Player Discussion Will Cuylle

Cuylle is the tits. He's exactly what I want out of this type of player.

He's physical, but he's not just running into everything like an idiot. He's aggressive in all three zones, but again, not just running around. He has a purpose. He pressures the puck, helps us get it back, and he doesn't go "what the f*** is this thing?" when he gets it like a lot of the "grit" types.

Quite the opposite, actually. He's extremely quick with the puck and has facilitated our transition considerably. His one weakness was passing accuracy and he clearly worked on it. He's not a bunder, but he plays fast.

Imagine a player who does everything right and gets better in the offseason. I feel like I'm watching a different franchise.

He's everything we needed.
quite the turnaround from august. if i'm not mistaken you had him squarely in the "sucks ass" category.

welcome aboard

He has also been the tits.

I never disliked him as a total package, it's just that he and his line never seem to score. They're scoring this year.
Kakko is a guy who unfortunately needs specific players to maximize his abilities.
The shit we had at center last year actually were the worst possible centers for him.
I also don’t think he was 100%. He had a knee issue and he was already slow.

Dude is exactly what we want for the playoffs.

very promising that he and KK are continuing to be productive in Chytil's absence
They had one really bad game, and one really good game. It does help that the really good game came against the much better team.

I've missed most of the games this season (due to the time difference - how has Cuylle been? Amazing stats so far.

Also what happened to Chytil?

While Chytil was solid and hopefully he returns and picks up where he left off, he and Cappo are maybe showing it doesn't matter who centers them, they can be an impactful line for this team with whomever centering them.

Fingers crossed.

Brodz can't defend.
Fil does the heavy lifting

What he’s done so far is incredible, thinking long-term I know it’s not the rangers MO to go long term out of an ELX usually but Cuylle is someone they might have to think about doing so.
He's a guy with very little downside (outside of injury risk, which applies to every long-term deal) on a longer deal. His style of game is rare, and impactful even if his numbers never really improve past the 40-50 point range. You'll probably need to overpay the first year or two versus what he would get on a bridge, but you'd see huge savings on the back half of the deal. $4.5M on a 6-8 year deal is probably about right.

he was very highly rated going into the OHL. 3rd overall draft pick in the OHL. numbers were solid but nothing special as a 16 and 17 year old in the OHL. surprised he lasted until 60th overall in the nhl draft when hes a big dude who can skate and has skill.

I get mostly the other teams' feeds and it's wild how their announcers are so high on Cuylle. One set of announcers called him a forgotten type of players in today's NHL, a true power forward and how that's a huge asset in the postseason.

Back in September, there was torrential rain that came out of nowhere one Saturday afternoon in the city. It actually was probably the last time it meaningfully rained in the city before today.

I was on a run on the west side highway when the rain came in, so while everyone was taking cover it was basically me trudging through hurricane conditions.

Out of nowhere, I run past Will Cuylle and a friend. They had been playing tennis on the water there and clearly got caught in the storm as well. They were already marveling at the fact that I was still running so they started cheering me on. When I got closer to them I yelled “25 for you this year” and fist bumped Cuylle. Was a very cool moment (he’s absolutely massive in person).

I’m glad he took my message to heart!

Low-key Brodz promo.

Love it.

Love looking back into draft guides from the past. In 2020, there was a lot of talk about the power forward types that were coming out having higher value. Jake Neighbors, Luke Tuch, Sam Colangelo got all sorts of hype. Cuylle was certainly mentioned but not in the same way alot of these other players were brought up.

Rangers staff gets crap all the time on this site for drafting and development. They seem to have gotten that draft right.

The pendulum tends to swing back and forth between big guys with physical tools and questionable skill, and smaller skilled players with questionable physical tools once you get past the first round. Glad we were able to snag him where we did.

If there's one thing I've noticed it's that machinehead changes his opinions based on the "what have you done for me lately" principal

Sounds like a scary dude - is his name Luca Brasci or something?
