Is there reason to believe Fiala is interested in signing an extension in Ottawa? Because Ottawa isn't in a position to be pursuing costly rentals.

If Batherson, Brady, Norris, Stutzle take the next step (as early as next season) and become 60-80 point players they will quickly challenge for a WC spot.
Add a veteran like Giroux to the mix and their odds improve. Also Sanderson, is he ready? Ottawa is a few moves away from becoming a dark horse in the East. The biggest question mark is in goal; if Forsberg can't handle starter duties; they could easily miss next season as well.

Why not trade this year's 1st (top 3 protected) + a piece for him. He's someone we need, let's finally pay for a good player.

It’s going to be hefty I think.

1st round pick (top 10 protected) + Ridly Greig + Jacob Bernard-Docker.

I’m rather high on Greig, it still might not be enough. Fiala is a great add. I don’t know how these futures are going to help Minny though.

Isn't Fiala a RFA after this year? Seems like a lot to give up, even if he agreed to a contract beforehand. I'd say go the offer sheet route.

Excuse me if I’m wrong, if we offer sheet him aren’t we just walking him straight to free agency?

As a MN fan, I think it is a foregone conclusion that Fiala is moved this offseason.

He’s going to go for the best future based package offered. A first, with minimal protections, will need to be involved. Prospect will also need to be involved and quality will depend on where that first is. The Wild can take a forward on with deal that is expiring but likely needs to be under 4mil.

Ottawa seems logical if they want to make a jump as their younger players gain traction. Fiala’s age would fit in. But I think there will also be several other teams looking at him as he can provide an explosive spark to an offense.

So your proposal is OTT 1st (top 10 protectedt) + OTT 2nd + 2nd + JBD for Fiala? Or did I misunderstand your post?

My proposal is 1st from another team in 2023 top 10 protected(which will be a contenders 1st round pick) + our 2nd + their second + Sokolov/Jarventie/JBD

Or if you can fit Connor Brown. Brown+2nd+JBD/Sokolov/Jarventie

Nah, this is nuts. For a guy who hasn't scored 30 goals or over 70 points yet?

Batherson is an 80 pt player. If it weren't for that idiot Dell he would be close this season.

This is factual, but pretty disingenuous when you have two league-wide artificially shortened seasons in the last three.

His value should be as a ~30 goal, ~70 point play driving winger because that's the caliber of player that he has been over the last 176 games.

Even if you want to drop it to ~25 goals, ~65 points then whatever, but that still should be '1st round pick+' territory.

Though I will say Ottawa's 2022 1st is probably a bit too high at the moment. #8 or lower sounds about right.

Brutal offer. Take off the homer glasses. Every team in the league beats that bottom offer

It's not brutal if you consider that Minnesota doesn't have much leverage. You also might want to do some research on Connor Brown, before dismissing the offer. I personally would rather keep Brown and sign Giroux.

You better go get that 1st, because this is not adequate. A 2nd and Ottawa's third tier prospects aren't gonna get it done.

The leverage is the other 30 teams in the league we can trade him to.

I'd do Brown + JBD + 2nd(2023*) w/ a condition to change it to a 1st if Ottawa makes Playoffs for a signed Fiala.
This is the best offer in the thread imo. I could see a second conditional pick being added - 2nd next year if they get our 2nd, 3rd next year if they get our 1st, something like that

I'd hope any trade for Fiala would be contingent on an extension

Minnesota wouldn't do this though. Connor is lesser player than fiala and will need a new contract also. Also the team isn't trying to get older, so connor and 2nd round pick doesn't get it done

I don't really like the fit nor am I convinced that the Wild can even afford Brown next year after a Middleton extension and the goaltending situation figured out. We've already got a 21(22 next year) year old RHD(Addison) trying to crack the line-up so I don't see what acquiring another(Bernard-Docker) does when Dumba is all but guaranteed to be staying if Fiala is moved and Spurgeon's contract isn't movable. Picks and forward prospects are a more logical return. Maybe Gustavsson as a 3rd piece given our ties to the Pittsburgh group that selected him. Understandable if the 2022 1st is off the table, which would leave Greig or Boucher as the primary pieces that would make the most sense.

Minnesota will try to compete next year, no? Brown is a good 1yr rental and could probably be flipped for a 1st or more if they don't want him.

I could see Ottawa or another team paying more, but Brown, JBD/equivalent prospect and 1st + 3rd/2nd +2nd isn't a horrible offer for a guy who would likely be a 1yr "self-rental" for Minnesota otherwise.

Brown+JBD+1st+3rd is fine. The contentious part is that you have some people who want to make it Brown+JBD+2nd, and that's not fine.
