a pool with the Ocean in the back ground and it was only minus 28 here, as if that weren't enough of a perk.

Stamkos has a decision to make but there are many factors that will come into the picture.

Absolutely.
I think all this tax, exchange, etc is way down his list of how he'll choose his Team to play for.

Hockey players and any sports related players only have a small window to make big dollars and philanthropy isn't part of the plan when their contracts are involved, causes yes and most of those are tax deductable.

Their not dealing with small change, they are talking millions, give me those extra dollars and I too will be sitting around a pool getting a tan, with my friends.

All these articles are written by sports writers, so i'm finding it hard to believe it's that simple. It makes sense if Stamkos buys an off-the-shelf TurboTax product and does his own taxes, but there's entire departments in billion dollar companies who's sole job is to deal with this kind of thing. I need something written by a Forbes writer with extensive history in accounting!

Okay so this is really interesting to me. Quick googling:

One of the best ways to control when you receive income is by setting up a corporation. This option isn’t for everyone, but the red tape and legal fees can be worth it if you’re making $90,000 or more in after-tax self-employment earnings and you’re not spending it all. “A corporation allows you to control when you take personal income,” says McShane. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to lower and defer tax across the family.”

It doesn't sound like the income source is completely similar, but i've no doubt a good accountant will definitely have a player in Stamkos' salary range paying a lot less than 50%.

The truth is, that in the Stamkos case, he may get more here in endorsements but take out the Super Star factor and that doesn't apply for most other players and some players are reluctant to put their names up for some products and they don't want the atmosphere in Toronto...Media and Fans

It could be a reason a lot of players would rather play south of the border but we pay equalization monies to teams in the States and it's not equal, any wonder why there are no Canadian teams in the Playoffs, I would think agents and players know the financial reasons why.

My strategy did not rely on his or anyone's star power. My strategy was artificially offsetting his salary to cover the tax difference using one of your many companies as a sponsor. It was a direct bend the rules ploy by team ownership to supplement his salary to offset the difference.

This is only a factor, some people think it is straight forward, just switch teams and be happy but Stamkos has a lot to consider, I'm not a financial analyst and the posted propositions, are mostly beyond my depth, I am only quoting an article stating those facts and I believe they are accurate and until someone publishes a counter to it, that's the way it stands and I don't think they would publish it if it wasn't the case.

This should be on a financial site, not a hockey site but it is, in my opinion why Stamkos may stay in Tampa Bay and further what is wrong with the NHL system.

Stamkos is not coming here and will be re-signing with Tampa.

His agent likely came back with 10.5 and they will settle in the middle with 9.5.

Book it.

If you're so sure of this, perhaps you can explain why this hasn't been done by now. I thought he'd stay in TB as well but I thought the deal would be done in the summer. The more time that passes, the more likely he is not to stay there IMO.

I think he wants out like MSL and Drouin.
Something is wrong in Tampa.
Too much weirdness going on.

They made the cup finals last season and have a team that's full of good young players.

MSL wanted out because he got snubbed for the olympics.

How much more money can he make in endorsements though?

I would expect he already has several already...
3rd highest in the NHL last I saw behind Croaby and OV.

Bauer, BioSteel and I believe Sportschek are the big 3.

It'll get done.

He said, just today, that he wants to stay in Tampa for the second time in 2 weeks. He was offered 8.5, his agent thinks he can get more and will counter with a highball offer.

Its a process,

-He is the captain on a winning team.
-His parents just bought a house.....near Tampa, which is a poor mans Miami. The CSA is located in Miami not Tampa.
-He has said repeatedly that he wants to stay in Tampa.
-Just a matter of time before all this nonsense is put to rest and there will be a ton of upset Leaf fans....again.

guys with that kind of star power just don't bail on their team. He won't reach UFA status. He will get extended before the TDL.

I keep telling myself that as well, but you have to admit it's strange it's gone this long. Maybe Yzerman thinks he can do better with getting two $5M players, or maybe he's thinking about the contracts he'll have to offer Kucherov, Palat, Johnson not to mention Hedman. You never know.

Agreed. The article claims to be going on numbers provided by a "sports tax guru" and yet in the tax breakdown by city at the end of the article completely ignores the fact that as a Canadian citizen, Stamkos still pays Canadian tax even when he works in the States.

Southern Ontario still produces tons of elite talent. They basically all grown up as Leafs fans, and sooner or later one of them is going to come home. Might be Stamkos, might be someone else. But it's going to happen.

Maybe it will get done but I wouldn't be so sure.

He said he wants to stay - even if that's not true, he'd still say that so that's meaningless.

Why has he liked tweets that have him coming to Toronto? Why has he done this more than once?

Of course he'll say that he wants to stay. Till he leaves. Fans will bash him. It'll cause friction in the dressing room etc.

The report that his parents just bought a house or moved to Tampa or near Tampa are false. He said so multiple times.

"I think, speculate, there's so much information out there that's probably false. Like the ones about my parents moving to Tampa (which Stamkos said is not true). That just comes with the territory."

Hmm so much for that one. I dunno, it feels to me like he wants to come to Toronto. Has felt like that for some time actually. I just hope we don't overpay for him.

Many Canadians become American citizens, just to avoid that tax.

He wanted out way before the olympics. That was the last straw.

In regards to Stamkos and coming here. Its a toss up because the reality is it seems he is being forced to play the wing, and he prefers centre. The coach plays him 14 mins on some nights and it looks like their relationship is tenuous at best. Finally he gets lowballed and TB doesn't seem that interested in sighing him.

Not good If i'm in Stamkos's camp.

I would think that another factor is going to be how he's used in the playoffs, if Tampa should make it there. if it's like how he was used last year.... (shrug).
