Why is Kerfoot on this team?

Hes basically a .5 ppg 3C. Hes not the kind of guy that jumps out at you for any reason but I think our fans expect him to be John Tavares or something. Do people honestly think hes no better than some 4C making league min?!
He is of decent value.

He's a very good defensive player with solid 3rd line offense as well. His speed and positioning allows him to both cover defense well while also quickly transitioning the puck out of danger and to the attack.

Since the trade, at Even Strength:

Kadri: 13:26, 37pt pace, 46.2xgf% (-7.0rel)
Kerfoot: 13:09, 32pt pace, 51.7xgf% (+0.1rel)

Comments about Kadri from last night's Avalanche Board game thread:

"Kadri needs to get his head out of his *** soon."

"Kadri pisses me off and tbh hasnt been a good Avalanche player for most of his tenure here. He showed up for the playoffs last year so I'll give him credit for that, but I thought he was kinda shit during the season last year too."

"Kadri is rubbish"

"Out of these four (JTC, Saad, Donskoi, Kadri), two should come out and be replaced with LOC and Kaut. "

"Kadri is a bonehead,"

"Kadri + Saad look like 3rd liners"

"Kadri and Saad both have been donkey piss every single game."

"Kadri’s drop-off is really hurting this team. Even at his best he’s not really a shift-to-shift impact guy, but when his scoring touch is gone, he’s a liability."

"Boy do I wish Kadri was on any other team."

"Still a second round exit team with a bunch of losers like Kadri leading the way."

"He's one of the biggest idiotson this team for sure."

"Kadri really needs to wake up. Totally uninterested play. As a 2nd line centreman, it's unacceptable."

"He's got to go."

"I think it’s also time to take Kadri off that 1st PP unit. It seemed like he lost alot of faceoffs in the PP and other than that I find him quite useless there."

"What Kadri needs to do is leave Columbus off his no trade list so we can package him for Dubois."

"Kadri does not setup his teammates for success, he only really uses them when he has completely run himself out of options"

"He's one of the most selfish player in the NHL. Not sure all his linemates are OK with that."

"Hes completely useless as a bumper. I said it before but all he does is confuse the hell out of Nathan there. Nathan does that fake shot pass to Kadri and it almost always ends up in Kadri's feet. It worked a few times in the playoffs against the Yotes but all season it never worked. "

"Saad hardly touches the puck and Kadri just wants to fire off inaccurate shots."

"Kadri has zero ability to drive a line. He's as bad as Donskoi at winning puck battles, has below average playmaking skills (kerfoot is actually much better than him in that aspect) and is either lazy or has poor awareness defensively all while taking stupid Ian Cole-esque penalties. The only things he has going for him as a player is that he can shoot and stickhandle but even that is not there most nights. Honestly I'd rather have Jeff Carter playing 2c out there than Kadri, at least he wouldn't kill so many plays."

"I’m worried about our centers outside Mack. Is Kadri-Compher-Bellemare good enough to win the cup?"

"The second line is only going to work with a high level transition puck carrier on the wing. Kadri/Saad just don't skate well enough for Bednar's transition game."

Some of these comments are hilarious. I still miss Naz. He blead blue and white. Which is a rare thing to find these days. What perspective though eh? the guy that a lot of people on the leafs board ostracize KD for "giving away" is actually falling out of favor with the fanbase he plays for. I think Kerf will bounce back from last game. His intensity has been there in every game, I just think the decision making wasn't the greatest last game. But hard work usually prevails, which he has shown he can do. I am not worried

Would be great if we lost this guy in expansion. He's not good at anything and is way overpaid, 3.5M a year is ridiculous for this guy. Will be glad when he is gone from Toronto.

Id do it. I dont mind kerfoots value but Bogo is unlikely to be a full time dman and Kadri would give us a full time lift.
No room for Kadri now ... plus we need a heavier force at 3C ... and we need vet presence Bogo will bring all year on developing guys and in playoffs

Kerfoot kind of reminds me of the army of speedy, good fundamental puck carriers the Toronto Marlies churn out every year like a Johnsson, Timashov, Soshnikov, etc. I think he’s heads up, relatively decent jam and compete level and his calling card is really good straight away speed and nice puck handling ability but ultimately doesn’t have any kind of playmaking or finishing ability.

I don’t think he’s particularly integral to the team and his price tag is too high.

That said, I am also curious what he would look like on PP1. That unit is overloaded with skill and has a had a lot of problems with a clean and speedy break out up the ice. Matthews and Marner get too cute with the drop passes with little urgency, Nylander is smooth and good entering the zone but I don’t always like his pace. Rielly’s been chaotic with the puck the last two years . I think a straight forward puck carrier like Kerfoot could be an interesting look. Just have him carry the puck on a full gallop through the neutral zone, give it to someone else and then crash the net.

Would be downgrade at even strength and I wouldn't want naz on our top PP unit either.

Reminder that he's not even on PP2 so far, let alone PP1.

He has been a very nice add to our PK so far though.

He's been fine? His line is getting heavy defensive assignments - what exactly do you want?
It’s 50/50 exactly right now between ozone and dzone starts and he starts without the puck 53% of the time. He can get it back because he motors. He has to practice it lots and i have never since he’s been here heard or seen him working extra on faceoffs. Not sure thats the case but if it is thats not cool

Well he's either a #1 or #2 C right now, and due a nice raise this offseason.

He's # 3 behind Suzuki (1) and Kotkaniemi (2), he'd be a #3 here and at a much lower cap than Kerfoot and much better defensively.

Kotkaniemi is the distant #3 actually. Suzuki gets a tad more ice time than danault right now but the danault line still does the heavy lifting against the toughest matchups.

Even Strength

Suzuki: 13:14, 1pts, +0
Danault: 12:46, 3pts, +2
Kotkaniemi: 11:58, 3pts, +2

Matthews 19:29, 4pts, -1
Tavares 15:08, 2pts, +1
Kerfoot 11:50, 2pts, +0

I don’t think he deserves to be on any PP at all I’m just interested to see what his puck moving and skating could do for the breakout since PP1 seems relatively poor compared to the names on it. Simmonds shouldn’t be there either but he’s on the unit sometimes for specific skill sets.

Only thing I care about on the PP is stacking that top unit tbh. Lots of candidates to get the limited 2nd unit minutes and kerf is just one of them.

Just pointing out that he's not getting any PP time at all this year, which we should always note when looking at production.

48 seconds is not a distant 3rd, its one shift a game..

Danault is on Montreal's 3rd line, watch a game or two.

Translation: If I admit he's not worth his salary, I have to admit that Dubas completely blew the Kadri trade.

That trade was so weird, Trade for Barrie to be your PP QB a season after Rielly got 70+ points, trade away the best 3rd line center (who should be #2) in the league for what amounted to a rental and a black hole of a player. Odd trade. I get the Kadri had over stayed his welcome and had to go but Barrie and Kerfoot?

I'm surprised so many have forgotten as to why Kerfoot is here, so I'll post this just as a reminder...

"The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Tyson Barrie, forward Alexander Kerfoot and a 2020 sixth-round draft pick from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for centre Nazem Kadri, defenceman Calle Rosen and Toronto’s 2020 third-round pick.
Colorado is retaining 50 per cent of Barrie’s annual average salary of $5.5 million."
